How To Decorate A Long Hallway Wall

Go For Pastel Blue Hues For A Calming Entrance

Use a few different tones of the same color to create a calming, cohesive hallway design. We love how a darker blue has been used on the woodwork in this hallway, but the walls have been kept a lighter color that really lengthens the space. The blue floor tiles bring the whole look together, and that pop of yellow? Perfection.

Add Depth To Your Hallway With Contrasting Colors

If you want to add depth and interest to a hallway, consider interspersing dark shades among a lighter scheme.

If you’re worried about a dark color overwhelming a narrow space, couple it with a row of pendants or spotlights to create the illusion of a longer and lighter space. Deep sage green or gray hallway ideas are both on-trend options that would work nicely.

Up The Pattern With A Mural

This hallway, designed by Claire de Quénetain who’s known for my beautiful bold fabrics and murals proves that you can bring in a busy pattern in more subtle ways. A wall mural or wallpaper doesn’t have to go floor to ceiling, in this space it’s just used below the dado rail adding a punch of pattern that doesn’t overwhelm the room the space feels linked with the bolder prints used in the adjoining rooms but isn’t competing with it for the focal point.

‘To create an impactful hallway design it is important to consider colors and movement.’ says Claire. ‘Murals allow me to paint everywhere and create atmospheres each time very unique. I am challenged by the wishes of the clients who are choosing colors and designs to bring a special piece into their home, I love it.’

7. There’s never enough space in the hallway, leaving little room for accessories or other decorative items.

But adding wallpaper is an ideal way to add a design feature and personality to the area without taking up valuable space or over cluttering. Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper, advises: ‘Stripes are a classic choice for homes and can be used to create the illusion of space in a hallway. Horizontal stripes will lead the eye upwards and vertical stripes will elongate the area. Choosing light and neutral colours or the ever-popular shades of grey will also add to the feeling of air and space.’

8. Make a feature of period wood panelling by adding patterned wallpaper inside the panels.

‘This is a great option for maintaining and updating period features or if you’re worried that wallpapering the entire wall could feel overbearing. Alternatively, add wallpaper to an alcove or underneath the stairs to draw attention to the space,’ suggests Alex.

Paint Hallway Floorboards For A Quick And Cheap Update

If you’ve got plain wooden floorboards in your hallway, an easy way to add pattern to them is to simply throw down a rug… but if you want to go a step further, adding a tile pattern to the floorboards is a brilliant way to up the interest.

Use suitable floor paints and stick to a very muted scheme like this one for the best effect you want the floor to add character, not be the focus.

Draw The Eye Through The Space With Herringbone Flooring

Hallways tend to be small spaces, especially in more modern homes that haven’t been blessed with the acres of floor space you often find in the entrance of period properties. So in order to make these small spaces feel bigger, you need to make the most of some of the oldest design tricks in the book.

Flooring is a good place to start. Look for designs that draw the eye away from the door and avoid anything too busy like patterned tile. A herringbone pattern created either with tiles or wood flooring is perfect for making a small or narrow hallway seem longer as it gives that never-ending optical allusion to the room.

‘The hallway is the first space we see when we enter a home. Having a place for everything is absolutely critical. Look for unobtrusive places to put hooks, shelves and possibly some hallway furniture to make it easier for you and guests to de-robe and store things neatly,’ says Jo Littlefair, interior designer and co-founder of Goddard Littlefair . ‘A small mirror is an essential item on the route out of the house, ideally with a small shelf for a pen, hairbrush or lipstick. Children will unintentionally overwhelm you with coats and school bags, Ive designed furniture pieces for the home to hide these items as much as possible!’

Maximize Space With A Stylish Sliding Door

Sliding doors, or barn doors as they are also known, are a great option for small hallways as they take up much less space than a conventional door and blend seamlessly into a scheme if painted the same paint color. Plus, we think they look pretty stylish. This gorgeous idea is a great example of just how well sliding doors can work.

