Lifeproof Vinyl Flooring Vs Proximity Mills
Proximity Mills is one of the most popular flooring brands in the countryand for good reason. The companys products are similarly-priced to LifeProofs, but with better warranties, thicker wear layers, and a much better buying experience .
Plus, Proximity Mills is ethically-sourced and fully recyclable. So if youre looking for a floor in this price range, wed recommend going with a brand like Proximity Mills instead.
Home Decorators Collection Vinyl Plank Pros
- Price The various Home Decorators Vinyl Lines cost around $2 per square foot on average, therefore they are some of the most affordable options of luxury vinyl flooring on the market.
- Good Wear Layer thickness some of the Home Decorators Collection lines have a 20 MIL wear layer which is pretty good in LVP standards. Additionally, these are also quite cheap starting at only $2.39 per square foot.
- Waterproof The brands vinyl planks are 100% waterproof meaning they can be installed in all areas of the house including bathrooms, toilets and kitchens. However we wouldnt recommend putting Vinyl Planks down in walk-in showers where they receive constant water, better to go with tiles for that option.
- Underlay Home Decorators Collection Vinyl Planks come with a pre-attached underlayment meaning you dont have to spend extra bucks for that as with laminate flooring.
- Good Online Reviews The Home Decorators Collection has over 2800 reviews on the Home Depot website. These average 4 out of 5 stars.

Why Cali Vinyl Legends

The main reason we chose this line as our second best is the overall structure and style. First of all Cali Vinyl Legends is 12mm thick which is the second-best thickness we have analyzed, equal to Shaw Floorte Plus. Their other lines such as their Cali Vinyl Longboards are also relatively thick measuring 8mm overall. This accompanied by the Bamboo-Vinyl WPC Composite Core makes these vinyl planks very strong and long-lasting.
Another key reason is the overall style. Unlike some other vinyl plank brands, Cali Bamboo Vinyl looks very similar to real hardwood. The line comes in extra-long sizes to mimic the look of long hardwood planks even more. We do recommend Cali Bamboo Legends if you are looking for Durability and Style no matter what the price is. Definitely a great choice for new Vinyl Plank Flooring.

Best Vinyl Plank Flooring Reviews Criteria
To begin my search, I created a list of flooring brands and lines I was interested in researching. Here were my requirements:
- Easy to install.
- $3 or less per square foot.
- Can be laid on a concrete slab.
- Excellent reviewshow does it hold up?
- Available for me to buy myselfI didnt want to go through a distributor. I wanted to see large samples, bring them home, feel them, etc.
- Colorthe perfect gray-brown to tie in our existing coffee-colored flooring without looking like we were trying to match. Not too much color variation , and not too beach-y looking.
I quickly nixed some options due to my requirements. There are some really great higher end vinyl plank flooring brands that can cost upwards of over $5/sq ft.
Mannington, Karndean, Congoleum, Cali Bamboo, and some of the brands I looked at have higher-end vinyl plank lines. I looked at all of them, but most were out of my price range.
Lifeproof Vinyl Is Waterproofbut So Is Most Other Vinyl Plank
If youre looking for water-resistant wood flooring, a fake wood substitute like LifeProof is actually a great way to go. But, theres nothing about LifeProofs waterproof qualities that makes it better than any other waterproof option.
Even laminate flooring has waterproof choices nowadays, like Mohawks RevWood. Check out our vinyl plank vs. laminate guide if youre curious to see how they stack up.
LifeProof has better water-resistant properties than real wood, but otherwise, its pretty standard. If you want the best in waterproof flooring, check out some Pergo Extreme reviewsits super-popular for a reason.

