Wall Panels And Ceiling Tiles For Home Theatres

Home Theater – Part 7: Acoustic Paneling and Wall Covers

Nothing beats a personalized home theatre. No other room can provide you with the same level of comfort and still deliver the unbeatable viewing experience offered by a massive screen and a full surround system. If you have a home theatre in your house and youre looking for ways to decorate and personalize the space, youve come to the right place. Weve prepared a handy dandy list of tips and pointers on how to decorate your home theatre with wall panels and ceiling tiles.

Where To Place Sound Absorbing Panels

The purpose of the room often determines the location of sound-absorbing panels. In my post Where to Place Acoustic Panels I explain that the best location depends on the reflection points and the height of the listeners ear. Sound that travels directly from the sound source to the listener or monitor arrives first, but it is followed within nanoseconds by reflected sound waves that deflect off the floor, ceiling, and walls.

The first reflections arrive so quickly that they muddy or compromise the initial sound wave, making it difficult to hear clearly. To locate the primary reflection points, sit or stand where you normally would and have a helper move a mirror along the four walls and ceiling. Place a mark on the surface where you begin to see the sound source reflection from your listening post, and then where the reflection disappears. The area between the marks is the first reflection point and should be acoustically treated.

For larger gathering areas like living, meeting, and party rooms, place the panels along the walls in a symmetrical pattern at the height of the listener. Center panels between 3 and 4 off the floor for those seated, 5 t0 6 if using bar stools, and 6 to 7 for standing. Alternate the pattern on opposing walls to catch more reflected waves to further dampen and deaden reverberation and echo. Acoustic ceiling tiles or clouds in the reflection point will further improve the sound clarity.

4. Cut the batting into squares the same size as the MDF squares.

What Are Decorative Acoustic Panels

Acoustic panels dont need to look industrial or utilitarian. The panels should complement the décor, lend color and texture, brighten or liven up drab walls, and reflect the personality or aesthetics of the occupants. Decorative acoustic panels do all that, plus they control reverb, flutter, and echo for a cleaner and clearer sound.

Artistic panels may form an interlocking pattern of shapes and colors. Create ripples or waves, have horizontal, vertical, or diagonal lines, or be any 2 or 3D geometric shape. Different shapes and thicknesses can be mixed and arranged to suit any artistic flair while improving sound control too. Decorative panels can be used on walls, ceilings, and floors for full sound control coverage.

Panels may be framed or frameless, have an acoustic core of foam or mineral wool, and commonly are wrapped in fire-resistant fabrics. Colors and images usually are of UV-resistant inks or dyes to resist fading and retain their vibrant colors much longer. Whether mounted on walls or suspended from ceilings, they are designed to absorb or diffuse sound waves to control reverb, flutter, and echo.

Priority 6 Reflection Points On The Ceiling

nice New Acoustic Wall Panels , home theater acoustic room ...

Placing sound absorbing panels on the ceiling will definitely help. I have prioritized this a bit lower because the speakers are farther from the ceiling as compared to the walls and the floor.

Strategically place two panels on the ceiling that will cover the reflection points of the center and front speakers.

Acoustic panels required so far 12 sound absorption panels and 8 bass traps.

What Do Bass Traps Do

DIY Home Theater faux-wall construction (Part 10)

While acoustic panels are used to absorb harsher sounds of mid-range and high frequencies, bass traps are made for low frequency sound muffling, such as bass drums, thunder, or other deep, low sounds. These kinds of sounds are widely used in horror and thriller films as they create a rather unsettling noise which adds to the eeriness or tension of a scene.

Failing to install panels specifically for this type of sound can create a lot of reverberation and make it difficult to hear noises other than the bass.

For instance, if you have been in a car with the bass turned all the way on, your ears may experience a bit of ringing as the bass vibrates at a low, loud frequency. This can create an unpleasant listening experience as the other sounds are completely muffled compared to the loud bass.

While acoustic panels are typically made from foam or other fibers, bass traps are comprised of cotton denim which is highly absorbent. This helps to diminish the reverberation that occurs when low-frequency sounds are played at a high volume.

Bass traps are typically about three inches thick, which helps to absorb much of the extra noise so that only a true, clear sound reverberates back.

It is generally best to use a combination of both types of panels in a home theater to create the best acoustics for an optimal viewing experience.

You will need to worry about the first reflection points of your center and front speakers from which most of the music and dialogue play out. That makes it three sound absorbing panels of two inches thickness for each side wall amounting to a total of six.

The surrounds can be ignored as they are mostly for ambient sounds in a movie.

A Guide To Home Theater Acoustic Panels

Home theater acoustic panels are the unsung heroes of any good movie-watching setup.

Having a home theater can be a great bonding experience for families and provide endless hours of entertainment. Further, it can help to increase the value of your home and it is most certainly an attractive feature for future buyers!

There is a lot of work that goes into creating a good home theater space. Obviously, the TV or projection system is a major component, along with choosing the right type of seats, proper theater lighting, and, of course, the right speaker system.

But there is one aspect of a home theater that is incredibly important and must be carefully fine-tuned: the acoustics of the room. The quality of the sound as well as the acoustics of the room matter a lot.

When creating a home theater system, many people simply focus on the speakers. While having a great surround sound system is a key aspect, too much sound can actually create a terrible experience.

Since home theaters are often quite small , sound waves bounce around and can actually create a reverberation or echo, which results in a muddy, unclear sound.

This is where home theater acoustic panels can provide a solution.

Lets dive in.

How To Find The Reflection Points

100 3D wall panels – Home interior wall decorating ideas 2020

Finding the reflection points for the five speakers is pretty easy. All you need is a small mirror, some masking tape and a family member or friend to assist you. The detailed procedure has been explained in detail here.

Have your family member or friend hold the mirror against the wall and move across till you see the reflection of the speaker. That is the reflection point for that particular speaker on that particular wall. Do this for all surfaces for each speaker and mark all the reflection points with masking tape. These are the points which need to be covered by sound absorption panels.

The Number Of Acoustic Panels That I Would Recommend

Personally, I would go up to Priority 5 and that is what I have implemented in my home theater room.

I left out the ceiling, not due to budget constraints but only because it is such a pain to fix them up on the ceiling. Moreover, you need to be doubly sure that they are securely fixed and there is no risk of them falling.

If you go for a similar set up such as mine, you will need 10 sound absorption panels and 8 bass traps. That makes a total of 18 acoustic panels.

You can reduce the number of bass traps in the corners if you need to. However, ensure that some portions of the corners are covered with the highest priority given to the tri-corners.

Thickness Of Bass Traps

SoundSuede⢠Acoustic Panel

On the contrary, controlling low-frequency sound reflections in a room by any means is not an easy task. In fact, it is virtually impossible to treat a room for very low frequencies.

The reason for this can be best understood by the relationship between frequency and wavelength.

Wavelength is inversely proportional to frequency which implies that lower frequency sound waves will have longer wavelengths. Longer the wavelength, thicker the bass trap required to prevent reflections.

Hence, bass traps have to be more than four inches thick.

Dimensions of each acoustic panel would be approximately 48 x 24. The thickness, as mentioned, would be two inches for sound absorption panels and four inches or more for bass traps.

Things To Consider Before Buying Modern Acoustic Panels

1-2 paragraphs on each There are many things to consider before buying modern acoustic panels. Although color, shape, and design are important to the visual effect of the panels, there are more important acoustical elements to look for first. What the acoustic device is made of, its NRC rating, construction, size, orientation, location, and installation are factors that determine the effectiveness of the device and should be considered along with or before the aesthetic elements. You want it to not only look good but to control disruptive noise elements.
