How Do I Know My Decorating Style
Your decorating style is something that will come in time, but it’s also something that will evolve as you enter different stages of your life, advises Emma Deterding.
As a singleton, for example, you may want a more design-led interior, whilst when you have children, there are many more practicalities that will need to be met to ensure your home functions fully for everyone using it.
For me personally, my decorating style is all about using color and pattern whilst blending antiques with new pieces. It’s something that has emerged over the years as I am exposed to more events and grow in experience and age. It has evolved as time has gone on.
Ultimately, your decorating style should be a reflection of your personality, and your home should be filled with things that you love, adore and make you feel safe, comfortable and at home.
According to Colin Wong, Creative Director at Development Direct: You should go with colors that you are strongly drawn to and have been for as long as you can remember. Everyone has a colour that they relate to and this should form the basis of your choice. The space is your own and you should finish it in a way that enhances your mood
Add Big Statement Furniture Pieces
This is a common mistake most homeowners make too many small, spindly pieces in one room. A room with leggy chairs, leggy tables and lots of small knick knacks only serve to clutter the room and confuse the eye.
Instead, try for a room that is well mixed. Have a large sofa, some skirted club chairs and then one or two slender arm chairs with attractive carved legs . This is just one example, but it gives you the idea of mixing furniture styles and sizes so that the room looks balanced not too bulky and not too spindly.
Even if you are , there are plenty of decorating ideas to try. Most designers will recommend that even the smallest of rooms have one large statement piece, such as a large armoire or cabinet. A mixture of big and little is key to a successful home interior design. This rule goes with accessories, too.

French Country Interior Design Style
Design by online interior designer, Kelli E.
Similar to many other interior design styles, French country interior design is a sophisticated blend of a few different style favorites. Shabby chic, farmhouse, and traditional all play a role in this design style. It starts with timeless antique furniture pieces. For example, a Louis VI chair updated with a modern print. Likewise, juxtapositions are found everywhere in this blended feminine neutral design style.

Anchor Rugs Under Furniture Feet
Follow these basic rules for an area rug: “In a living room, all four legs of the sofa and chairs in a furniture grouping should fit on it the rug should define the seating area,” says Breining. “At the very least, the front two legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on it,” he adds.
Even living rooms with less than generous proportions usually require an 8-by-10-foot or a 9-by-12-foot rug to properly accommodate a seating area. Go too small with the rug size and everything looks out of scale.
Design To Your Routine
With a few key furniture pieces and accessories, you can make your daily arrival and departure sequence a breeze. Typically, it’s not a huge space, so you’re working with a limited number of pieces, said Mr. Ford. If youre the kind of person who likes to drop everything when you walk in the door, a console with drawers is great, because its a nice place to hide your keys and mail, Mr. Ford said. Or, in the absence of drawers, a bowl, tray or other sculptural container can serve as a catchall to help keep things organized.
Another helpful element is a wall-mounted mirror, said Mr. Ford. It gives you one last chance to check yourself before you walk out the door.

Interior Design Compared With Interior Decorating
Interior design and interior decorating are often mistaken for the same thing, but the terms are not completely interchangeable. Interior design is a profession that requires specific schooling and formal training, including space planning, furniture design, and architecture. An interior decorator does not have that formal training and focuses on the aesthetics and the surface appearance of a space. Who you would hire depends on whether you have any structural work or space planning to be done or you need someone to plan the decor only.
Scandinavian Interior Design Style
Bedroom design by online interior designer, Julian Francisco A.
Scandinavian design is one of the easier interior design types to recognize. Think light, airy, and organic. Woods are almost always an ashy color in Scandinavian interiors. Nordic spaces give off a relaxing and inviting vibe. Key features include white walls, large mirrors, and cozy textiles. Furthermore, no Scandinavian space is complete without using the Danish concept of hygge. Layered fabrics, glass furniture, clean lines, and textures create the perfect cozy look.

