Do You Use Placemats With A Table Runner

Placemats can be used with table runners in the exact same fabric or in colors, textures and patterns that complement each other. The option of whether or not to include a tablecloth will depend on how formal the setting is.

In this regard, Are placemats still a thing?

Then its probably time to consider or perhaps reconsiderplacemats. Like formal dining rooms and fine china, placemats have mostly fallen out of style in favor of more minimalist, casual table settings. It makes sense. After all, theyre just one more thingto store, to set out, to wash, and then to put away again.

Do most people use placemats? Recent surveys found that up to 90% of USA households surveyed used placemats on a regular basis. Below are some excerpts from recent online surveys of the reason that households use placemats: They help protect a wood table from moisture, heat, dings and scratches. I also like every day to be a little bit special.

Mix and mix vases of various sizes and hues, and don’t feel obligated to fill them all with plants.

If the vases have colors that are similar to those in your home’s palette, they will blend in seamlessly.

If they don’t, look for alternatives that will go with your dining room’s decor.

What Should I Put On My Dining Table

When hosting there are key items you should always have on hand to dress your dining table.

The first thing to consider is the flatware and cutlery. Depending on what menu you are serving, layer up the necessary sizes of plates, topped by the bowl, if using. If you prefer to serve rather than host family style, this display still works, as you can simply pick up the correct dish as required to take to the sideboard for serving.

Water glasses and wine glasses should be set out in advance, too. For restaurant level style, lay out both white and red wine glasses on the dining table.

Other must-haves are napkins, water jugs and a beautiful centrepiece.

A Collection Of Urns Or Vases

Our Blue and White Chinoiserie Collection makes a gorgeous centerpiece, especially when stacked on top of books and acrylic risers. Weve made it easy to create this pretty arrangement because the whole collection is sized perfectly with the ideal mix of shapes. Rather than scattering your collection throughout the house, pile them on your dining room table to create a focal point.

Consider Your Table Shape

When choosing your decor, the first step is to think about the shape of your table a long table will require a completely different approach to something square or round. Table shape depends on the shape of the room, says Rinfret. A rectangular or long table is good for a rectangular room and you can add leaves or extend them when necessary. I love a round table in a relatively square room and it’s conducive to conversation.

Not only is a round table great for small dining room ideas, but it creates a clear centerpiece for any space which you can boost with your own central table decor. A round table is a wonderful way to create a social environment in your dining space, says interior designer Emma Sims-Hilditch . We often place an arrangement of beautiful seasonal flowers in the centre to draw the eye and reflect the natural beauty of the homes surroundings.

Displaying Multiple Items In The Middle

Heres the thing: if you are grouping a number of objects in the middle of your table, they need to make sense together and they need to be contained. What I mean when I say contained is that they shouldnt be just randomly spread all over the table.

If you just pop random objects on your table it reads as unresolved, or not properly styled.

The image above is a great example of unresolved table styling. Three items of almost the same height are just sitting in the centre of the table. It doesnt read as a design moment. Id take two of the objects away and bring in two taller objects to complete the look. Three items housed together always look best in situations like this.

How Do You Protect A Wooden Table Naturally

How To Decorate Dining Table When Not In Use

To protect your dining table either after finishing, there are several simple steps you can take to keep it protected.

Always use either a tablecloth or placemats to protect the wood for burns and marks, both under plates and any candle holders. Chargers are ideal, too, sitting beneath a decorative placemat to add further protection to the table. Coasters are hugely important – water rings are nearly impossible to get rid of, so make sure you have plenty to hand.

Its also beneficial to use a cloth to wipe the table after use, first dry to get rid of any excess crumbs, and then wet to prevent any marks from setting in.

Add Ambiance With Lanterns

If you want a low-maintenance but effortlessly chic way to add decor to the dining table, turn your eye toward silver, black, or bronze-painted lanterns. According to Pottery Barn, lanterns are an elegant decoration that introduces warmth and ambiance to a room. For a budget-friendly option, add battery-operated and remote-controlled candles to the inside of the lanterns. This decision will create a shining dining table centerpiece to set the mood and spark conversations over the dinner table.

However, not all lanterns need glowing candles. You can also open that glass door and ornament the lantern with some unique finds. Most lanterns look amazing with various items such as sand, seashells, fruit, pinecones, or faux greenery inside. Display some items from your travels or family photos. If glass surrounds your lantern, be mindful that the decorations look visually appealing from all sides. Let your inspiration flourish with a monochromatic or diverse color palette.

