How to Decorate Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

When I was painting our kitchen cabinets almost exact two years ago, I was planning on replacing two of the kitchen upper cabinets with glass inserts. But when I finally got down to that last step, I was so tired yall. Id been working on the kitchen for over four months and I just didnt have it in me to paint the interior of the cabinet, cut the doors, get a piece of glass and get it inserted.

But that project has never left my mind for years. I finally looked at Chris last week and said, Thats itI am updating those kitchen cabinet doors!

Last month marked three years that we have been in this home. And when I think back to what the kitchen looked like on move in dayit kinda blows my mind.

We have already done so many improvements to this space. But I just knew the glass cabinets would be a big improvement. Heres a picture from our summer home tour that shows what the upper kitchen cabinets looked like before this new little update

Use A Repeating Shape When Styling The Shelves

Repeating shapes is one of the hidden tricks of good styling. Use many different objects that all share the same shape, but are made of different materials. Your eyes happily jump around from thing to thing and is pleased to see the harmony, without even noticing it.

This display showcases the circle shape on many different vintage finds. Other rounded objects multiply the effect.

Create A Vignette On The Top Of The Cabinet With Larger Accessories

Last, but definitely not least, the top of a cabinet or hutch is a fun canvas to feature larger items that dont fit inside. You can either carry through the theme youve got going inside the cupboard, or block off the glass fronts if showing the inside would be too busy. At Christmas time, my house gets very busy with decor, so I decided to simply tape some burlap fabric to the inside of these glass doors. The change was a nice rest for my eyes.

As you might have guessed, styling glass front cabinets is one of my favorite decorating jobs! Have I convinced you that you need more glass front cabinets in your life? I hope so! They hold so much decorating possibility and can be used in any room of your home. Theyre a great way to enjoy all the fun vintage things without getting too cluttery. And if youre square-feet challenged, like me, they are a big decorating bang for the footprint.

Hutch displays can offer many of these same decor possibilities, and I cant wait to see how the rest of my Lifestyle of Love friends decorated their homes. Visit the talented Emily at Le Cultivateur next she has ahhhmazing vintage-filled displays in her home!

When we remodeled our kitchen we took down the existing cabinets and added these glass front kitchen cabinets that used to be in the butlers pantry.

Maybe its because they look so classic.

Maybe its because they make a room feel so much more open.

Maybe its because we already had them and they were free.

Maybe its because they remind me of Emily Gilmores kitchen on Gilmore Girls.

I cant help it. I just love glass front kitchen cabinets.

I think I need to write another post about free cabinets and how to add a little plywood and some molding and re-use them and re-create them and make them feel like they stepped out of the pages of a high-end design magazine. Create Balance + Harmony

Now that you have your color palette, kitchen items, and functional placement you are ready to start styling. For styling take a look below at a few tips to help guide the creativity of your glass front cabinet masterpiece!

    • If your cabinet doors divide the glass then be sure to place items in columns so you can clearly see all of the items when the doors are closed.
    • A similar philosophy goes for the bottom row as well. Make sure to use stackable items that arent noticeably covered.
    • Leverage height to create visual interest by arranging items that vary in order to draw your eye upward.
    • Consider the visual weight that each item holds and be sure not to place two visually heavy items next to each other.
    • Example: If you choose to place a large black bowl next to a stack of black plates then that will bring too much focus to one area.
  • Remember how you use your kitchen!
  • Example: I find myself often shifting things around just to realize my glassware is on the complete opposite side of the kitchen from where I use it.
  • Consider using a combination of larger items mixed with smaller items. Maybe even consider adding a piece of art or a cookbook as long as its within your color pallet.
  • If you are considering glass front cabinets or already have them we hope these simple tricks are helpful. As always, please let us know if you have anything youd like to share!

    Choose A Color Scheme

The best and other design websites show that color is essential to styling. The right color palate can bring both uniformity and freshness to the kitchen, as well as illustrate your personal taste.

These tips detail how to decorate glass cabinets using a color scheme:

    • Choose 2-3 colors: While one color is too monochromatic and several can be chaotic, 2-3 complementary colors offer a cohesive but creative look.
    • Pair colors with another design feature: Choose colors that complement or play off another feature of your kitchen, such as a light fixture or rug.
    • Change it up: Switching out colors in accordance with the seasons or a holiday can give your whole kitchen a fresh look.

What Kind Of Shelving Should I Use In Glass

If you have interior cabinet lighting, the kind of shelving you use should be a key consideration.

    Why?

If you use traditional wood shelves, or any other opaque material, the light wont travel past the topmost shelf. If you want your interior cabinet lights to illuminate the entire cabinet, glass shelving is a must.

Besides, we think the glass shelves look incredibly elegant:

If you dont have any lighting in your cabinets, you can use wood shelves to create contrast between the cabinet interior and exterior. Traditionally, the interior of a glass cabinet has always matched the exterior, but theres more variability these days. Design Consultant Joey Cooke

For example, take a look at this recent new-build project, where black metal rail doors with glass inserts are juxtaposed with natural maple shelving.

If contrast isnt your cup of tea, you can always go the traditional route and match your shelves to your cabinet frame, like in this fresh white kitchen design:
