For most interior designers, project management and accounting procedures are closely intertwined with a sequential dynamic that is continuous throughout a project. Once a project begins, so does an ongoing process of ordering materials and furniture, tracking production and shipment, and collecting payments

all of which occur in a prescribed order that must be properly managed to keep the project funded and operating on schedule.

Why Do Some Companies Prefer To Use Freelancers

How to Become (and stay) a Successful Interior Designer in ...

Many companies opt to hire full-time employees because they want a dedicated resource, whether on-site or remote. Because the interior design industry is largely project-based, it can be difficult for employers to estimate exactly how much work they will have in a given year.

This uncertainty makes freelancers an excellent choice for interior design companies, and the relationship is mutually beneficial for freelancers. There are several very good reasons that a company might choose to use a freelance interior designer.

  • They are looking for a very specific skillset and high-quality work.
  • They cant afford a full-time employee.
  • They only need part-time support for a one-time project.
  • They need support while continuing to grow, and may plan to hire a freelancer full-time once cash flow becomes more predictable.
  • They want to avoid paying significant taxes associated with employment or offering pricey benefits like PTO, health insurance, etc.

Sometimes companies will also initially work with someone as a freelancer, then decide that they want them as a full-time employee. During the time that theyve been working together, the freelancer and company have had time and exposure that will help them determine if its a good fit for each party.

How To Become An Interior Decorator: Drawing In Scale

Lets start by reviewing scale. Think of drawing in scale as what your room layout will look in real life. If done correctly, what fits in your scale drawing will fit in your clients actual room.

You can do a scaled drawing in:

  • ¼ = 1
  • ¾=3
  • 1=4

Heres how I think of it: each square on a piece of graph paper is ¼. So, every time you draw a ¼ on a piece of graph paper, you are drawing 1 in real life. The graph paper below has been enlarged for you to see what I mean.

Ill use a larger scale if I have a small space and find that a scale of ¼=1 is going to be to small of a visual.

Below, Ive drawn a scale. You can see the relationship between the top line and the bottom line . You can see that:

  • 0=0

The Importance Of Staying The Course

For interior design businesses, managing finances, business operations, and project schedules are highly interrelated tasks that require a comprehensive strategy to ensure future success. While you will likely have to adapt your plans over time, start your business with a standard set of procedures for meeting and exceeding legal requirements, keeping accurate financial records, and managing work and payment schedules for projects.

You cant do it alone.

Hire the right team of employees and consultants and implement the right support tools, like Design Manager, to ensure you can meet your own sky-high standards for excellence.

The future of your business depends on its reputation. Your designs are a part of that image, but the workings of the underlying business become part of that image, too. If a client has a bad experience because of billing mistakes or project management failures, they may not recommend your firm to others.

Invest Early On In Getting A Strong Concept

At some point as a designer, you will have to articulate your design decisions using reason and considered logic. If your justification for a concept or a feature component centres around It just looks so pretty, theres likely to be a problem with getting it across the line. If a strategy is devised and an understanding of the message cultivated from the outset, this not only helps with the direction of the design as it evolves, but gives the client something to buy into and to measure against the brief. The concept you formulate will obviously be dependent on that brief, and focused on answering the requirements presented within it, but your approach to the concept can take an unexpected route to accomplishing this as long as you can justify why. A key factor for a strong concept is being in direct and close contact with the clients at all phases of a given project, Alia states. Whether this is during the preliminary design stages or during construction, up until completion and delivery, keeping the client involved and engaged in these different phases allows a smooth transition between them, with no surprises upon completion And thats one way of keeping clients happy!
