Enter professional interior designers. Not only is an interior designer trained on the ins and outs of design styles, they are intimately familiar with color theory, virtual design, and project management.
When youre on the hunt for the right interior designer, there are a number of factors to consider before you make a decision. Which styles do they specialize in? What is the lead time for a project? Do they have connections with furniture companies?
These questions are all important, but we are willing to bet the biggest question you have is How much does an interior designer cost?. After all, an interior design can only go as far as your wallet can. However, many people forget that when you hire an interior designer, youre not paying for throw pillows and paint swatches. An interior designer is worth much more than their price tag.
How To Charge Clients For Interior Decorating Services
Now that weve gone over some of the basics, lets talk about how to actually charge clients for your interior decorating services.
As we mentioned before, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It really depends on your unique business model and what youre comfortable with. With that in mind, lets take a look at some of the most popular ways interior decorators tend to charge for their services
Drawing Up Agreements For Interior Design Services
With all this said and done, when charges have been ascertained and agreed upon, it is now time to have a formal written and signed agreement outlining the intent of all parties involved and this will serve as a guide for the conduct of the business between both parties – the client and the certified interior designer.
It is always better and more acceptable for the certified interior designer to draw up the agreement and then the client may decide to give it a lawyer to go through and advice.
If all seems well and both parties -the client and the certified interior designer – are pleased and satisfied, the contract can now be signed and sealed, and subsequently delivered.

What To Expect During The Interior Design Process
Professionals all have their unique process when working with clients. But, generally, heres what you can expect:
1. Consultation
The first step will be your consultation. This initial meeting should take place in the space your designer will be working on. This allows both you and the designer to look at the space together and discuss your vision and their ideas. They will get an idea of the scope of work, the size of the area and what youre looking for in the design. You can also discuss their fees, your budget and ideal timelines.
2. Design plans
The designer will then work with you to figure out the full design. They will factor in the purpose of the room, the needs of your family and the layout of the building itself. And they will likely put together a design board, drawings, floor plans, shopping lists and more.
3. Work begins
The appropriate outside contractors will be hired, and the designer will help manage them by keeping them on budget and on track. The designer can keep you involved in the process of picking out exactly which finishes, furniture and decor you want. Or, if you have granted them the freedom, they can acquire all the needed products and purchase without needing to contact you.
They will be on-site regularly to monitor the jobs progress and check on any outside contractors work. They will coordinate orders, shipments and installation.
After all the contractors have completed their work, the professional will complete the final decorating.
A Little Professional Input Can Go A Long Way
Some interior designers charge by an hourly rate but, more commonly, they are offering packages to suit different budgets and needs of homeowners. Even a few hours from an interior designer can make a huge difference they can help drive you in the right direction, finding affordable yet super stylish solutions to suit your budget and taste.

Tips For Finding The Right Interior Designer For You
The most important thing to do before you hire an interior designer is to understand your scope and budget. Make a list of everything you want for your space and take time to prioritize your list of needs and wants. Try to narrow down your taste as well. Many styles can look good in a space, but they often dont look good together.
In general, the more time you spend narrowing things down beforehand, the less time a designer has to spend narrowing it down for you. Narrowing down your taste can also help you find designers that suit your style as well as your budget. Although most designers are capable of working within a variety of styles, youll find that everyone has their niche.
The most important part of hiring a designer is finding someone who matches your personality and communication style. You will likely spend a lot of time with this person. Make sure you feel comfortable around them and can communicate your desires and needs clearly.
How Is A Designfee Determined
I cant speak for all designers, but having designer friends throughout the country, I can say that most develop their fees based on some sort of criteria, or at least they should!
Some do it based on the square footage of the home , some do it based on a fee schedule by room, some even do it based on the percentage of your furnishings investment. Others set our design fee based on the estimated number of design hours anticipated for the project.
Because each project is so unique, weve found this to be the only way to determine an appropriate fee. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes. Believe it or not, only 20% is picking the pretty things. The other 80% goes toward technical drawings, project management, and behind-the-scenes tasks.
Okay, so by now youre probably saying, Thats great, Janelle, but what does it actually cost to hire an interior designer?
Lol. The short answer is that it depends. It depends on
Now that youve seen the million variables that impact the design fee, lets talk numbers.

Another Way To Charge By The Hour
Another option is to charge a higher hourly rate for the first few hours of work, followed by a lower rate for every hour after that. This is a great way to incentivize your clients to book more hours. For example, you could charge $100 per hour for the first 4 hours and then $50 per hour for every hour after that.
The key is to find a pricing model that works for you and your business. Experiment with different hourly rates and see what gives you the best results.
Billing For Initial Consultations
Maintain your efforts if youre just starting out as an interior designer and youre offering free initial consultations as a means of attracting additional clients. Once youve completed a few tasks, its time to move on from the freebies and invest in your own time and effort. Initial consultations often take approximately an hour, and if they are conducted at the clients residence, it is likely that they are attempting to obtain free advice. So why not charge for your services if youre going to the trouble of visiting your clients home and providing them with recommendations regarding their impending project?

