When In Doubt Keep It Neutral
I’m personally a huge fan of keeping the walls neutral. This can mean white, light to medium gray, greige or even tan.
Whatever your color preference is, keeping it light and neutral means it will serve as the perfect backdrop for the other elements you will introduce to the room – furniture, rugs, art, etc.
Plus, if you like to constantly switch up your decor and accessories, its so much easier when you have a neutral backdrop that won’t compete.

Get A Set Color Scheme
Beginning your how to start decorating your new home journey, its important to nail down a color scheme. You can get some ideas from new custom homes. Inspo that you gather from those examples can be translated to bathroom design or even help you decide which baby bedroom furniture set to purchase for your baby.
Designing a room around one primary color is an easy way to create a unified space. You can use this one dominant color as an accent color or use it throughout the space. Either way, remember you always want to stay away from using just two main colors in any room. Some people may find this easier when they are choosing painted colors than when they are picking out fabrics due to the fact that fabric has so many other properties besides color.
Its important that you create a balanced room by using secondary and tertiary colors. These are the colors found between the main and secondary colors on the color wheel. These include shades of red, yellow, and blue on either side of their respective primaries, as well as green, purple, orange, and pink on either side of their secondary colors.
Anchor Rugs Under Furniture Feet

Follow these basic rules for an area rug: “In a living room, all four legs of the sofa and chairs in a furniture grouping should fit on it the rug should define the seating area,” says Breining. “At the very least, the front two legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on it,” he adds.
Even living rooms with less than generous proportions usually require an 8-by-10-foot or a 9-by-12-foot rug to properly accommodate a seating area. Go too small with the rug size and everything looks out of scale.

Where Do I Start When Decorating A Room
Start With the Center Piece
The rest of the room revolves around it. In the bedroom, this piece is usually the bed. In the living room, it can be an expensive couch, a grand painting, or even a center table. Thismakes it easier to redecorate the room according to your tastes, and organizes the work.
Shop Flea Markets Consignment Stores Yard Sales & Craigslist
Purchasing furniture brand new is simply not an option for many people on a tight budget. The good news is that you can find great deals on furniture, light fixtures and art at flea markets, consignment stores, Craigslist and even yard sales. Hunting down deals can be fun and you often find pieces that are much better quality than many things that are manufactured these days.

Take Fixed Elements Into Account
Fixed elements are those that are not easily changed, such as trim, millwork and cabinets. The color of your trim and even the color of your kitchen cabinets will majorly impact your design choices.
Craving the bright, clean modern look for your new home? Then you may want a bright, crisp white trim. If your home is full of honey oak, you’ll want a paint color that will work alongside that and the other furniture that you will bring into the space. On the other hand, if you have beautiful millwork, you may want to highlight that with a contrasting color.
Pick Your Color Palette

The last step in the planning process is to come up with the color scheme for your space. Whether you paint your walls or not, having a focused color palette is what will set your room apart.
Look back to some of the inspiration you pulled and see if theres a common color theme. If not, do you prefer a more neutral home? Or do you like to have a few pops of color in any given room? Or are you all for color and ready to go full-steam with a bold technicolor bedroom?
Theres no right or wrong way to approach color, but if youre a design beginner, we suggest sticking to a considered palette of two to three light neutral shades.

Choose How You Want To Live
This is the most difficult part. There are no right or wrong answers. You can have a traditional or modern room, or a more relaxed space, or a space that is visually warm or cool. You have to think about how you want to live in the space. said Ms. Hampton. What will you do? Is there a lot of people living there? Do you have children? How do you envision your life?
A home that hosts large dinner parties should look different than one that is used for casual dining. A living space that is designed for hosting lavish fundraisers should be different from one that is used by someone who only dreams of watching TV.
Determine The Mood Of The Space
Have you ever gone to a really swanky restaurant or lounge and thought wow this place is really bougie? As the hostess escorts you to your table you notice the dim lighting, the tables are sleek and low to the ground, and the seating consists of dark blue velvet and chestnut leather. Once youre seated, you notice the soft jazz playing in the background, everyone around you is dressed really sophisticated. and then all of a sudden, you notice yourself sitting a little straighter, acting a little more proper, or maybe even speaking differently? This all has to do with mood. Every detail of your decor choices will determine the mood your space will create. So if, for example, you want your home to be warm and inviting, yet sophisticated and elegant, your design choices will need to reflect that. So, decide what you want your room to feel like. Once you do, it will help you narrow down your design style.

Introduce A Coffee Table

However small or large your living room, a coffee table adds a decorative and practical note. Opt for one that contains storage, whether its an upholstered ottoman or a generous piece with shelving.
Glass options like this one are a good idea because they wont dominate a compact space. Use it to display books, candles and flowers and place it close to seating. Moving your accessories around every so often will help to switch up the look.
Begin Decorating Your Living Room
First, get rid of any decor you dont like. Consider a new living room wallcovering instead. It might be a good idea to begin the how to start decorating your new home in the living room. When it comes to decorating your living room, you can choose from a variety of styles, patterns, and designs. If you are having a hard time deciding what to put in your living room, here is some helpful advice to help you out.
TIP 1: COLOR SCHEMES
Color schemes can be chosen based on the season or the time of day. For instance, if your bedroom is done in many shades of blue with white trim, the living room could have a different color scheme with a little more contrast.
TIP 2: FURNITURE
Your furniture set can make all the difference in the world. Choose furniture that compliments the existing pieces and color schemes that you want for your living room. Choose furniture sets that include items like coffee tables and sofas that match each other as well as your existing décor.
TIP 3: ACCENT ITEMS
Accent items are those decorative items that stand out from the rest of the decor. You may want to use accent items such as throw pillows or blankets to add interest to an area of your living room. This can be done by choosing accent colors or patterns that are different from those used in other areas of your home. Accent items also include artwork and collectibles.

Build Around Your Space
Space planning, which impacts scale, is essential. People often use furniture that is too large or too small for a space. I like to blame a certain retail company for the large-scale furnishings that saturate interiors today. Build around the furniture that you actually have space for. Think about the balance of a space. For larger rooms, consider establishing zones for different activities: a seating area that is conducive to conversation another area for television viewing a work area with a desk or table for projects or games. Even though I love symmetry, you can make things feel too contrived when you make everything symmetrical. Think about the visual weight and distribution to balance out a space. Proportion and scale are key to any design.
Start With The Biggest Piece In The Room First

Now that youve broken down your decorating plan to one room at a time, take the same concept and focus on finding the most important piece in the room.
The biggest piece in the room is usually the most important and most expensive. Thats why its important to start with that one piece and work your way from there. In a dining room, start with the dining table. For your living room, choose your sofa or sectional first. In your bedroom, the bed is the most important piece in the room.
Pro decorating tip: The biggest piece in the room is likely where youll invest the most money. It usually gets the most use in the room, therefore quality is important. You can probably save some money on accessorizing, picking up secondhand bedside tables or finding an inexpensive coffee table, but never skimp on your sofa!

Pillows, plants, throw blankets, baskets, flowers, vases, lighting, window treatments.and more. Slowly layer in texture and color into your home and youll be amazed by the difference it can make.
And if you know me, I love pillows more than I love chocolate . Its a great way to add color and texture to your room. What more can you ask for?? Check out this post to see the many different ways I make my no sew pillow covers all pictured on this couch
This past year, I have embraced plantsreal ones, the ones I can kill in a hot minute Guess what though.. I have not killed any of them . I amaze myself everyday. If you cant handle the real deal, dont fear the faux. I say it all of the time. Add in some faux plants and greenery. A pop of greenery can take a room up a notch. Baskets are also a great way to add texture into your room, throw a plant in a basket and you killed two birds with one stone. Poor little birdie
Window treatments are a great way to add color into your space. I have made most of my window treatments. And one day I will do a round up of all the ways I have made my own curtains

Break Down Your New Home Decorating Plan By Room
The fastest way to get overwhelmed by an empty new home is by trying to decorate the whole house at once. Prioritize what rooms are most important to you and make a decorating plan, one room at a time! Maybe youll want to start with your bedroom, living room and laundry room. Pick two or three rooms maximum and plan to decorate them one at a time.
Matching all the rooms in the house is a design myth. If you decide you want a transitional bedroom but a modern living room, go for it! Your home will have far more personality when you decorate from scratch, one room at a time. Just be sure to add a unifying element to all the rooms for flow, like a certain color, or a decor item in the homes architectural design style.
Pro decorating tip: Not sure which rooms to start with? Think about what rooms you spend the most time in. Youll want to do those first. You can always do the guest room later close the guest room door and forget about it for a while.
