Fmaaa Featuring Art From Nepal
FORT MADISON Fort Madison Area Art Association is featuring artwork from Nepal this month.
A reception for Watercolors by Sujan Tamang and artwork from his Nepalese students is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Swed Coffee will offer beverages. Holtkamps Floors, Decor & Furniture are the sponsors.
The local connection is Ernie Schiller of Donnellson, through Rebuild Nepal Education Foundation, formed by Schiller and the Pothitakis Family, namely Kara Pothitakis, so that their children could volunteer in the schools. The foundation helps support extremely poor schoolchildren in Nepal, so they can continue their schooling.
According to Schiller, who makes aid trips to Nepal, he met Sujan, an art teacher in Kathmandu, who also paints art for tourists, in 2019. With a total lockdown due to COVID-19 concerns in Nepal, and no school in session, teachers and school employees currently have no income.
The Foundation is providing food boxes to families hard-hit by the lockdown.
Students from all over Nepal were invited to submit art for the first Nepal Art Exhibition. Art brought over to the U.S. is sold, with 100-percent of sales helping the students continue their studies.
Linda Heitz, Kristi Reid, Mary Jo Scheetz and Angie Sodey have donated their time and talent to help get the artwork ready for display.

Owner of Holtkamps Floors, Decor and Furniture, Bobby Holtkamp, said the main thing done was just combining the names of the two businesses, but it helps out in several aspects.
Its been business as usual, Holtkamp said. Weve had no surprises.
Holtkamp said it has been working well for all involved.
It makes it easy for the customer, Holtkamp said. Now, instead of dealing with two entities, they are working with one. We used to have customers who would come in and write a check for Floors Decor when they meant Holtkamp Furniture and visa versa. Its now simpler.
Holtkamp said it has also helped the staff.
We only have one computer system now instead of two, Holtkamp said.
Holtkamp said the merger came about after he took a long look at the companys books.
We were double-dipping in a lot of expenses, Holtkamp said. We paid twice for advertising, insurance, computer software and workmens comp. And when you start to dig into the numbers it became the easy choice to make.
Holtkamp said in many retail stores impulse buying is done quite a bit, and now that the flooring store and the furniture store are well mixed, it has been happening at his location as well.
