Where To Donate Household Items To Charity
I know it can be difficult to get creative about where to donate household items to charity, and to figure out where they’ll be most appreciated.
That’s why I’m slowly going to be compiling a list of articles with suggested places to donate various types of items. Here is the article I’ve written so far:

Consider Selling And Then Donating The Money

Donating cash to your charity of choice helps you give money to those who you believe need it most. Using auction and classified websites such as eBay, holding a garage sale, or using a consignment shop are good options to sell your items. When you donate cash you know the exact amount to report to the IRS, as opposed to using the valuation .
If youre looking for the easiest ways to donate, check out our list of charities that pick up donations.

Downsizing And Donating: Where To Give Used Items
Spring is the season for cleaning, so how about doing some downsizing? There are many benefits to cleaning out your closet, such as facilitating future moves, revisiting old memories, and making space for new articles to meet current and evolving needs.
There is another great benefit to downsizing: the opportunity to give items that you no longer want to those in need. It can be hard to know where to start when you have lots of stuff to pass on, especially if you have not only used clothing but also furniture and other household items to give. We have some suggestions for you! Large outlets like the Salvation Army are widely known and receive lots of donations, but there are many worthwhile local charities that we have highlighted here for you as well. For your convenience, weve also noted the charities that pick up items for you, and suggested ones that benefit all members of your greater community, from fellow seniors to furry friends, struggling youth, and women in crisis.

What Is Home Dcor
Home décor is simply a term that describes various design elements for every home. It can relate to a theme the homeowner is trying to encapsulate or the feeling they want to engender. People mainly associate it with interior design. Décor pieces can find uses outside of homes as well. They can positively impact various spaces, including hotels and entertainment centers, and provide style and personality.
Home décor pieces add visually appealing and attractive elements to any room in a home. Using them effectively requires a person to consider the physical items and their materials. They must also think about their placement and the color of the room they sit inside. So can you donate home décor items to charity? The short answer is yes, but they cant be too worn. You must also clean them correctly before giving them to a charity or donation center of your choice.
Candles And Wax Melts
If theres one thing a home needs, its a pleasing aroma. When you walk through a door, the first thing you tend to notice is how the home smells. So candles and wax melts make fabulous donations at your local charity. They come in many scents and wax blends that suit every home. Not to mention, they can look lovely on a shelf or kitchen counter.

Are There Any Household Items That You Cant Donate
There are some household items you cant donate. Most donation centers only accept new or gently-used items. This means if anything is no longer functional or sanitary, its not eligible for donation. Things like carpets, mattresses, or used personal care items are not accepted because they pose a sanitation risk.
Each organization has its own rules and requirements. Its best to check with the specific nonprofit when planning your donation. The last thing you want to hear is no when youre bringing in a large donation.
What Can You Donate

We accept new and gently used appliances, furniture, building materials, household goods and more from individuals and companies. Our ReStores are unique and we only accept what we can sell. There are certain items that we cannot accept due to state and local health regulations. Please refer to the graphic on the right for information on what we can and cannot accept.
We only accept what we can sell! We do not repair broken items, so please do not donate items that are broken or do not work!

What Can You Do With Things You Cant Donate
Sometimes, there are things you cant donate. Either these things are too used, no longer functional, or are simply too outdated. When it comes to these things, you have a few different options:
- Gift:If theres someone in your life who might appreciate this item, ask them. Sometimes things are too personal to donate, but they make great gifts.
- Recycle:There are many recycling nonprofits and programs that help everyday people recycle things in an eco-friendly way. For instance, old clothes can be donated into fabric scraps, turning them into new fashion.
- Trash:Ultimately, some things will need to be thrown away. Learn to recognize when there is no more value to be found in a specific item. Its okay to throw things away when the time comes.
The Habitat For Humanity Restore Is A Home Dcor And Building Supply Store That Sells New And Gently
The ReStore is mainly volunteer-run, and a social enterprise whose intent is to fund 100% of the cost of the Society while also contributing to the building of home for hardworking families. This means that all donations to our build program are targeted for construction, and not overhead of the Society.
Because our ReStores operate on donations, inventory is ever-changing and never guaranteed. We may have the perfect lamp you’ve been looking for or a couch that would fit perfectly in your living room but you’ll never know if you don’t come in as these treasures don’t stay in the store long.
Our inventory is kindly donated by local corporate donors and individuals like you.

Where Can I Donate Vehicles
If you dont stand to get much by trading in your old vehicle, you can donate it to charity instead. Youll still benefit financially from the tax write-off if you itemize on your taxes. And it has the potential to do a whole lot of good for a cause you care about.
Cars are highly valuable donations for charitable organizations because they sell at auction for several hundred to thousands of dollars, according to vehicle paint meter manufacturer FenderSplendor.
That even includes cars that arent in running condition, which can be recycled for their scrap metal and parts, potentially bringing in a few hundred dollars, according to New York-based salvage company Cash Auto Salvage.
And while many general charities accept donations of cars, going with one that specializes in vehicle donation can come with perks. These include helping you sort out any title issues, directing your donation to specific causes, and even the potential to donate a vehicle that doesnt run.
Before you donate your car, make sure its clean. And do a thorough search for any receipts or papers with identifying personal information.

Where You Can Drop Off Household Items
The most common way to donate your household items is through a drop-off donation. This is when you visit a donation center in-person, transporting your household items yourself. There are a lot of great, well-known donation centers that allow drop-off items, but youll want to be aware of what they take before you make the trip yourself.
Make Sure The Organization Accepts The Items Youre Donating

Each nonprofit that takes used furniture donations may have different requirements for what they do and dont accept. A torn, soiled, stained, or otherwise damaged item will not be accepted in most cases. GoGreenDrop has made a donation guideline that is general enough to be used for other companies, but we recommend contacting the organization that is taking your furniture for free so that they may confirm your items qualifications.

Where Can I Donate Furniture & Heavy Loads
While most organizations that accept general household goods also take furniture, there are compelling reasons to donate directly to a furniture-specific charity.
For example, when you donate to a furniture bank, it gives your used furniture directly to people who need it. Also, organizations that specialize in furniture donations typically offer pickup services.
Only donate furniture if its clean and in good condition. Some light wear and tear are OK. But the furniture must be free of broken parts, and upholstery must be free of tears and stains.
Additionally, furniture must be free of anything that could injure someone, such as having nails, screws, or springs poking out.
8. Furniture Bank Network
The Furniture Bank Network operates in 34 states, giving all accepted furniture directly to those in need. That often includes formerly homeless individuals working to get back on their feet financially.
It also includes the working poor, people escaping domestic violence, unemployed individuals, and immigrants. When necessary, Furniture Bank Network also helps those whove survived fire, robbery, or natural disasters.
The network is actually a directory of furniture banks a way for donors to find local organizations where they can donate their used furniture for reuse in their communities.
Furniture Bank Network accepts:
- Housewares
- Cars
These banks also offer free pickup and towing for donated cars and recreational vehicles.
