Tip 7 Steal From Other Rooms

DESIGN HACKS! 5 Things Every Living Room Needs | Julie Khuu

Dont be afraid to scrounge around other rooms for artwork, home decor, toss cushions and more. You might be surprised at how one item that lived in a certain room for years looks AMAZING in another!

So, there you have it. If youre looking for more, my E-Book re: The 5 Room Fix: Loving the Home You Have ALSO includes a FREE accent colour booklet, so if youre not sure where to go from here, Ive got some great solutions!

I have SO much more I could add, but at some point, were both going to be exhausted, so thats it for now and stay healthy!

Soften With Curved Edges

When decking out your small living room, look for furniture with curved edges to offset all the harsh angles, from the doorframe to the windows. An oval midcentury coffee table in warm wood softens the look in this small, cosy living room, and the glass top prevents it from feeling bulky.

Circular cushions work well too, and we can personally recommend this circular jute rug from La Redoute , available in a range of sizes . Curvy furniture, soft furnishings and even the cute rounded leaves of a money plant will make a small living room feel inviting.

Get The Right Lighting

For your living room to look put together, you need three lighting types: ambient, task, and accent. To make this happen, you might consider a mix of overhead chandeliers, table and floor lamps next to the main sofa for accent, and wall sconces for ambient lighting. Lighting can be quite tricky, so make sure to have an overall idea of how your living room will be arranged before you buy lighting.

When it comes to lighting, you can have some fun. We always get questions like, Should I use two matching lamps? The answer is: you don’t have to! Depending on your living rooms style, you can play around with the pieces you add.

For example, you can use a statement lamp on one side that goes with your side table, but on the other side, choose a floor lamp that provides different lighting. Not only are you choosing the right light style for each portion of your living room, but youre also adding more pieces to make the space look more intriguing.

Here are some lighting ideas for your home to give you some inspiration.

A gallery wall will always be a popular way to display favourite artwork and photos. But in a tight space, one large piece of artwork could stop the space from feeling cluttered and busy. Here, a large abstract print with tones of mustard and pink tie in with the best sofa, while the rest of the space is kept bright and minimalist.

Size Matters With Living Room Decor

Living room decorating idea by designer Ilaria C.

Whether we talk about furniture, rugs or artsize matters! Especially when looking for small living room , we often notice that people tend to choose smaller sofas, small art etc. But the risk with going small is that your living room could end up feeling smaller and more cluttered, and we dont want that!

Instead, a bigger sofa will ground the space and make it look bigger. And a huge artwork can be enough to create a wow factor! So dont be afraid to go big!

Anchor Rugs Under Furniture Feet

Follow these basic rules for an area rug: “In a living room, all four legs of the sofa and chairs in a furniture grouping should fit on it the rug should define the seating area,” says Breining. “At the very least, the front two legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on it,” he adds.

Even living rooms with less than generous proportions usually require an 8-by-10-foot or a 9-by-12-foot rug to properly accommodate a seating area. Go too small with the rug size and everything looks out of scale.

Do: Put A Tray On Your Coffee Table

If youve been following EHD for a while you know we are tray LOVERS. They add more texture, look super pretty, and corral your things. A practical decor item does exist! Just kidding, there are a bunch but this one is our favorite. Plus it can be super affordable. Trays come at almost every price point.

We like to contrast our tray shapes to our coffee table shapes. It keeps things visually interesting. Look at how great this rectangular wood one is on Emilys beloved coffee table. It also perfectly holds some books, coasters, and a snack bowl . But you could also replace the bowl with a candle, small plant , and/or of course, add your TV remotes.

Oh, and you can also use trays on your credenzas for a little mini-bar setup. It looks very cute, intentional, and obviously fun. See Ems version in the photo above?

Also note how Emily Bowser also contrasted the shape of her tray to her coffee table? If she hadnt corraled those pretty decor pieces, they may have looked a little all over the place. Its a really great trick I promise. Just try it if you havent already.

Use Visual Tricks To Raise The Ceiling

4 LIVING ROOM LAYOUT IDEAS | Easy Transformation

If your ceilings are on the low side, paint them white to make the room feel less claustrophobic. Hang curtains higher than the windows, suggests Allen-Brett, to trick your eye into thinking the room is taller. Most standard curtain panels measure 84 or 96 inches, allowing you to go about 3 inches above the window casing before the length gets too short.

If you want to hang them higher, you’ll have to order custom drapes. Love patterned panels? Try vertical stripes the lines visually elongate your walls. Leaning a large mirror against a wall can also make a room seem taller.

Open Up With A Serving Hatch

Forget all those 70s connotations of serving hatches. Instead, think of how this addition could bring light and space to your small living room ideas.

A simple rectangle cut in between your living room and kitchen will make both your rooms feel larger without having to commit to an open-plan living room layout. Plus, you can still use the space for its intended purpose, except leave the pineapple hedgehogs behind.

