Reviewing The Interior Decorators Work

How Much Does An Interior Designer Cost To Hire?

As part of working with the interior decorator, you will review her concept for decorating the home, and you may be asked to review progress thats made along the way. The process of installation is the point where the interior decorators ideas are brought to reality. This can be a really fun process to monitor in seeing how a room that may once have seemed drab will get a special decorators touch with attention to detail and practicality.

What if youre not happy with the decorators work after the fact? Whether you can ask for additional work without making an additional payment should be clearly established in your original contract and agreement. Some interior decorators will strive to make you happy, so they may have already allotted for a certain amount of changes to the décor after their initial work. Others may ask questions along the way but refuse to make any changes once the installation has been completed.

Fee Based On Square Footage

Another popular structure for interior decorator fees is to charge a set rate per square foot of interior space. This is more common in new construction projects where a designer is selecting the initial hardware, flooring, fixtures, cabinetry, and wall finishes. Although fees based on square footage fluctuate by location, it generally starts around one dollar per square foot and goes up from there.

Hidden Costs To Be Aware Of

There are quite a few costs that might not be in your initial quote received from the Interior Designer.

This would be one of the reasons that it is SO important to read your contract to see what other charges can be added as the project progresses.

In defense of the Interior Designer, it would be near impossible to foresee some of the extra costs that could arise, like unexpected delays due to weather, errors, vendor vacations, etc.

  • Shipping Cost depends on the weight of the item, and distance it needs to travel
  • Storage Most designers buy all items needed to complete the project, which means they will need to store it in a secure, weatherproof warehouse
  • Insurance Insurance for the warehousing, and on expensive items
  • Extra Insurance You will need extra coverage insurance for all furnishings and materials during handling and moving, storage and installation Make sure your Interior Design also has Coverage Insurance
  • Unexpected labor Especially when remodeling your home/room/kitchen, etc.
  • Expected labor Certain jobs might take longer than anticipated like with restorations items
  • Minimum Fees Some items have a Minimum Order quantity from the wholesaler e.g. material for upholstering
  • Over-time Overtime will be charged when you want to hurry the job on to complete quicker, which means that all labor will continue beyond normal working hours

    How Are Designer Charges Computed

If you think that designers usually take a lump sum amount for a design, thats not always the case. The interior design price list is computed in different ways.

    • Per Sqft: Based on the area of the home, the designer charges around 10 per sqft and this can go upto 100 as well, if youre looking for design alone. However, inclusive of products, carpentry i.e, modular kitchen and wardrobes, flooring and ceiling, this price can shoot upto 2,000 3,000 too. It is better to check with the designer on what it includes as some of them only offer woodwork or some exclude soft furnishings like curtains, blinds and so on.
    • Percentage of Overall Cost: The designer calculates the overall price of the project inclusive of products and services. Based on the total cost, they will charge around 6%-15% as a design fee. This can shoot upto 20% based on the level of design and expertise involved.
    • : In layman terms, this means the designer will charge a premium on every product you buy. Eg: If your sofas cost price is around 20,000, the designer may mark it as 22,000 while charging it to the project. The premium varies from project to project.
    • A Lump Sum: This is purely based on the designers discretion on how much they want to charge for a project. It can be based on a percentage, commission, per sqft or a combination of two or more categories. In many cases, the designers call this a fee and there is no transparency on what basis this is charged.

Keeping Interior Design Costs To A Minimum

How Much Does It Cost For Interior Designer

Were all entitled to a beautiful home, regardless of costs! Read on for our top tips for keeping costs down:

    • Revamp old furniture – your sofa or table might be looking a bit worse for wear but that doesnt mean you have to spend lots of money replacing it with something brand new. Sometimes all it takes is a lick of paint on some wooden furniture or some new covers to spruce up your sofa. If you cant visualize this, ask your interior designer for some style inspiration.

    • Shop smart – If youre willing to shop around and do some digging, you can get some beautiful interior items in charity shops or websites selling second-hand items like Facebook marketplace.

    • Choose your colours wisely – While it may seem tempting to opt for vibrant, out-there colours, you could quickly tire of having them in your home every day and could end up spending more money on repainting in a few months. If you want to stick with current colour trends, remember these go out of fashion pretty quickly too, so it’s best to go for a timeless, classic colour you wont get bored of.

