How To Decorate Windows With Blinds

Add A Roller Blind Pelmet

Blinds & Shades : How to Decorate Windows with Blinds

Roller blinds are a brilliant choice for bathrooms as the fabrics are processed which means they are more resilient in humid rooms and can be wiped more easily. They also have a number of other benefits as the founder of Loom & Last , Harry Cole, explains.

‘Roller blinds are a great choice if you are looking to maximize daylight and make smaller windows appear taller. Neat and tidy they roll up, taking up just a small portion of the windowpane ensuring full visibility and sunlight throughout the day.’

To bring a touch of pattern and natural charm to a neutral bathroom consider a blind in a stylized floral print. While they are easy to fit into recesses, the tops of roller blinds can be an eyesore, so why not hide them with a pelmet?

If you’re installing a roller blind in a recess, you can now choose to have a smart pelmet made in a matching fabric to cover the roll. This has revolutionised the use of roller blinds, making them much more attractive and so usable in all rooms of a house! You could even choose a contrasting color for a playful twist, says Vanessa Arbuthnott .

Pick A Slubby Linen For A Relaxed Country Appeal

Whereas a bedroom benefits from black-out blinds, a kitchen is a place to welcome in the natural morning light.

Roman blinds, which fold up rather than roll, which arent too heavy work well in this breakfast area by interior designer Sophie Ashby at Studio Ashby, as they allow you to control how much light comes through.

Match Blinds To Your Wallpaper

If you love print why not inject a double dose of it by using the same design on blinds and walls? Traditional bathrooms with grand proportions are great spaces for using decorative prints as the designs are allowed to really shine, while making the space feel more cosy and intimate. For classic elegance perfect for a traditional bathroom you cant go wrong with a sinuous chinoiserie-style design in blue and white such as this Les Pecheurs design from Warner House .

‘Bathrooms are a great place to create a sense of drama so be brave and use the same pattern on all the walls and even the same design on blinds or curtains. Whether you are going for a classic or an ultra-modern look, there is a wide choice of designs to suit all styles,’ says Lee Clarke, director at Warner House.

Style With Single Curtains

If you have a sequence of large windows in a room, choose single curtains instead of pairs hung centrally to give a contemporary, laid-back look. Omit holdbacks for a further relaxed feel, instead opting for a lightweight fabric such as linen as it gathers and drapes beautifully.

Allow plenty of length on the curtains so they pool on the floor to complete the look.

Stylists tip: Use a narrow chrome pole with small curtain rings so as not to overpower the overall effect. Small curtain rings will also allow you to gather the curtains more tightly to let in more light in the absence of tie-backs.

Repurposed Object Curtains For A Simple Solution

Curtains can be held up by many things besides traditional rods. A simply painted board with hooks attached make a stylish alternative. Its even better if the board comes with a weathered look from being outdoors for many years. Add a filmy tabbed curtain to hang from the boards hooks and the look is complete.

Combining Draperies With Soft Window Treatments

Draperies and Roman Shades

One timeless window treatment combo is layering drapes over Roman Shades. Because they’re both soft window treatments, they play well together and give your room a cozy feel. For versatility, choose light filtering Roman Shades for daytime privacy and blackout curtains to block light at night.

Note: Roman shades can leave small gaps on the sides of the window where light can shine through. Adding drapes on top will help give you complete darkness and a more upscale look.

How Do I Choose A Curtain Header

The main options are eyelet usually where large, metal rings are set within the fabric at the top of the curtain and easily loop onto a curtain pole or pleated a more classic look where gathered folds run along the top of a curtain which can be attached to a track or a pole with hooks. There are then further variations between these looks, which all give slightly different appearances.

At Warner House we love the pinch pleat heading triple pinch for a heritage look, double pinch for a sleeker finish, says Emma Clarke, director, Warner House. ‘Be generous with your widths to avoid lacklustre, thin curtains. Hang curtains above the window frame for extra height and to showcase a fabulous sweeping design.’

Once youve decided, you can then start to have fun choosing a curtain pole, or take a look into pelmets to cover the top of the curtain entirely.

Valances With Mini And Micro Blinds

How to Decorate Windows in a New Home : Window Treatments & Decor

Mini and micro blinds have slats that are about a 1/2 or 1-inch thick. Theyre almost unnoticeable and very lightweight great if you want the focus to be on the valance.

This valance was installed near the ceiling to add height to the room. Bold trim like this indigo blue tassel fringe is a great way to put focus on a valance and its unique shape. But because this window was right next to a reading nook, it was necessary to add a mind blind for privacy as well.

Speaking of shape on a valance, heres another custom valance that was constructed in an arched shape.

Blinds are a must for bedrooms, especially when the window is right next to the bed like we see here. The room has a monochromatic design theme, using mostly light gray and white. While the mini blind was white to continue this, the pointed valance was made using a gold and black fabric to make the room more interesting.

This floral valance was installed on curtain holdbacks. Banding in olive green was added to its bottom hem for interest.

Heres a similar idea. Although this valance is actually made with several layers rather than just having banding at the bottom. This valance couldve also done well with a darker colored blind that coordinates with the fabric, not just a blind in white.
