Quite a bit of luxury vinyl flooring is sold in this price range, though its not the most popular range.
Average Cost: $1.89-$2.19 per square foot.
Longevity:8-12 years is typical in a residential setting. In a commercial setting, expect 5-7 years for an average. Again, how heavy it gets used and how well it is cared for make the difference.
Selection: Good. Mostly wood looks in basic textures.
Construction: Theres a mix of core types. Some has attached pad.
Warranty: Some has a lifetime residential warranty, but 15-25 years is more common.
Best Use: Homes with light to moderate traffic. Very light commercial use, for those brands with a commercial warranty.
Brands:Armstrong Vivero Good, Mohawk UniClic 3.4mm and 4.4mm and Glue Down 2.5mm all Home Decorators Collection.
Large Plank Vinyl Floors
This is one trend you can expect to see every year in every style for the foreseeable future. Longer, wider planks make your room look larger, more open, and less busy.
Soon, short, thin planks will be seen as outdated. In fact, I would venture to guess that going with smaller planks could significantly reduce your homes resale value. And also, they just wont look as good.
Now, I do think eventually well hit a limit for how large these planks can get. But, I definitely recommend getting on board with the large plank vinyl trend!
Will the wide plank vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?
Manufacturers are only trending towards even wider and longer planks. This trend will soon become a classic staple and will likely last the test of time.
Luxury Vinyl Plank Cons
- You cant grout the tile so if you love the look of grout lines, this may not be for you.
- You need to be careful with the floor cleaners you use no bleach, wax, oil, or abrasive cleansers. Use a gentle cleaner.
- To make it look professional, you need to remove your baseboards and toilet, then install the tile, then replace that stuff . For more tips on DIY bathroom remodeling, check out my post, DIY Bathroom Remodel: Beginners Guide.
- Our tile said not to install cabinets on top of the tile, but we did install our vanity on top of it, so well update this post if that was not a good idea.
- Since it is made using layers of different stuff, we did have a couple of tiles that got a tiny bit of the corner of the top layer ripped off a little bit during install. Im hoping they dont become worse over time.

Cheap Vinyl Plank Flooring Up To $139 Per Square Foot
The cheapest luxury vinyl flooring is often discounted/clearance flooring. There are some bargains, but theres cheap quality too. Find out the length of the warranty and whether it is prorated. Warranties indicate what the manufacturer thinks of the flooring.
Average Cost: $1.19 per square foot
Longevity: 5-10 years. Residential use only. Expect it to look good for up to a decade depending on how much TLC it receives.
Selection: Poor.
Construction: Stone/polymer LVT costs less than wood/polymer flooring, so much of whats available in this range is SPC. If its WPC, it is either clearance or very poor quality.
Warranty: Usually 5, 10 or 15 years for residential use and no warranty for commercial installation.
Best Use: Quick fixes to sell a home or for use in low-traffic areas like a guest bedroom, vacation home and no-shoes areas.
Brands: Among cheap lines are Mohawk 2mm Glue Down, cheap TrafficMaster at Home Depot, cheap Style Selections at Lowes and similar. Most online sellers have random lines in this price range.
Trending Vinyl Flooring Looks

As I mentioned, the coolest thing about this years vinyl flooring trends is the realistic looks manufacturers can accomplish. Once upon a time, realistic wood-look vinyl flooring was unheard of. Now, I bet if I showed you some current options, youd never guess they were vinyl!
Currently, you will find vinyl flooring available in styles that mimic current wood and tile flooring trends, and even a few vinyl-specific trends as well.
The consensus among design experts is that wood-look flooring and wood accents are the new neutral. Wood looks are incredibly trendy and versatile enough to go with tons of styles, from farmhouse to contemporary.
These days, wood-look vinyl is just as realistic as wood-look laminate.
Better technology is constantly being created and used to make vinyl flooring look more like real hardwood. Whatever you see trending in engineered hardwood, whether it is a rustic oil-finished Oak or a more contemporary smooth maple, the vinyl flooring industry will be quick to create a visual that will be nearly impossible to tell apart from the real deal. Carly Notcha,US Floors
With that said, there are quite a few textures and wood-look species you should keep an eye out for this year. In 2022, vinyl manufactures will only be producing even more convincing wood looks mimicking the hottest wood flooring look and texture trends.

- Styles: About 10 .
- Types: Wood only.
- Colors: A few each of light, medium, dark and gray.
- Widths: Most are 6 to 8 planks.
- Edge: Micro-beveled edges give the flooring a contemporary, finished look.
Where to Use NuCore High Gloss Flooring
When you want the flooring to be a prominent part of the design scheme, and you dont mind daily sweeping, consider high gloss NuCore vinyl plank flooring.
The designs fit traditional and contemporary settings very well. Theyre less suited to rustic and very modern homes and buildings.

