How To Choose A Home Decor Style That You Will Love

A popular question that first time home decorators have is What is a design or home decor style and how do I choose the right one for my home?

To answer the first half of that question, a home decor style is simply the stylistic choices that a decorator makes for a space. Over the years, certain choices have become strongly associated with each other and that collection of related stylistic choices becomes known as a specific design style.

Just like hairstyles and shoes, design styles go in and out of fashion. What was trendy and innovative in the 80s may not be fashion forward today. Also like fashion, some styles stand the test of time and remain popular well after their debut.

Southwestern Interior Design Style

Southwestern style home design by online interior designer, Christine M.

The southwestern style as we know it today is not the same as it was when it first became noticeable in the design world. And it will continue evolving as the years pass by. Southwestern interiors gather their inspiration from the soft lines of adobe houses, Spanish textiles, ironwork and nature. Color pallets have various colors found in the American desert. Rust, terracotta, and cactus green, are a few favorites amongst designers. Whereas furniture is more on the heavy side, often adorning thick legs and bulky finishes. Additionally, texture is southwestern interior designs best friend. Leather and suede are the most common upholstery material.

So I came up with Transitional Deco Glam.

The chandeliers, Chesterfield sofas, and architectural details that I love are traditional but usually with a modern twist that make them more transitional.

The black lacquered furniture, metals, textured fabrics and geometric patterns are all Art Deco.
