There are millions of items that qualify as around the house decor, especially at Christmas. From wall art to advent calendars, its hard to determine when to put everything out.
Wall art and festive pillows can come out when you start decorating the rest of the house. Typically, this will be the weekend after Thanksgiving. If you have advent calendars, these should come out on December 1st. If you display Christmas cards, you can put a holder or a Christmas card display by the door after Thanksgiving. As you receive cards, you can add them to these decorations. You can also use them to display older cards from friends and family.
For the rest of your decorations its mostly your own choice when you put them up. Traditionally, people wait until Thanksgiving is over before putting up Christmas. Remember to have fun with decorations and use it as a time to bond with those around you.
Hide Gaps With Sprigs Or Foliage
If you’ve opted for a real tree, chances are even after you’ve covered it in lights and baubles there are going to be some gaps. But rather than gingerly spin the tree around in the hope to find a better angle, fill in the gaps with extra foliage like flowers or sprigs of evergreen.
‘Adding blooms to a Christmas tree is a really great way to make your tree look fuller.’ says Tracy Cole, interior designer and founder of Hello Flora. ‘Fill in those gaps between twinkly lights and baubles with real, dried or artificial flowers. I like to pick a color palette for the whole tree and then work out what stems I need to really add the WOW factor.’
‘The best flowers to use in a Christmas tree are those with big blousy heads, something like hydrangeas. But really any botanical with a bright pop of color will work. Ive used red rosehips from my garden before, anything that adds contrast and texture to the green of the tree.’
‘Dried or artificial flowers will give you the longest-lasting display. However fresh flowers can really elevate your tree. If you do use fresh flowers you can extend their life by trimming the stems short and at an angle, and then slip the ends into reusable floral water tubes to keep them hydrated.’

One option is to fix something like a Command hook on the front of your door. These easily removable hooks are made in a variety of sizes, with some catering specifically for Christmas wreaths. If you dont want to have to buy a new hook each year, heres what I did: fix a hook inside your door. Turn it upside down and put a long string on your wreath. You should be able to put the string over the top of the door and fix it to the hook, allowing the decoration to stay in place on your door. When Christmas is over, turn the hook the right way up – its great to hang a hat from so you dont forget it on your way out the door.

When Should I Take My Christmas Tree Down
While some people might be keen to take the Christmas tree down once the big day celebrations are over, others like to hang on to that festive cheer for as long as possible.
In Christianity, the traditional date to take your Christmas tree down is twelve days after Christmas.
This is because celebrations last for 12 days from the birth of Jesus, so the Twelfth Night – or the twelfth day after Christmas – officially marks the end of the festive season.
This year, the Twelfth Night falls on Thursday 6 January.

If you were one of those families who had their tree decorated and the Christmas village out and in full swing by Nov. 1, you might be in luck. According to experts, early may make you happier, so you might want to consider pulling your garlands and gigantic Santa statues down from the attic a bit sooner.
“In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy, and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood,” psychoanalyst Steve McKeown told Unilad. ” to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!” That seems logical enough!
Psychotherapist Amy Molin agreed, explaining that Christmas decorations can take you back to a simpler time, at least mentally. “Nostalgia helps link people to their personal past, and it helps people understand their identity. For many, putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for them to reconnect with their childhoods.” She also says that it can help those who have lost someone feel closer to the loved one in question, adding that “decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual.”
Sounds like it’s time to break out the decorations, queue up the Christmas playlist, and deck those halls.

Putting up the tree and adorning your living space with lights and garlands may trigger nostalgia, reminding you of warm holiday memories from your childhood. For people who are unable to physically celebrate with their loved ones this year, thinking back to positive experiences from the past may bring comfort. Decorating early means youll get to soak up these good vibes for a few extra weeks.
As a psychologist, I often talk about the connection between our thoughts, emotions and behaviors, said Los Angeles psychologist Erlanger Turner, an assistant professor of psychology at Pepperdine University. Given the stress of the pandemic, thinking about positive images is one way to help prevent stress or anxiety. Decorating your home may serve as a cue of positive memories and emotions, which can be really helpful to promote joy and prevent sadness.
Smell is also strongly tied to memory, so consider lighting a scented candle that reminds you of sitting by your grandparents fireplace or getting a real tree, instead of an artificial one, for that piney fragrance.
If someone has a holiday smell that sparks positive emotions or memories, having that smell around has a potential to lift your mood, said Atlanta psychologist Rebecca Leslie of Living Fully Psychological Services.

Start With The Lights
Unless you are using a pre-lit tree, the next step is to string on the lights. When it comes to fairy lights, more is more, you want the tree to twinkle from all angles and you want enough lights to really get into the depth of the tree too. ‘We’d recommend 170 lights per meter of the tree.’ advises Chrissie Rucker, founder of The White Company. ‘Start from the bottom, winding them up and around.’
Once you’ve tackled the inevitable untangling, switch your lights on before you start putting them on the tree, this will make it much easier to see gaps. Work your way across the tree, going up one branch each time you’ve made a full circle. Once you have this even spread you can start playing around take some lights further back towards the trunk, drape the string over smaller branches and fill in any obvious gaps.
You can layer fairy lights too. If you like colored lights start with a base of white lights that sit closer to the trunk and them wrap the colored lights around keeping them towards the edges of the branches. And different sizes of lights can give a lovely look too, mixing smaller fairy lights with slightly larger globe lights creates a really twinkly tree that has an almost lit from within look.

Believe it or not white can be a very hard color to decorate with! It can look flat and stark and lifeless!

Dont use one hue of white when you decorate. Choose several whites. Think of all the different shades and tones of white! Off white and warm white and cream and crisp white. There are so many white colors to choose from!
This is a very important tip when decorating with white. We want our white Christmas to look rich and snowy and have depth!
I like to use whites that are warmer rather than cooler. Too many cool white will not look cozy!

When Should I Put Up My Christmas Tree
Traditionally, Christmas trees should be put up and decorated at the start of Advent, which is the season in which Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, known as Advent Sunday, and always ends on Christmas Eve .
This means that this year, Advent falls on Sunday 28 November and is the earliest date that tradition dictates you should be putting your tree up.
However, the British Christmas Tree Growers Association recommends buying your tree at the beginning of December if you want it to last throughout the festive season.
The association says trees can last up to four weeks if they are looked after properly, so if you buy it in November, you do run the risk of the pine needles dropping and your tree branches drooping by the time Christmas Day rolls around.
To be on the safe side, putting your tree up a little later, such as the first week of December, will help to keep it looking healthier for a bit longer.
For those who arent as eager to get the Christmas decorations up that early, there is another tradition in which people decorate their trees 12 days before the big day.
Although in the past, decorations and trees were left as late as Christmas Eve to put up as any time earlier than this was thought to be unlucky.
In Roman Catholic tradition, the Christmas tree is not put up until the afternoon on 24 December.

No matter the weather outside, you can have a White Christmas inside by adding white holiday decor to your home!