Tip 4 Center Your Main And Secondary Furniture Pieces On Something

Its important to CENTER your main pieces based on what theyre facing or what theyre against. For example:

  • If a piece of furniture is facing the fireplace/tv, it should be perfectly centred on it.
  • If the furniture is against a window , it should be PERFECTLY centred on the window. This also applies to wall spaces, as long as the wall space doesnt extend ridiculously far or into another space

Choose Light Colours For The Walls

Dark colours are definitely having a moment right now, but they can be tricky to work with in small spaces. Light colours tend to work best so stick to pale tones such as white, cream, and grey to keep your room scheme light, airy and open especially effective in spaces with minimal natural light sources.

Light shades will make any small living room ideas feel fresh and inviting cosy, and yet not closed in. Steer clear of brilliant whites and instead pick those with a subtle green, grey or taupe tone. With so many different shades available choosing the best white paint can feel like a minefield be sure to try tester samples in the space before you paint.

For our Decorating Dilemmas column, we cant even count the number of times weve gotten this question: I just moved into my new home, and I have no idea where to start! Thats because decorating a room completely from scratch is intimidating! You have no where to start and yet so many choices to make. We pulled together some easy jumping off point so you can start decorating your room from scratch:

1. Find a Piece of Artwork You Love

When we design the rooms for our catalog, we have the same dilemma. We have a completely blank canvas with endless possibilities. More often than not, well use a piece of artwork as a starting point. If you look closely at this piece by our Exclusive Artist Rick Reinert, youll see there are some persimmon oranges and lots of different shades of blue. We wanted to emphasize those colors in the painting, so we used them for our upholstery, pillows, and a bright blue rug.

2. Start with a Rug

Our Catherine Rug is one of our all time favorites because its subtle but has some really pretty shades of light blue. We wanted to really draw out those icy blues for this living room, so we chose complementary fabrics and artwork. Our new Cleo Glacier and Minsk Glacier fabrics pair perfectly.

Personalize Living Room Decor

Incorporating items that reflect your travels, hobbies, and cherished memories can make your living room feel extra special. Display ancestral portraits, framed genealogical charts, maps representing your favorite places, and photo collages featuring family and friends. Hang letters or signage that reference your initials or a familial surname for a cheap living room decor idea. Look to family heirlooms, hand-me-downs, or thrifted items to keep your living room decorating on a budget.

Tip 1 Center Your Main Piece Of Furniture On Your Focal Point

I Paid a Stranger $10 to Design My Living Room

If your main piece of furniture is off-centre, your room will feel off-balance. Im always amazed at how shoving a sofa 2-3 feet to the left or right can make a MASSIVE DIFFERENCE in the flow and energy of a room. If you CANT centre your main piece , its okay, I forgive you.

Now, of course, that can change depending on the layout you choose. In this next photo, we COULD have put the sofa opposite/parallel to the fireplace with the chairs on either side , but with having kids, my sis-in-law wanted a more open approach.

Yes, that one pouf does need to be moved in front of the one chair

For a practice in BALANCE, which well be chatting about in Step 3, I want you to draw an invisible line down the middle of the above room, right through the TV and fireplace. Notice that although different pieces were used, each SIDE of the room/focal point is balanced, so that one side doesnt visually weigh more than the other.

A few things to notice in the above display

  • the two chairs with cushions/side table visually balance the sofa on the other side
  • the small gallery wall/lamp balance some of the visual weight of the windows
  • the home decor on the built-ins are different from each other, but visually, carry the same weight
  • the green accent colour is spread throughout in at least three places as is the blue

Set The Tone At The Front Door

If you want your house to make a great first impression, paint the front door a fun, glossy hue. “Red is a lucky color in many cultures,” says Lara Allen-Brett, a New Jersey-based stager. A red door meant “welcome” to weary travelers in early America, and on churches it represents a safe haven.

Two other hues gaining favor: orange and yellow, according to San Francisco-based stager Christopher Breining. Both colors are associated with joy and warmth. One thing that should go: an outdated screen door. Get rid of it or replace it with a storm door with full-length glass that you can switch out for a screened panel.

Designers agree: A great living room starts with a great sofa. “So often, I come into a house, and the owners have good taste, but they already have a sofa that they want to work with,” explains stylist and TV host Emily Henderson. “They don’t want to replace it because it’s not that old and they don’t mind it. I’ve had to break the news over and over that, with a sofa like that, they would never get the room they want.”

Choose A Sizable Sectional

Nothing says welcome like an oversized sectional sofa. Its the perfect tool for creating an immediate sense of casual comfort. Choose wisely, and your sectional can simultaneously establish coziness and sophistication, like the emerald green stunner in this living room by Jette Creative. “We wanted it to be a livable room for family nights watching TV, but also a space to have company a space where the kids could roll around, but also that could allow for adult gatherings,” says Jesse DeSanti, principal designer of Jette Creative. “We were able to bridge those through the deep, long sectional that really grounds the room in its size, color and softness.”
