David Burke, the Hazlet native who seemingly blurs the lines between chef, artist, entrepreneur and inventor, has 18 restaurants worldwide.
But he may only be getting started on what he can do.
His latest effort, the GOAT , is Burkes seventh in New Jersey and unlike any other.
Located at the site of the former Italian American bistro Pieros, the GOAT is a restaurant he designed with a spirited goat-themed décor featuring original artwork and a fun, laidback vibe with superior food and service in a casual atmosphere.
But, heres the catch: Its seemingly in the middle of nowhere.
The GOAT may have a Union Beach address, but it sits on a property site along Route 36 in an area that doesnt seem to have a draw to it and certainly nothing resembling a business district.
Burke sees it differently.
Yeah, it is a little different ZIP code and there are no businesses on the highway but we dont feed businesses, we feed homeowners, he said. This is a family restaurant. It is a neighborhood restaurant. It is 25-30% above a chain restaurant from an economic standpoint, and 80% above what a chain delivers.
And it does it, Burke said, in an area that needs it.
Rumson is in a great ZIP code, but it isnt very easy to get to from Matawan, Holmdel or Colts Neck and up this way. It is a lot easier to get to Union Beach from the Middletown, Red Bank, Holmdel and surrounding areas.

FINAL UPDATE:I’m happy to report the second payment of $190 to Designer Rugs, the sister company to Burke Decor, was credited to my Paypal account. I’m very thankful to the nice agent who I spoke with from Burke’s Decor who helped me get the refund finalized. Hopefully this company will remove items they no longer carry to keep people from paying for something that doesn’t exist. I’m adding a star to the rating because I did get my money back, but they still have issues to work through.UPDATE:After two phone calls to Burke Decor, I received my Paypal refund for the first $190 purchase that they cancelled. NOW, I just need the other $190 refund from their sister company, Designer Rugs. PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS!! If I could give zero stars, I would. Paid for a product and a few weeks later was offered replacement items because the item was “retired.” I called and asked for $190 refund through Paypal, but we will see if that happens.