Preparation For Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
Preparing your home for luxury vinyl plank flooring doesnt require much but as with most things, preparation is key to making your experience to install these floors go as smoothly as possible:
- As with real hardwood, it is recommended to acclimate the boxes of LVP flooring by storing them flat for at least 8 hours or overnight.
- Ensure the surface where the LVP will be installed is completely flat and smooth, whether thats removing tile or filling in cracks or uneven areas.
- Give your floors a good wash before you cover them up! After we had our tile removed, we were left with a dusty surface, yuck. It was nice to walk on clean concrete while installing to avoid the further spread of dust.
- Sentimental tip: Use permanent marker or paint to leave a fun or inspirational message for the next homeowner or generation. Dont forget to date it!
Choose A Cleaning Solution
Several commercial cleaning solutions work well for cleaning LVP and LVT flooring. However, before using a commercial floor cleaner, read the label for product ingredients and whether it is safe for LVP flooring. Products that contain ammonia can damage vinyl surfaces. Mop and shine products can leave a film on the floor that attracts more soil.
If desired, you can easily create a cleaning solution with products you have on hand that will clean LVP flooring without causing non-reversible damage.

High Variation Vinyl Flooring
High color variation vinyl can feature variation between planks, in each plank, or both. This gives you a look with lots of dimension and excitement.
Homeowners love the natural, rustic look that higher color variation vinyl provides. In nature, stone and wood arent so uniform. There are all kinds of inconsistencies.
Now, with modern technology, you can achieve these more random, natural looks with previously only available in specialty wood flooring with vinyl! This makes your floor more of a statement piece and tends to pair best with simple but contemporary decor.
Will the high color variation vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?
The challenge with something bold like high color variation is its a very specific aesthetic. I believe they will likely be trendy for the next decade or so.
Types Of Luxury Vinyl Plank
There are several types of luxury vinyl flooring. There are planks and tiles. The planks are more like a wood look plank, long and skinny. These are great for living areas and kitchens.
The luxury vinyl tiles are either a 12×12 square or a 12×24 rectangle tile, and usually simulate the look of stone or ceramic tile. I love the stone look luxury vinyl tile for bathrooms.
Home Depot has a number of really cute luxury vinyl tile that look like stone, like this MSI White Ocean 12 in. x 24 in. Rigid Core Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring, below. I have a few more of my favorite stone-look luxury vinyl tiles at the end of this post, from both Home Depot and Floor & Decor.

Wear Layer: Thickness And Material
It is important to research the wear layer before buying any LVT/LVP.
The wear layer is the thin, clear layer that covers the design layer of the flooring.
There are two things to know:
- Thickness: The thickness is given in mils. One mil equals .001 inches. Wear layers range from 4 mils to 40 mils. Most cheap flooring has a wear layer of 6-8 mils. Average is 12-20 mils. A few have 30-mil wear layers or thicker.
- Material: Most LVT flooring has a polyurethane wear layer. Nothing is added to the wear layer of entry-level vinyl plank flooring.
Ceramic beads are added to some midgrade and premium luxury vinyl flooring to make the wear layer tougher.
Armstrong has a wear layer called Diamond 10 Technology. It is polyurethane with crushed lab-created diamonds. It seems like that would produce a better wear layer, but this is a newer product, so time will tell.
What Is Lvt & Lvp Flooring

So what is LVT & LVP flooring and what makes it so different?
For a start, this is not vinyl in sheets, LVT flooring refers to luxury vinyl tiles and LVP flooring is luxury vinyl plank flooring.
Secondly, and this is the most important bit, new printing and photographic technologies means that luxury vinyl flooring can be made to authentically mimic both the look and the texture of real wood or stone products .
But best of all, these nearly real luxury vinyl tiles and vinyl planks are often cheaper than the real thing!
It is this combination of price and fantastically improved realism that is proving the defining reason for the rise and rise of LVTs popularity.
As Annette Callari on the World Floor Covering Association website states,
the look and feel of natures best materials at a lower cost are the reality of luxury vinyl tile flooring manufacturing.
LVT is so realistic these days that you can even get specially formulated grout to finish off stone-look tiles for extra realism. And then when you add to that the inherent high performance, durability and easy maintenance of vinyl youre clearly onto a winner.
LVF also offers a lot of flexibility design-wise. Along with wood and stone looks, there are graphic patterns, block colors and unusual textures also available such as mosaic pebbles or indented steel panels see below for our round-up of the biggest LVT design trends.

Worst Quality: Vivero Good
Armstrong Vivero Good Rural Reclaimed
Thats a weird heading, isnt it? The LVP is both worst and good? Yes.
To explain, Armstrong Vivero is made in 3 lines, Good, Better and Best.
So, in short, Vivero Good is the worst Vivero flooring of your three options. To be fair, Im sure we could find worse LVP if we did an exhaustive survey of every brand produced. But of the major brands, this is the cheapest.
It isnt terrible, it just isnt LVP you should expect to hold up very long to heavy traffic, big dogs and rambunctious kids.
Why Armstrong Vivero Good is the Worst LVP
- It has a wear layer just 6 mils thick thats the biggest concern.
- The residential warranty is just 15 years, among the shortest of any vinyl plank flooring brand.
- Cost starts at $1.49 per square foot.
Theres a place for cheap vinyl plank flooring, so we arent disparaging this product. Again, dont expect it to look fantastic past 5-7 years unless it gets very light, no-shoes kind of traffic.