Interior Designer Salary: How To Make More Money As A Designer
According to the United States Department of Labor, the average annual compensation for an interior designer is $49,810, which equates to around $24 per hour. Salary levels differ from state to state, with the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and New York ranked among the top three highest paid states in the US for this career, respectively. Of course, just as with any other career, the income of an interior designer is determined by a variety of factors, including education, certification, years of experience, and aptitude in the field.
a) Hire additional people.
A General Estimate Of Time

So after 15 years of experience in the field working with clients daily, I have taken the time to basically figure out a way to estimate what design fees will generally amount to in residential design projects when the billing is hourly.
Essentially, I have noted that the total cost of designer fees on a job from beginning to end will total approximately 5% of the entire cost of the job as estimated by the contractor. So when doing your pre-renovation budget use the total renovation estimate and take 5% of this total for a number to install in the design fees budget line. Remember, this is just an estimate, but at least it gives you a reasonable base-level expectation of cost.
For example if your contractor looks at your main floor and concludes that to fully gut it, add new lighting, a new kitchen, new flooring etc, will cost approximately $150 000, you can estimate the design fees to add up to be around $7500, including onsite visits, CAD drawings, colour and material selection, furniture layouts etc. This does not include the other materials that designers offer such as window coverings, furniture and accessories. These are usually additional costs added on top of renovation costs.

How To Save Money On Interior Design And Decorating Services
Prices can quickly add up when youre working on your homes interior with a designer or decorator. If youre on a tight budget, use these tips:
Inquire about discounts. Some interior design businesses might offer a discounted rate if you ask. Many retailers give discounts to designers so they can get you better prices on furniture and other furnishings.
Ask about affordable furnishings and materials. Interior designers have the knowledge and experience to know when buying a low-cost table will look just as good as a high-cost one.
Ask designers to reuse or repurpose items you already own. This could save you money on buying new furniture, for example.
Stick to the design plan. Make a design plan with interior designers at the start of the project and stick to it. Avoid making too many changes. Delays cause more work for everyone which means your cost can increase, especially if youre paying an hourly rate.
Part of the designers job is to stay within your budget, so be honest and reasonable with them about what you can afford. Remember that you’re paying them for their time, so try not to waste it by changing your mind.

Tips When Hiring An Interior Designer
Before hiring someone as your interior designer, it is important to let them know your budget and how much square footage you want to redesign. You should also discuss the project scope, such as if the expected design will change many elements in the room or if it’s more superficial. To help you get the most out of these initial discussions and find the right interior designer, make sure to bring a list of questions to your first meeting, as well as a budget estimate and an inspiration board. By providing color swatches, artwork, and furniture you like already, the designer can give you a better idea of how much it will cost and how long it will take.
Also, when hiring an interior design professional, think about your current furniture and design elements and what you want to keep or swap. This is a good opportunity to consider sustainability and safety with organic and family-friendly elements, such as items that are safe for children, pets, and people with disabilities. You should also try to clear as much clutter as possible so you have a clean, tidy space to work with and make sure the professional agrees to finalize plans before any work begins. Dont forget to discuss their approach to changes, as well as any portfolio or license questions. Read reviews from other homeowners, but keep in mind they are subjective. You should feel comfortable and confident in the designers abilities and professionalism.
R/terior Studios Fee Structure
Personally, I have always hated hourly fees for any service, especially when I have no idea how many hours it can take to complete the job. The stress of opening the bill and seeing the hours always increases my anxiety. So, when starting my business, I figured that if I did not like being on the receiving end of an unknown hourly bill each month, why would I run my business that way?!
Plus, to be fair, I hate tracking my own time and hours as well. Maybe it is a creative person thing, but tracking the number of hours it takes to find that one gorgeous rug or lamp that literally pulls the entire design together is just not something I believe in. If I want to be true to my craft and fully authentic to my design, I will spend all the time I need to find that ONE piece for my client. And that is on me, not them.
Design is also so organic for me that I find it difficult to track my time and charge hourly. Since Im always working on multiple projects at a time, I may get an idea for one project while I am sourcing something for another and decide to include it and then come back to the first one. See how that makes things complicated?!
So, when youre ready to hire my team to transform your space and change your life, lets chat. All I ask is you TRUST in me and my choices and believe as strongly as I do that the end result will be a home you absolutely LOVE!
What are you waiting for? Lets tell your story together!
Cheers,
