What Makes An Interior Designer
Interior designers focus on proper space planning, as well as the aesthetics. Theyre involved in the construction or renovation of an entire home or business. This means they work from the ground up or take an existing property to the studs and rebuild it. Interior designers are often said to be professionals that move walls.
In addition to having an eye for design, they understand interior architecture, renovations, and construction processes. They work on either residential or commercial properties and their clients are architects, builders, Realtors, and homeowners.
Do You Need An Interior Decorator Or An Interior Designer
First, we want to make it clear we dont get too attached to labels. Our team usually refers to ourselves as interior designers, but we definitely dont bristle when someone calls us an interior decorator. Weve often found the distinction to be a generational one. Many in the Old Guard call themselves decorators, while those in the New Generation of design prefer the term designer.
Technically, they are two separate occupations. Depending on your design needs, you may select to work with one or the other.

How Do You Choose An Interior Designer

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:
- What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
- How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowners experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
- How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the projects total cost.
- How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.
Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, its most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

West Chester Woman’s Unique Artistic Vision Manifested Through Interior Design
Get Chester County Stories for Free!
West Chester resident Lauren Francis, a corporate executive who moonlights as an interior designer, manifests her artistic vision through what she calls Maximalist Aesthetic, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.
Maximalism in design is about extravagance, excess, and redundancy in the best possible way, said Francis, who grew up in Chadds Ford and graduated from Unionville High School. It is about layering patterns, color, and a texture in a space to tell a unique story.
Seven years ago, her reliance on this aesthetic helped her transform a West Chester house in dire need of renovation. It became her dream home, where she has resided ever since. She packed the home with artwork collected over the years, filling every wall and crevice with pieces she obtained from as far away as Germany.
A daughter of artist Lorraine Thorpe, who once owned Lorraines Frame Cellar in Unionville, Francis developed her artistic vision by visiting museums, art galleries, antique stores, and many other places around the world.
She has a full-time job elsewhere, but she uses her off hours for design and curation.
I work for an incredible company that has given me the resources to really indulge and cultivate that which makes me feel full of light in my personal life, she said.

Lets describe an ideal scenario for the Laura U Design Collective. A wonderful client has just purchased a home in need of extensive renovations or is planning a new construction project. They contact us immediately. We discuss their style, passions, what brings them joy, how they want their home to functionall the little details. Through the process we build a relationship with the client, which is important because some projects take years to complete!
When construction begins, well make frequent site visits and participate in the construction process. The initial construction phases are technical and require a trained eye. An interior designers formal education and training ensures the space plan, structural details, and design elements are executed properly. Being there in the beginning stages and understanding the materials used is essential. We get a feel for the build team, who are our partners for several months.
Once the build out is complete, we begin with the decorating portion: painting, furnishings, and final touches. We design and build many benchmade furnishings for our clients, and it takes weeks for these items to be completed. Its a full-time job in itself to manage the logistics of getting all the elements together in time!
From the initial drawings to placing the last accessory, interior designers are involved in the entire process.
What Do Interior Designers Do

Clients usually hire an interior designer at the start of a construction project. Theyll partner with architects and builders to help develop floor plans, electrical, and plumbing plans. Interior designers make project specifications for things like floors, millwork, moldings, lighting, and countertops.
Ideally, we engage at the earliest possible moment. These are our favorite kinds of projects, when we can assist the build team. As a full-service firm, we offer both interior design and residential building design services, making it that much easier for collaboration. Weve also worked hand in hand with some of our favorite architects in the Houston area.

Whats The Difference Between An Interior Designer And An Interior Decorator
Interior designers operate more on the architectural side of building projects. Interior designers are generally experienced in construction and understand how architectural planning works, according to NewSchool of Architecture & Design. And some interior designers will perform the duties of an interior decorator.
Interior decorators, on the other hand, work with fabrics, accessories, furniture, art, colors, textures and materials to make the inside look fashionable and pleasant.

How Do You Find A Good Interior Designer
For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style so checking out many designers portfolios is a must and whose communication methods match yours.

Interior Decorator West Chester Pa

When my clients sought out an Interior Decorator for their new construction home near West Chester, PA, they were moving from a 1960s brick colonial with low ceilings and small windows to a new home with high ceilings and huge windows.
The rules of interior decorating change in these new environments. Things that worked in your old house, might not work in this new light and airy space. These clients wanted a fresh start for furnishing the grand foyer and great room in their new home.
First, I drew up a floor plan of the new space to determine the sizes of furniture and area rugs we would be looking for. I prefer that clients sit on their sofas before buying so we went to a showroom together to find a sofa and TV chairs they would feel comfortable in everyday that also fit our style and size requirements.
I found that the clients were drawn to fabrics with a dreamy, painted quality again and again, so we incorporated those in our draperies and pillows. The hand drawn pattern along the edge of the draperies draws the eye to the gorgeous view and takes full advantage of the lofty ceilings. This room feels so inviting, calm, and airy.