One Moment Is Never Enough

Dining table centrepiece ideas for square tables are probably the ones people find the trickiest to get right. With round dining tables, theyre so small you dont need much to get the look right. And with rectangle tables, you can lay a table runner down the centre to decorate along. But what about square tables? How do you make them shine?

The biggest tip I can give you here is that one moment on your tabletop is not going to be enough. As I said above with round dining tables, one moment doesnt mean one object . One moment could be one vignette .

When decorating the top of a square dining table, I would advise you to have three moments on top of the table in a triangular configuration .

In the above image via Harvey Norman, Id take the black bottle and glass away and bring in a third item to complete the scene. A large bowl with an interesting shape would work well.

A More Minimal Centrepiece Approach

If you dont like the idea of having to move things around on the table when you eat, or you find yourself drawn to a minimal aesthetic at home, keep it simple. One small moment in the centre of your table is enough, I would just advise you to install a pendant above your dining table to give the area some interest.

In doing this, the pendant actually becomes the centrepiece even though its not on the tabletop. I love the example above via Kyal and Kara.

If you have just one moment on your square dining table and no pendant, it can often leave this pocket of your home feeling a little bare. Every room needs a focal point, so just make sure you give your dining room one.

Prefer A Minimal Dining Table Centrepiece

CENTERPIECE IDEAS for Dining Table | DIY How to Style a Table for Spring

If youre approach to decorating your tabletop is more minimal, a round dining table is the shape thatll work best. The image above via is a great example of a small round dining table where the tabletop itself is really pared back.

Notice though, that although the dining table centrepiece is minimal, the room still feels wonderfully resolved thanks to the pendant light sitting above the tabletop. This is a great thing to keep in mind not only in terms of how to resolve a room, but in ensuring that your tabletop centrepiece doesnt interfere with the pendant light above.

Design A Centerpiece With Candles

Create a stylish dining room table by making a candle centerpiece. Displaying candles as part of your decor introduces dimension and drama to the dining room table. According to , placing candlesticks in the middle of the table brings a tablescape into balance. This classic decoration harmonizes a look, whether the candles are grouped in pairs, trios, or staggered in odd numbers.

Corralling the candlesticks to a central area on the table creates a visual statement in the negative space. Choosing to decorate using candlesticks allows the decorator to introduce height to help break up the empty space. You could also go a step further and vary the length of each candlestick on the table in a mixture of tall and short. Candle arrangements can be elegant, timeless, and add distinction to your dining room table. Plus, they provide a soft glow that makes mealtimes cozier and more relaxed. The candle scents you should have in your dining room come down to your taste, but coffee and whiskey-scented options are almost always a good call.

Keep A Stockpile Of Your Favorite Books On Hand

A little stack of books and a yellow plant on a wooden dining table If you read a lot at your dinner table, or even if you don’t – its worth keeping some of your favorite books there.

Choose a small pile of your favorite books or a few coffee table books to keep on hand. You can stack these beside your centerpiece, arrange them beneath it, or swap the one you already have on display with them.

Books can add some unique character to your dining room table.

Ways To Display Vases

Vases are the easiest way to dress up dining tables that see everyday use, as they neednt take up lots of space. With a little thought, they can enhance any size of table, from a small square one to a long, formal table designed to seat twelve.

When choosing a vase, think about how youll echo the proportions of your table. Long, rectangular or square tables can take any vase shape, but curved shapes feel more natural on a round table. Consider scale too small and itll seem like the vase has been marooned on an empty surface, too large and itll overwhelm .

On tables that only get occasional use, you can get away with larger clusters of vases. Try arranging some small ones around a central statement piece on a round table, or place them in a row to accentuate the shape of a long design such as the simple display of Castleford vases in the last picture. Varying the heights and sizes of your vases helps to create a soft, elegant look if they were all the same size, it would just look too stiff.

You can add branches or flowers to your vases one or two stems can be striking but really, the idea is that they look just as good empty.

Inject Color Into A Neutral Space

How To Decorate Dining Table When Not In Use

Table decor has the ability to completely overhaul your dining room color ideas, and give a whole new look to the space especially if it has a neutral backdrop to make its mark on. In this example, a palette of mixed warm and cool neutrals is invigorated by blue glass candlesticks and tableware, which can easily be switched out at a later date to change the mood.

Another great way of injecting some life into a dining room is to include colored napkins as part of your tablescape, suggests Sims-Hilditch. These might pick out accent colors throughout the rest of the room, such as in the artwork of upholstery of the dining room chairs.