9. Clever painting techniques can help make a narrow corridor or hallway seem bigger.

‘Use a lighter colour at the top of the wall, and halfway down where a traditional dado rail might have gone change to another colour. But always with small rooms, use light coloured paints and furniture, to help give an illusion of more space,’ saysCato Cooper of The Emporium Somerset.

10. If the entrance to your home is quite compact, for flooring, avoid using intricate patterns and look at large format tiles in a highly polished, light neutral shade, advise the team at Topps Tiles.

‘This will create the illusion of a larger space and make the most of the natural light available. In larger, more open-plan spaces, you have the freedom to experiment with both pattern and print,’ Topps Tiles explain. ‘Play around with designs that draw the eye from the door and into the heart of the home. A beautiful parquet herringbone pattern is perfect for fooling the eye into seeing never-ending depth, while still keeping a traditional, warm and homely feel to the overall look.’

11. The size and length of a hallway should always be a key consideration when selecting a colour palette.

‘If the ceiling is low, you can make it appear taller by selecting colours that will create an optical illusion. In this case, avoid making the ceiling the same colour as the walls,’ Gillian says.

12. A small hallway can quickly feel cramped and cluttered. Want a quick fix?

Pay Attention To Scale

Select furniture pieces that are in proportion to the size of your entrance. Oversized consoles, chairs and entry table decor ideas can make a small hallway feel narrow, while furniture that is the same color as your walls tends to blend into the wall, making it look wider.

Another clever trick is to arrange your furniture at an angle to create a sense of depth to the room otherwise if you place all furniture against the walls you might end up with a ‘bowling alley’ look.

Welcome A Slim Console Table

Console tables are a great place to allow family belongings to accumulate, with drawers to hide away all those delivery menus and loose change.

Opt for a slim design, especially in narrow, corridor-style spaces to preserve a sense of openness. Wicker baskets placed at the side or underneath are a useful place for hiding away other knick-knacks.

Hallway Decor Ideas~hallways Often Get Ignored When It Comes To Decorating But There Is No Reason Your Hallway Cant Be Beautiful Ill Show You Some Inspiration For Your Hallways Especially If Your Hallways Are Narrow And Dark

The other day I posted a before and after of my hallway on and it got me thinking . I know I am not the only one that struggles with decorating their hallway.

Ive thought about this hallway for so long and it actually took me forever to write this post because who really wants to read about hallways? But you know what, I do.

I struggled with this hallway since the day we moved into this house. I walk through it 1258 times a day. It never felt right to me or cozy.

I guess hallways are meant to be cozy. But you know what I mean

And its always the smallest spaces that are the hardest to decorate. Our hallway is long, dark and narrow and I more than likely just described your hallway as well.

Hallways are often overlooked and they get ignored often. I ignored ours for a loooong time.

When we moved into this house, our hallway was this dark dungeon with dark, dark brown walls. How many times can I say dark? Also, the paint had specks of glitter in it. You cant see it in the picture but, dang, it was all I could see everytime I walked through our hallway.

Almost three years later, it now looks like this .

But it took me three years to get it to this point. I was just stuck. I had no idea what I wanted to do with this hallway. I spent many hours looking for inspiration and sometimes that is all it takes. All of sudden, things just started clicking.

Decide What Furniture To Put In Your Hallway

Just because hallways are often the smallest space in your home, that doesn’t mean they can’t squeeze in some functional furniture. These spaces are landing areas, they need a small console table to store your keys, lipsticks, dog leads, etc.

Or maybe a compact bench would be a better use of your space, somewhere to perch while you put on shoes . Benches can double up as places to dump, sorry we mean, neatly store bags.

Lighting: Transform A Dark Hallway

17. Transform a dark and dingy hallway with carefully positioned lighting, says Emily.

‘Directional wall lights can highlight a beautiful ceiling, and pendant lighting can be really effective in making a small space feel much bigger. A single pendant light can have the opposite effect, leaving too many shadows and patches of darkness. Instead, opt for multiple pendant lights running the length of your hall. This will draw the eye into the space and feel much warmer and inviting.’

