How Much To Charge For Interior Decorating

A General Estimate Of Time

How to charge for an Interior Design Project! $$$

So after 15 years of experience in the field working with clients daily, I have taken the time to basically figure out a way to estimate what design fees will generally amount to in residential design projects when the billing is hourly.

Essentially, I have noted that the total cost of designer fees on a job from beginning to end will total approximately 5% of the entire cost of the job as estimated by the contractor. So when doing your pre-renovation budget use the total renovation estimate and take 5% of this total for a number to install in the design fees budget line. Remember, this is just an estimate, but at least it gives you a reasonable base-level expectation of cost.

For example if your contractor looks at your main floor and concludes that to fully gut it, add new lighting, a new kitchen, new flooring etc, will cost approximately $150 000, you can estimate the design fees to add up to be around $7500, including onsite visits, CAD drawings, colour and material selection, furniture layouts etc. This does not include the other materials that designers offer such as window coverings, furniture and accessories. These are usually additional costs added on top of renovation costs.

Brainstorm A Business Name

Your business name is your business identity, so choose one that encapsulates your objectives, services, and mission in just a few words. You probably want a name thats short and easy to remember, since much of your business, and your initial business in particular, will come from word-of-mouth referrals.

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • The name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around family, friends, colleagues, social media for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as interior design or home design, boosts SEO
  • Choose a name that allows for expansion: Jims Bakery over Jims Cookies
  • Avoid location-based names that might hinder future expansion
  • Use online tools like the Step by Step business name generator

Once youve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names at a web cataloging site such as NameChk. Using .com or .org sharply increases credibility, so its best to focus on these.

Drawing Up Agreements For Interior Design Services

With all this said and done, when charges have been ascertained and agreed upon, it is now time to have a formal written and signed agreement outlining the intent of all parties involved and this will serve as a guide for the conduct of the business between both parties – the client and the certified interior designer.

It is always better and more acceptable for the certified interior designer to draw up the agreement and then the client may decide to give it a lawyer to go through and advice.

If all seems well and both parties -the client and the certified interior designer – are pleased and satisfied, the contract can now be signed and sealed, and subsequently delivered.

Are Interior Design Fees Really That Expensive

It is, and it isnt. First, its worth mentioning that most designers offer a range of services that can set you on the right track if full service design isnt right for you.

However, if you are ready to invest in your home, interior design could save you money in the long run. Ill use the same analogy I shared in my last post, because its a good one

Interior design is a professional service, similar to hiring an attorney or an accountant. You could certainly defend yourself in court or do your own taxes, but the chances of success are 100x better if you hire a professional to ensure the best outcome.

I cant tell you how many times I walk into a home and find furnishings that dont fit properly, are scaled incorrectly, or create a lack of cohesion in the home. These furnishings often get consigned or donated when the homeowner realizes the potential of the room when designed properly.

These are costly mistakes that could otherwise have been invested in a design professional to get it right the first time and to get that finished look very few people can do on their own.

A Book Every Interior Designer Will Find Helpful

I found this book of tremendous help, and you may find it beneficial too. It is written by a veteran designer who is an expert on estimating, pricing, and budgeting systems in the design industry.

Its step-by-step instructions that include case studies and interviews with other professionals have helped designers and professional interior decorators establish prices and budgets that will not only make their clients pleased but also ensure their own businesses are run profitably.

Fee For Interior Design Consultation

Most interior designers charge a fee of $50 to $250 for an initial consultation, which usually includes an hour of the designers time. This hour will include questions about your preferences, likes and dislikes, and budget. Following the consultation, the designer will compile design ideas for each room.

Is Hiring An Interior Designer Worth It

This depends entirely on you, your goals, and your home. For some people, hiring a designer means that they get a perfectly put together home that is tailor-made for their family all at once, which is worth it to them. Other people may not care as much about whether the space has that finished, pulled-together look, so for them, hiring a designer may be an expense they cannot justify.

Hiring an online design service, virtual design service, or doing a day service can help split the difference. You get advice on what will work while doing the majority of it yourself to save money. Only you can determine if these costs are worth it.

How To Save Money On Interior Design Costs:

Interior Design Consultation – How much should you charge?

Its possible to renovate your home on a shoestring, here are some handy tips on how to do so:

  • Revamp old furniture – your sofa or table might be looking a bit worse for wear but that doesnt mean you have to spend lots of money replacing it with something brand new. Sometimes all it takes is a lick of paint on some wooden furniture or some new covers to spruce up your sofa. If you cant visualise this, ask your interior designer for some style inspiration.

  • Shop smart – If youre willing to shop around and do some digging, you can get some beautiful interior items in charity shops or websites selling second-hand items like Gumtree or Facebook marketplace.

