An elegant sideboard is the perfect spot to serve drinks from, plus its perfect for tucking away all manner of paraphernalia. Be sure to have a lamp or candles to create a pool of diffused light.
If youve chosen vibrant colours like this aquamarine armchair or a purple rug, add coloured glass or ornaments to echo the tones and create a harmonious finish.
Add Some Lights To Your Window

Christmas is the perfect time to layer the lighting in your living room. Once you have your main statement ceiling light and fairy lights wrapped around your tree illuminate your space even more with some Christmas window lighting.
Now, these don’t have to be frighteningly flashy and disco. On the contrary, you’ll ideally want something warm and diffused for a cozy and comforting aesthetic.

Go Traditional With A Maximalist Twist
‘There is something oh-so-comforting about a classic red and green color palette and traditional Christmas styling,’ says Wayfair’s Nadia McCowan Hill. And when better to indulge in maximalism in interior design than at Christmas?
‘For a modern take on a vintage favourite, try mixing in contrasting prints such as polka dots, stripes, animal print, florals or gingham. It pays to not have too many tones at play when combining different patterns, so limit yourself to a palette of three or four tones.
Nadia adds: ‘A hint of glimmering gold offers the perfect contrast to all things crimson and emerald.’
Mindthegap is known for its maximalist aesthetic, and its Founder and Creative Director Stefan Ormenisan says: ‘Christmas is a time to really embrace this warm, inviting and joyful trend. We opt for jubilantly dressed Christmas trees, bold and eclectic patterns, embroidered textiles and layered styling from fringed table lamps to fabric, tassel trimmed pendant lights, richly adorned cushions, statement furniture and exuberant wallpapers, each working together to bring warmth, joy and a welcoming setting for entertaining and celebrating.
‘For those who prefer a more pared back mood, consider adding an abundance of cushions, a rich patterned lampshade and a beautifully decorated tree, which will provide a burst of maximalist style thats easy to change after the festive season.’

Transform Your Living Room With The Magical Touch Of Christmas
The quintessential Christmas show stopper is, of course, the tree! Standing tall, topped off with a sparkling golden star or delicate-winged angel, the tree embodies the Christmas spirit. We say, dont break with tradition, but go all out and adorn it with quirky and unique Xmas decorations this year. Ornaments boasting family pictures, handmade felt hanging decorations and hand-painted wooden and glass baubles will elevate your tree and give it real character.
Minimalism Is Fun: If your living room is small and cannot accommodate a towering Christmas tree, worry not. You can always opt for a tabletop tree or a tree in a jar. Minimalistic and fun! While wrapping gifts to stack under the tree go with a colour theme you can choose from classic Christmas tones or opt for something different to up the kitsch factor!
A Pop Of Colour: Swap out the usual couch cushions with ones in festive hues and add a plaid throw or rug in too for a pop of colour. You can simply tie large bows or sprigs of fresh pine on already existing decor like picture frames, mirrors and bookshelves to completely up Xmas vibes. Add Christmas figurines to glass cabinets and shelves and drape strings of fairy lights across window sills and display units. Casually placed candles, pine cones and citrus fruits will add to the warmth of the family room too.

How Can I Make My House Look Christmassy
‘Think beyond the tree,’ says Eason.
‘Why should the tree get all the festive fun? String up a selection of Christmas baubles and foliage, alternating between the two, to create a stylish hanging wall decoration.’
‘Turn a mantelpiece, cupboard top, or shelf into a festive focal point. Bring the outside in with a vase full of seasonal greenery and red berries. Line up adorable felt robins, nutcracker soldiers, and snow-covered miniature Christmas trees to tap into childhood nostalgia, then add light-up decorations for a warm and cozy glow.’
Introduce Icy Silvers And Whites For A Scandi Feel
If a red and green Christmas setup isn’t for you, look to the Nordics for a Scandinavian Christmas decorating scheme. Your house is bound to look cool in more ways than one.
‘A snow-dusted tree is a perfect backdrop for white, silver, and clear baubles and Narnia-esque snowflakes, hanging icicles, and silver stags.’ says Elle Spicer, international editor, M& S.
‘Add some more unusual ornaments, such as a vintage car topped with a tiny tree or a regal swan complete with a silver crown. Personalize with applique letters, for each family member. Finish with a contemporary star and a faux fur tree skirt.’
‘Top tip: Not only does a tree skirt hide the legs of an artificial tree or the trunk of a real one, but it can also be part of the theme like this faux fur tree skirt that fits with the overall winter wonderland look.’

