Add A Boho Feel To Your Outdoor Table With Pampas Grass
When it comes to growing ornamental grasses in the garden, the Seventies classic pampas is back in fashion in a big way. This also means it’s a good look for outdoor table decorating ideas. Like so much else, the trend for vases of big fluffy pampas grass is about taking an interior trend outside, as the look that first took over our homes last year moves into the garden.
‘As last years obsession with pampas grass continues, its safe to say that the boho vibe is here to stay,’ says Jess Martin, decoration expert at Ginger Ray . She suggests arranging bleached pampas grass in plain vases, arranging one centerpiece that’s slightly more dramatic. Black vases are always a good choice when paired with pampas grass for added drama.
Learn how to grow pampas grass so you’ll have plenty of feathery plumes of your own to fill vases with.

How To Set Outdoor Tablescapes
Creating a summer table has a few key elements that you need to figure out while decorating. And sometimes your choices flow easily and other times changes are in order.
For this project, I thought I had my table all figured out. You see, my original table design was a blue and white gingham table cloth that morphed into an all-white table. The white table was a bit drab and unexciting so I quickly added some bright colors with accents.
I did panic a bit when things were coming together, but I kept pushing on and finally found the summery look I was after.
But throughout the process I made sure to select these things for my table:
- Table Cloth
- Candles
Choosing a Table Cloth
For this table, I went with the standard white table cloth. I wanted the fabric to compliment the pretty colorful flowers and the white doesnt upstage decor but rather supports its surroundings. I did try the blue and white gingham fabric but it did overpower the items I set on the table.
Placemats
I found these adorable woven placemats and fell in love with them at first sight. Their whimsy design of what echoed flowers was exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, it appears that Domain Home who made these placemats went out of business. So, Im linking to some alternative placemats.
Floral Arrangements
On a side note, I always make a point to add flowers with a beautiful fragrance. So, I added some Stargazer Lilies and some Gardenias from my garden.
Introduce A Botanical Theme With Bud Vases
Bud vases for arranging individual stems idea by Ginger Ray
When entertaining in the garden if you want to choose a botanical theme for your garden decor ideas, make the most of the foliage that’s on offer. A little goes a long way and a few stems will look great arranged in bud vases.
‘Look for leafy foliage you can gather in your garden or nearby, then arrange in small glass vases to dot around the table,’ suggests Jess Martin, decoration expert at Ginger Ray .
‘Bud vases are a great option,’ agrees Lucy Whiddett of The Table Stylist . ‘They look stunning arranged along the center of a table to create a meadow look. Almost any flower works in a bud vase. Some of my favorites are tulips, roses, snap dragons and anemones. I suggest looking around the garden and using what you have to hand. I often add mint to my arrangements too in summer for a beautiful scent.’

Outdoor Summer Table Setting Tips
- Flowers First head to your local grocery store or order on-line if you cant find what you want or live remotely. My flowers were provided by Petal Driven. Alternately you can use faux and there are some excellent choices these days! Youll find some of my favorite fauxs in THIS POST.
- Accent Advice Now that you have your flowers you will have to decide on an accent color for your outdoor table centerpieces. I prefer a grouping that goes down the middle of the table and keep it low for conversation to flow freely.
- Carry On Take the color of your flower arrangements and/or summer flower containers into the place settings. I chose blue, which is always a safe bet for summer and you can mix all shades without it looking strange.
The blue flower pots are from several sources that Ive collaborated with in the pastHomeGoods, At Home Stores and Kirklands. I will add some similar shopping sources at the bottom of this post, so scroll for those! The blue bowls were handthrown by yours truly and I use my own pottery on a daily basis in our home. Read more about that HERE and shop for similar items below.
While normally Im not a huge proponent of paper or plastic, for outdoor living it can be mixed and matched to avoid breakage. The napkins are paper and the flatware and stemware are acrylic. Would you ever know that those wine glasses in this easy outdoor summer tablescape are plastic?! Definitely prevents issues, especially when the party starts to extend to the pool area.

While plants, chairs, and doormats are essential to cultivating a fresh summer porch, its always in good taste to add your own touch by hanging your family initials there too. This would be a simple DIY project as you could paint it any color of your choice and decide to distress it or not. Adding a single letter to highlight your familys surname is a super speedy way to update your porch on a warm summer night.
Styling Our Summer Outdoor Table Decor
Now everything was ready to set our summer table decor ~ or so I thought.
Remember, I was going to cover the table with white tablecloths first? I quickly realized that wasnt a good option. Flowing tablecloths around our feet would be too heavy for our current heat wave.
Then, as I was about to set the placemats on the table, I realized I had a problem. We currently have the table up against our fence, meaning we have two chairs on one side.
That arrangement wouldnt work for this tablescape. The placemats are large and I needed one on each side of the table.
I cant move the table with the umbrella in it. Another reason to wait until Sweet Shark got home from work later in the day.
We took the umbrella out of the hole in the table and placed it against the fence. Then we pulled the table away from the fence, allowing room for a chair to fit on that side of the table.
From now on, well leave the table and chairs like this. We can move the chairs and push the table closer to the fence when we arent using it for dining. It also gives us more room without the umbrella in the hole on the table.
Now I was ready to proceed with setting the summer table.
FYI: Normally, I place the centerpieces on the table first, but I wanted to wait until the last minute to add the flowers.
First came the placemats.
Then came the chargers and the floral plates. Guess who found a stick to play with?
Then came the silverware and the napkins. Guess which one I chose?

Use Color Carefully For Your Table Place Settings

Design by tablescaping expert Lucy Whiddett of The Table Stylist
‘When picking a theme and color for your table I suggest choosing three colors that fall into the primary, secondary and accent groupings,’ says tablescaping expert Lucy Whiddett of The Table Stylist . ‘This Amalfi tablescape has blue placemats as the primary color, crisp white napkins as the secondary color and the accent color yellow introduced by using fresh lemons.’
Foliage is an easy way to add drama to your tablescape too. Look for large branches with leaves to put into a vase to create a wild and fluid arrangement or try placing some simple foliage along the center of the table for a beautiful natural look.

Summer Garden Party Decor Ideas Bright Colors For Festive Mood
In addition to choosing a thematic or exclusively summer menu, it will be necessary to somehow decorate the place intended for the party so that its atmosphere turns out to be truly unforgettable and colorful. We will help you decide on the style of the decor by providing some simple, but bright and impressive summer garden party decor ideas.
What could be better than a decoration in bright colors to contrast with the greenery of the garden? The decor of your garden for a party is very important. Why? Because it will set the mood and invite everyone to the party.
Bright colors are great, they make the garden look vibrant and lively, but pay attention to your theme and your event! Multi-colored garlands made of paper or ribbons look festive and very summer-like. You can use them to decorate the space above the table, the backs of the chairs, trees, as well as to highlight a candy bar or buffet table.
If you want a more elegant and chic atmosphere, do not be too colorful. Choose light colors such as white or beige, which you will break up with a few touches of pastel. Gray is exceptionally trendy color and you can mix it with white, mint green and peach. These color combinations also work well for a family party or a garden wedding. Natural colors will highlight the warm atmosphere that we want for a party in the garden.