  • Choose your colours wisely – While it may seem tempting to opt for vibrant, out-there colours, you could quickly tire of having them in your home every day and could end up spending more money on repainting in a few months time. If you want to stick with current colour trends, remember these go out of fashion pretty quickly too, so it’s best going for a timeless, classic colour you wont get bored of.

How Do Interior Designers Get Paid

Interior designers will set up a contract with you itemizing everything they will do, and it will include how and when they want to be paid and how long you can expect the project to take. They will generally want to receive a downpayment or retainer of 10% to 50% at the time you sign the contract.

The majority of interior designers will invoice you online, and you can pay through one of the many online payment apps available.

Be aware of what professionals call scope creep.

Scope creep … in project management refers to changes, continuous or uncontrolled growth in a projects scope, at any point after the project begins. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlledWikipedia

To stay within your budget, make sure all your decisions are set in stone before work begins, as every change in the design plan will cause the designer to have to charge you more.

Hiring A Decorator Or A Designer

If you only need an expert to help you decorate your space, the total cost youll spend will likely be cheaper than hiring a designer who will also help you make structural changes to your space. And if you’re remodeling a room that requires structural changes, your design costs will likely be higher than decorator costs.

Interior Designer Vs Decorator

How Much Does Interior Design Cost?

You may hear the terms interior designer and decorator used interchangeably. These are two different professions, despite some degree of crossover.

An interior designer has experience in the construction industry. They understand space planning and layout and often work with architects and builders when designing spaces. They can also furnish and decorate a space when it is complete.

On the other hand, Interior decorators only furnish and decorate spaces. They do not offer drawings, space planning, or project management services. They only begin work once the home is built.

Interior decorators usually charge by the hour, although some charge by the room. Most people pay between $3,500 and $5,000 on average for projects involving a decorator. The decorators hourly rate is between $50 and $200 for most decorators and up to $500 an hour for some luxury decorators. These rates are usually inclusive. Like designers, some decorators offer a consultation at the start of their services. This is in addition to their hourly rate and usually runs between $150 and $250.

Flat Interior Design Rate

Based on your project size and needs, some interior designers would quote a flat fee for their services. The contract and interior designer quote would clearly list what would be included for this fee, along with how many revisions are available and the contracts expiration date . Interior decorator costs are often based on the flat rate structure because its easier to estimate the work involved when there are no architectural needs.

    Interior Designer Rate Per Day

You can expect to pay between $600 and $1,200 on average for the day. However, some designers charge up to $2,000 for very involved consultations. Many designers now offer day rates, which means that you can hire a designer for up to 8 hours, with the occasional phone call consultation later as needed. This gives you the expertise of the designer at a much lower rate because you will do the project management, driving, ordering, and placement of furnishings yourself. Not all designers offer this service. Most high-end firms require you to purchase full-scale design services, but for smaller firms and freelance designers, this can be an option.

Tips When Hiring An Interior Designer

Before hiring someone as your interior designer, it is important to let them know your budget and how much square footage you want to redesign. You should also discuss the project scope, such as if the expected design will change many elements in the room or if it’s more superficial. To help you get the most out of these initial discussions and find the right interior designer, make sure to bring a list of questions to your first meeting, as well as a budget estimate and an inspiration board. By providing color swatches, artwork, and furniture you like already, the designer can give you a better idea of how much it will cost and how long it will take.

Also, when hiring an interior design professional, think about your current furniture and design elements and what you want to keep or swap. This is a good opportunity to consider sustainability and safety with organic and family-friendly elements, such as items that are safe for children, pets, and people with disabilities. You should also try to clear as much clutter as possible so you have a clean, tidy space to work with and make sure the professional agrees to finalize plans before any work begins. Dont forget to discuss their approach to changes, as well as any portfolio or license questions. Read reviews from other homeowners, but keep in mind they are subjective. You should feel comfortable and confident in the designers abilities and professionalism.

Advice For Choosing An Interior Designer

The one and only piece of advice I can give to anyone looking to work 1-on-1 with an interior designer is to hire somebody who has demonstrated on their website or social channels that they design in a decor style youd like in your home.

For example, if you love the Modern Country, timeless, elegant look you, then wed be a great fit to work together . If you know you want a modern, contemporary style, I would recommend other interior designers who specialise in this area.

Image: modern country design, border oak

Why is this important? The designer is going to be a specialist in that niche and if theyre a specialist theyll know all the suppliers, all the best colour schemes, the most ideal materials for your budget inside out.

As I specialise in timeless, country, or modern farmhouse I know all the suppliers, materials and Ive seen colour schemes being developed + translated in real life in this style. Yes, I can do contemporary, industrial and other designs too, but it wouldnt come as easily to me as the country/timeless look and Id rather recommend a designer who can deliver exactly what you need.