Why Mohawk Solidtech Essentials
SolidTech Essentials is the cheapest of the SolidTech line, with an affordable price tag of around $2.05 2.70 per square foot. Thats a bargain price tag for a vinyl plank with a waterproof composite core and pre-attached underlayment. Although the Essentials planks are only 4.5mm thick, they have a decent 12mil wear layer and are known for their scratch resistance. Additionally, Mohawk SolidTech Essentials comes with a 25-year residential warranty. Its definitely an option worth considering if youre on a limited budget.
Why I Like Nucore Over Other Brands Of Lvp Flooring
Our floors do not have that sound when you walk across them, so I believe that each plank cork back is what makes the floor feel solid and makes no movement when you walk across them. It is quiet and feels comfy.
This is not the case in a room with another brand of vinyl planks that have no cork backing.
2. Slight wood grain texture on the planks the subtle sheen and layers of wood grain on the planks make them look and feel like real wood. It gives the wood a realistic rustic quality.
3. It truly is scratch-proof The flooring has wear layers that are pretty much scratch-proof even in high traffic areas. We have had our daughters pets a dog and cat stay with us over the years for extended periods of time. Their messes are easy to wipe clean and there are no scratch marks from their nails even in the rooms they stay in the most.
If I looked hard enough though, I am sure I would find small scratches somewhere on the flooring. They are hard to find since they are not white, but brown so they blend in with the floor.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring Review
After living with our new floors for a couple of weeks, Im sharing the pros and cons of choosing Luxury Vinyl Plank floors!
If you missed the beginning of the new flooring drama and why we had to have our engineered hardwood floors replaced, go read my post on picking out new flooring. It was not something I expected to have to juggle this summer, but its done and I have thoughts.
We had old reddish-brown engineered hardwood floors that had seen better days. They were rough when we moved in, so Ive had replace floors on my wish list since we moved in 7 years ago.
Even though I had always wanted new floors, I hadnt done any research into what flooring option I wanted to replace them. So I walked into this decision with no prior research and had to make a decision in a couple of weeks. It was overwhelming and I went to several flooring stores to see options and talk with professionals.
I went into the process thinking I would choose another engineered hardwood product. But then I started reading and hearing about luxury vinyl plank floors and I was intrigued. Waterproof, pet-proof & kid-proof are definitely qualities Id like in my home. While we dont have a pet, we do have a 4-year-old who plays with water all the time and likes to make science experiments in the kitchen when were not looking. Ha!

Who Makes Home Decorators Collection Vinyl Plank Flooring
Halstead New England is the manufacturer of Home Decorators Collection LVP. The company also produces LifeProof LVP for the Home Depot and Allure flooring too.
The fact that Halstead makes it exclusively for Home Depot reduces distribution cost and allows Home Depot to sell it at a very competitive price.
OK, lets look at the two lines
Lifeproof Vinyl Flooring Is Thin And Lightweight

Okay, so, this is a pro, but theres definitely a catch.
LifeProof flooring is thin and lightweight. This means its much easier to ship and installbut theres a general rule about flooring that more weight means more strength. Theres a reason the most durable wood flooring also tends to be the heaviest.
So, LifeProof vinyl flooring is sacrificing something for its light weightand well touch on that soon.

What Are The Most Popular Lifeproof Flooring Colors
Anyway, lets get to the fun stuff! LifeProof vinyl flooring comes in tons of wood floor designs and colors. If you want something like ebony flooring LifeProof might offer a decent substitute.
In fact, one of the best things about LifeProof flooring is the huge range of hardwood species it can look like. Were not just talking normal stuff like oak and hickorywere talking darkened and bleached wooden floor finishes that make for gorgeous contrasts.
So: if you want mixed-species wood floor patterns, you can totally achieve them with LifeProof vinyl.
Best Commercial Vinyl Plank Shaw Floorte Plus
Shaws Floorte Plus is a vinyl plank line specifically made for Commercial situations. It offers a supreme thickness of 12mm and a 30mil wear layer which is the best we have seen for Vinyl Planks. Additionally, Floorte Plus has a strong mineral core. All this makes Floorte Plus very durable and long-lasting.
Of course, there are two other brands that have similar thickness specifications such as Coretec or Cali Bamboo. However, Shaw beats both of these brands on warranty offering an industry-leading 20-year Commercial Warranty. This is why we chose this line as the Best Commercial Vinyl Plank.

Update: We Love Our Floors
Hi everyone! I get a decent number of messages about this post, so I wanted to pop back in and do an update. Which flooring did I choose? When I left this post in early 2019, I was just about to decided which flooring to put in our basement. I was down to the following:
- CoreLuxe EVP in Beach Cottage Oak
- LifeProof Luxury Vinyl Plank in Sterling Oak
- SMARTCORE Luxury Locking Vinyl in Cottage Oak
I do believe that all three of these would have been great options. However, we ultimately chose to go the Home Depot route and get LifeProof Luxury Vinyl Planks in Sterling Oak. Heres why we chose LifeProof flooring, as well as why we didnt choose CoreLuxe or SMARTCORE.
Vinyl Planks Can Be Hard To Repair
When I had Vinyl Planks in one of my rentals a water leak from an indoor washer dryer combo caused my LVP to warp. And the LVP were only installed a year prior but the flooring company said its too hard to repair only a portion so I had to replace the entire kitchen.
A disadvantage of a Vinyl Plank is repair, if you need to repair Vinyl Planks you sometimes need to replace an entire section of Vinyl Plank for it to look great again.

When you look at luxury vinyl plank flooring from a distance, brands and types may seem to blend together. Even the lowest quality luxury vinyl plank floor can put on a good show when you don’t examine it too carefully. But when you install the flooring, see it up close, touch it, and walk on it, the best types of vinyl plank flooring quickly rise to the top.
There are several main factors that differentiate better vinyl plank flooring from cheap flooring, such as thickness, core, wear layer, quality of register embossing, and the quality of the visual layer. Other points that help boost the quality of a brand or type of vinyl plank flooring include the size of the selection, the company’s reputation and its longevity, and the flooring warranty.
Coreluxe Vs Lifeproof Vs Smartcore
My CoreLuxe review in a nutshellit was beautiful, and it honestly felt the most substantial out of all three options. It had what appeared to be the best wear layer at 20 mil. However, it also required a separate moisture barrier, and the salespeople were really pushing an insulated underlayment as well.
This would have just been more things to add to my list to do, and it also would have pushed the price up over what i wanted to spend. Also, on a color note, I did think the color was just a hair too brown for what I was looking for, and I wasnt finding anything that I liked better there.
As for SMARTCORE, I loved the DIY approach of being able to really look at the planks and feel them. This one had a 5.5 mm thickness with a 12 mil wear layer, so less than the CoreLuxe, but more or equal to the LifeProof floors.
However, a big detractor for SMARTCORE for me was that the store associate said Id also need to buy an underlayment. Again, not a deal breaker, but something else Id have to do and something else Id have to factor in to my costs. So that left us with LifeProof.
The LifeProof luxury vinyl planks at Home Depot seemed very similar to the SMARTCORE planks . So the wear layer was a bit thinner.

Virtually All Vinyl Plank Can Be Installed As A Floating Floornot Just Lifeproof
As weve discussed before, one of LifeProofs big selling points is that its DIY-friendly because it can be installed in a floating style.
However, considering that most LifeProof flooring reviews mention how easy it is to break the interlocking clasps maybe its not really that DIY-friendly after all.
Why Choose Vinyl Plank Flooring For My Basement

First I want to cover why were going with vinyl plank floor for our basement. Some people still have the view that vinyl flooring is icky and ugly, but that simple isnt the case. It will be a huge step up from the gross carpet we have.
Here are my reasons:
- Cost. Its half the price of the engineered hardwoods we thought about trying to match. Its more than laminate, but
- Durability. Its waterproof. We have a kid and pets, and this space leads to the backyard, where we spend a lot of time. Its also tough and easy to clean.
- Ease of Installation. Most use an easy click-lock floating method and only require a few tools. Handy homeowners can handle installing it.
- Warmth. Were putting ours on a concrete slab, so Im not sure how much this will hold true, but Im positive it will be warmer than tile.