18. Remember, lighting is just as important as colour when creating a mood.

‘If your hallways are simply designated points from A to B, then you want to make sure that your walkway is clearly lit,’ says Gillian. ‘Alternatively, you could illuminate your ceilings with uplights that bounce light off of the ceiling and then reflect down into the entire hallway.

19. Need more lighting tricks?

‘Layering of light is key when it comes to creating the impression of space in your hallway. LED step lights can help by creating drama,’ says Sally Storey, creative director of John Cullen Lighting. ‘A useful trick is to use 1W LED uplights to light a feature at the end of the hallway. This will draw ones eye down the hallway, creating the impression of space. Combine this with directional recessed downlights, to wash light down the walls, illuminating every inch of your hallway.’

Add Shelves For Keys And Accessories

Is your Victorian home in need of a revamp? Then carry on reading as we’ve got ways to modernized this architectural style.

First and foremost let’s talk about that dreamy door. Yes, pink is not for everybody, but where the walls and banister is kept relatively neutral, it’s a welcome addition to an otherwise traditional space.

To keep in line with these modern additions, the owner has introduced a round, wooden shelving idea.

Style A Console Table With A Rustic Nod

If you’re blessed with a large hallway, you may be wondering how to make the most of the space and prevent it from feeling too sparse. Well, friends, it’s time you met the console table.

A stylish addition to any modern hallway, a console table not only offers a space to store keys and other essentials, but it will also draw the eye and make your hallway look a little more interesting. Style with a mixture of vases, lamps, and baskets or something a little more unique like the gorgeous wooden door panels above.

Your Hallway Doesn’t Feel Warm Or Welcoming

13. Think about how you wish to feel in your home, as this will inform you of the colour and the direction you will go towards.

‘For example, for a warm glow the skirting could be a clotted cream colour , the walls could be in a soft butter yellow , and the ceiling could be a hint of peaches and cream . For a fresh, cool bask, the skirting could be a crisp light grey , the walls in a pale minty colour , and the ceiling the palest of azure ,’ says Gillian.

14. An easy way to introduce scent and atmosphere is through fresh flowers and fragrance.

Lisa Lewis, a Home Staging Consultant at Stylize, explains: ‘Display leaves and plants on both sides of the front door to create a balanced energy and open a window to let the light and fresh air in. Having plenty of natural light in the hallway signifies a warm and happy home. Continue this happy state by keeping the entranceway clear and add a beautiful vase of real flowers to represent life and growth.’

15. The ultimate hallway plant

‘The Fiddle Leaf pops up on our feed as the ultimate statement piece for a hallway what a welcome! The large, beautiful violin-shaped leaves are thick and leathery, the stem is substantial and robust. It prefers the indirect sun so by a door is often the perfect place,’ says Maddie Porritt, Head Buyer at The Stem.

16. Camilla Clarke, Creative Director at interior design studio Albion Nord, suggests using tapestries in hallways to add richness and warmth to a space that may not have much furniture.

Or Experiment With Color Blocking

Alternatively, if wall panels aren’t an option, you could think about trying color blocking in your hallway. This requires that you use one color to paint up to paint from the floor up to a certain height, then choose another color for use up to the ceiling.

Here white and a pretty millennial pink have been used, but you could choose whatever combination of colors you’d prefer.

Keep Hallway Woodwork Bright White

If green doesn’t appeal, perhaps this gorgeous mauve shade will. Another of our favorite ideas for hallways, it’s a color that promises to work in all seasons, especially when paired with a more neutral carpet.

Or even a carpet with a natural finish something like seagrass would work really well. However, if you’re picking a bold, deep shade for your walls, white woodwork to reflect as much light as possible is a must.