Where Do You Put Christmas Tree In A Living Room

Before you even buy your Christmas tree, decide on where it will live over the festivities. Finding the perfect tree and realising it’s too big for that corner, or not large enough so that it gets lost is less than ideal.
You’ll want your tree somewhere where is still feels center stage, but not distractingly so as you still need to live and move around it. Try not to block televisions, sofas or windows which you need for natural light. Stay away from fireplaces and main walkway routes. Consider if there’s any furniture you can move out of the room for the holidays – if you don’t need that side table or extra chair, take it out and give the tree more room to breathe.

Mix Old With New For A Modern Traditional Look
As lovely as heirlooms and hand-me-down Christmas decor are, interior styles move fast and things go out of fashion quite quickly. But, with care and due diligence, you can create a traditional Christmas decorating scheme that keeps granny and the kids happy for including their handmade items, while still looking chic.
Take this living room for example by M& S. While a classic fireplace still retains its charm with original Art-Deco tiles, the brass-colored metal, and glass coffee table, inspired by the same era, is a main street purchase that you can pick up from the store.
‘Give a timeless red Christmas tree theme a touch of luxe with a generous sprinkling of gold,’ says Miranda Eason, senior content editor, M& S.
‘Start with a set of shatterproof balls in jewel-like red tones, then add nostalgic red Nutcracker figures, traditional Father Christmas ornaments, opulent red birds, and future-heirloom gold and red floral ornaments. Tie it together with a studded red velvet bow topper for an unexpected twist.’
‘Bid Yuletide guests a very warm welcome with opulent Christmas fireplace decorations, featuring seasonal foliage, perfectly placed stockings, and an array of glowing candles.’
Bring Bold Details To Your Ho
Is it even Christmas without buffalo plaid accents? People who love a traditional Christmas look will adore decor details like buffalo plaid and red and green.
For those that prefer a contemporary take on Christmas decor, add your favorite bright colors to your holiday color palette. With vivid colors, youll feel all the glitz and glamour of the season as you trim the tree.
And of course, dont forget the blankets! Blankets are the perfect finishing touch to your decor, as they provide both warmth and visual appeal. Buffalo plaid cotton, chunky knit, and velvet throw blankets are a great way to add a pop of Christmas color without any extra effort. Instead of a traditional tree skirt, texturize your tree with an oversized knit blanket. Give yourself full creative license to design the living room of your Christmas dreams.
Love and joy fill the room when were gathered with family, and beautiful living room decor emphasizes that warm spirit within. Prep your home this season to celebrate all the magic of home and create everlasting memories with those you love.

Be Creative With Your Vision Of A Christmas Tree
If you have a snug space with no room for a full-on fir Christmas tree, don’t be disheartened. There are loads of workarounds to make your Christmas living room decorating look just as whimsical.
Perfect as an apartment Christmas decor idea, we love this idea by Lights4Fun which uses book pages to create an alternative Christmas tree, finished with their Osby Star light fixture, available at Amazon.
We’d go all-out with this paper design using literary classics such as ‘A Christmas Carol’ or… go literal with the carol idea with some Carol music sheets, styled with your best bluetooth speaker belting out those Christmas classics from Mariah and Bublé.

Make the most of a rustic living room by bringing the outside in with branches of fragrant evergreen and pine cones. When choosing where to position your decorations think about where the focus of the living room will be the tree, fireplace or coffee table and plan around it. Here the coffee table is the focus of the room, laden with foliage, baubles and a pillar candle.
Why not add a bowl of homemade potpourri? Tie bundles of cinnamon sticks and pop them in a bowl with pine cones and a sprinkling of cloves for a festive pot pourri, Tara King, Style Content Editor at Country Homes and Interiors recommends.
Emma Parry, Head of Seasonal Buying at Tesco adds, Garlands and rattan decorations are easy and affordable ways to introduce this trend into the home, as both utilise natural materials and textures.
In terms of colour scheme, classic Christmas hues layered together are central to this theme forest green and berry red evoke scenes of evergreen woodlands synonymous with this time of year.
Sight: Bring In Cozy Lighting

My favorite thing about Christmas decor is always the lights! Tree lights, string lights, tea lights, candles I love them all!
To make your lighting cozier, use wall scones, layer twinkle lights throughout the room, or add candles to add a softer light. I always look for warm white instead of cool white lights for a prettier glow that isnt so harsh.
If you have a fireplace, light it up for extra warmth and glow.