Interior Designer Price By Billing Method

Interior designers charge for their services in various ways. Most new designers begin with an hourly rate, while more seasoned designers charge by the square foot or have a flat fee. Some designers set a minimum fee for design services or use flat fees for each service. Designing a room costs $500 to $10,000, depending on the room. There is a push for more designers to be transparent in their pricing. If your designer has a flat-fee schedule, this will likely detail which services they provide for the fee. For big projects, such as the interior design of an entire house under construction, expect to pay a percentage based on the total project costs.

    Hiring A Home Decorator

    Is an Interior Decorator Affordable?

Maybe its time to refresh that outdated decor. Or perhaps youre moving into a new home and craving a fresh look. If youre like most homeowners, you know your own taste but have trouble putting together a cohesive design plan.

Thats where an interior decorator is invaluable. A professional decorator can take your ideas and turn them into a beautiful, functional design. Theyll find colors and patterns that work together, furniture that fits the space, lighting to set the right mood, decorative and accent pieces for style – and so much more.

The cost of hiring an interior decorator varies tremendously based on the size and scope of the job, your budget, the designers rates and your location. The good news is, youre in charge of how much you spend. You can spend just a few hundred dollars for several hours of design advice, or you can spend tens of thousands for a designer to manage the process from start to finish and do all of the buying on your behalf.

Designers have different methods of charging for their services. The most popular include:

Most designers require a retainer to begin work. This is an upfront payment that typically covers the cost of the designers planning time. Most designers will also require you to sign a contract agreeing to the scope of work.

    Interior Designer Cost Per Hour

How Much Does An Interior Designer Cost?

Charging per hour for the designers time is the most common method, particularly for smaller companies or designers who work independently. This is especially common for smaller projects. When a designer bills for their time, they bill for all of their time, including travel, site visits, correspondence and any coordination they do. The average hourly rate is in the $100 to $200 per hourrange, but it depends on a designers experience level.

For example, if there are several designers working on your project, a junior level designers time may be billed at $50 per hour while the principal designers time can be billed anywhere from $200 to $500 per hour. In the case of small firms or freelance designers who work alone, expect to pay within the $100 to $200 per hourrange.

In most cases, the hourly rate for a designer covers their design and coordination services only. Furniture and material purchases are typically billed separately on an invoice along with any markup included for coordinating. Other fees such as coordination fees or special rates for travel time, etc. will be billed this way as well.

Interior Design Tips: How Much Does Hiring an Interior Decorator or Designer Cost?

Interior decorators will generally base their quote on the size and scope of your project.

For this they will generally charge you an hourly rate or an overall design fee, based on the amount of time they estimate theyll work on your job.

The cost of hiring an interior decorator depends on your budget. If you only have a few thousand dollars to spend, your designer will work to that budget and source products and materials to suit. Of course, if you have the luxury of splashing out on new furniture and accessories for every room, youll find you can easily spend many thousands of dollars.

Some interior decorators offer a free initial consultation, so you can see if youd like to work together before signing on the dotted line. Otherwise all their services are chargeable. Expect an experienced decorator to charge anywhere from:

    • $200 to $300 for an initial consultation
    • $150 to $200 per hour for sourcing, selection, purchase and installation of furniture, lighting, soft furnishings and window treatments
    • $150 to $200 per hour for selecting paint schemes, flooring and other hard finishes

They key is to identify how much work is involved and how long they need to make an impact on your home.

When And How Do I Pay My Interior Designer

Most designers will require a deposit at the beginning of a project, typically 10% although with smaller projects it is sometimes higher. After that, you will pay the remainder in installments which are outlined in the contract and are usually based on project milestones. Keep in mind that designers will sometimes request a 50% payment upfront on all furniture purchases as well.

Possible Design Service Investments By Project

    Design Consulting

From a design consulting perspective, you could get some great direction in a single design consultation that runs anywhere from $300-$600, give or take.

Some designers also offer larger blocks of design time, such as Designer for a Day. This is where you work side-by-side with a designer for a full day, making decisions and selections together, and then you manage the design implementation on your own. This is a great option if you need more than a single consultation but full service design is out of your budget.

Note: If a designer does not charge for their consultation be wary about what youll receive. They are not likely to be forthcoming with ideas and tend to be tight-lipped until theyre under contract with you.

Although a stand-alone consultation is not a service we currently offer, all our full service design projects do start off with a consultation as the jumping off point. You can read here for more about our current design offerings.

    Full Service Design: Rooms

From a full service design perspective, the cost of a professional designer usually runs at thousands of dollars per room again, depending on whats involved.

For spaces that dont have much construction and consist mostly of furniture, drapery, and artwork selections, the full service design fees typically range from $5,000 $10,000.

Larger rooms requiring a lot of furniture will take longer to design and therefore have a higher fee.