Farmhouse Interior Design Style
Farmhouse is similar to country or rustic design styles except that its typically lighter, incorporates some shabby-chic, enjoys plenty of natural wood and gives an aura of a cozy feel.
Main style elements:
- Furniture pieces are functional and stylish but not too trendy and contemporary,
- Use of light colored wood and warm colors, and
- Light wood flooring dressed up with rugs in subtle color.
Inspired by the simple lifestyles in the Nordic countries, Scandinavian interior designers provide timeless interior designs and styles that are greatly characteristic of the fjords, snow, and mountains found in those countries.
Their designs are a true representation of pared-back coziness, a myriad of textures and some clean, refined lines. They are a beautiful work of art, but always so simple and subtle. Scandinavian designs are big on space, fewer accessories, natural light flowing in, and minimal furniture that serves some purpose.
This take on the interior style and design follows the Bauhaus principles that make use of fluid lines, all-white color palettes, wide plank flooring and a strong focus on object proportions. The designers also ensure that they use playful accent colors, organic materials and gentle contours. Scandinavian designs are best described as modern, practical and uncomplicated.
Tips To Get Started With Your Decor
A major pitfall that traps untrained decorators is editing. A good interior decorator can scan a room and understand what items work in a room and when something is too much, tasteful, or requires embellishment. A few tips in this area can make or break your room’s design choices.
One room element that can usually use an editorial eye is how pillows are placed. Pillows can be a nice accent adding to the room’s color story, or in some cases, even create a focal point for the room. However, some people have a tendency to overdo it with pillows. Avoid overloading a sofa to the point that a guest has to move all the pillows just to sit down.
Choices of artwork can be important for a room, but equally consider how you display it. A rule of thumb is to set wall hangings at eye-level. Similarly, the height you set the chandelier matters. A common mistake people make is hanging a chandelier too high or close to the ceiling. Drop it low enough that it brings light into the room and is noticed. If you hang it above a table, make sure that when you sit up from the table, your or any taller guests cannot knock into it.

Asian Zen Interior Design Style
Design by online interior designer, Luca C.
Ever heard of feng shui? You can bet youll find that philosophy utilized in our last pick for types of house décor styles. Asian Zen interiors are originally rooted from contemporary design. They focus on sleek lines, interesting shapes, and a relaxing atmosphere. As a result, references to nature are essential in creating the ultimate zen space.

Asian interiors are often asymmetrical and use circles more often than squares. Curtain walls or door panels are common to separate a larger space and give a sense of privacy. The color palette is drawn strictly from nature in order to keep the serene and calm vibes.

Call In A Pro To Declutter
The longer you live in a house, the less you see the mess over time. Sometimes you need a fresh pair of eyes. You can hire an organizer for a few hours to tackle bookshelves and closets, which stagers say are often packed with twice the amount of stuff they should hold.
Breining suggests whittling down what’s on your shelves by 50 percent. Then mix horizontal stacks of books among the vertical rows and intersperse decorative objects, such as bowls or vases, among them.

Scale Artwork To Your Wall
“There are few things more ridiculous-looking than hanging dinky little art too high on the wall,” says Breining. The middle of a picture should hang at eye level. If one person is short and the other tall, average their heights.
Also take scale into account for a large wall, go big with one oversize piece or group smaller pieces gallery-style. For the latter, don’t space the pictures too far apart 2 to 4 inches between items usually looks best.
Minimalist Interior Design Style
Minimalist style bedroom design by online interior designer, Kate S.
Contemporary design and minimalist design have a lot of the same qualities. Both have uncomplicated forms, clean lines, and simple finishes. However, the minimalist decorating style is inspired by Japanese design and concentrates on the principle that less is more. In the end, minimalist design loves empty space.
Minimal living room interior design by designer, Roberto D.
While most minimalist interiors have a neutral color scheme, primary colors can also be used as an accent color. Patterns are nowhere to be found and texture is a necessity. Because of the less is more philosophy youll find functional furniture is the most essential design element. Storage is also important in minimalist interior design. For this reason, furniture often doubles as hidden storage. For example, a coffee table that lifts up to reveal storage is one of the many creative solutions minimal interiors use.

Solution: Stylish Accent Pieces
Use accents to incorporate the look you enjoy without being overwhelming. If you have a house in the mountains and love the beach, display a collection of seashells or coral in or on a bookcase or end table instead of designing an entire beach-style room.
Don’t let your rooms feel dated by hanging onto dated cabinet hardware.
Rustic Interior Design Style
Rustic living room design by online interior designer, Lane B.W.
When looking at rustic interior design it can be defined with a few basic signs. There will always be natural materials, industrial touches, and farmhouse charm all around. The rustic design style was originally born from inspirations of the Romantic movement. It focuses on the simplicity and effortless beauty of nature. For rustic interiors, its common to see living room design ideas focused around a central statement fireplace.

The use of wood is softened by adding cowhides and sheepskin to create a cozy feeling. Fabrics dont have loud patterns and texture is everything. Unexpected additions like an industrial pendant light add to the sophistication of what we know as rustic interior design.
