Subway Tile Isnt The Only Option
It might seem like the only option that feels timeless, but that simply isnât the case! There are tons of other styles and colors that can be used to pull off a timeless look that youâll love for years to come!
Truth be told, I struggled greatly with this while designing my own kitchen! I almost opted for subway tile because I really wanted a timeless look! I absolutely love subway tile, because it truly is timeless, but itâs not the only option for your kitchen!
There are many timeless options for a kitchen backsplash such as hexagon tiles, picket tile, penny tile, and square format tile .
Timeless Backsplash Tip: Opt for a natural stone like marble or slate for a more traditional and timeless look. For example, marble or slate mosaic tile!

Trending Backsplash Tile Layouts And Patterns
If you want a more traditional tile shape like a rectangle or square, you still have the opportunity to get more creative with the tile layout itself.
The herringbone pattern is one of the most popular tile patterns for backsplashes and beyond. Often the herringbone pattern is paired with subway tile, but it also works with large format tile and small mosaic tile, too.
Its simple yet bold, especially if you go for a contrasting grout color.

Bonus Tip: Caring For Your Backsplash
Be sure to ask your tile installer to seal the tile as needed. Some tile will need to be sealed before and after install. Some tile will only need to be sealed after install, and some not at all! I also ask my tile installers to use a grout that is pre-sealed for durability!

Calculate How Much Backsplash You Need
To calculate how much backsplash youâll need, take the length of the area where tile will be placed and multiply it by the height of the area. Complete this calculation for each area of tile. Then add each amount together and multiply by 1.1. This is to allow for a 10% overage in case of broken tile or odd tile cuts.
Make It Unique With Layout & Grout
Choosing the tile is just one step of the process! After youâve selected the tile youâd like to use, youâll need to nail down the layout, grout joint size, and the grout color.
The layout can be completely customized to make your space feel unique! You can add a border of another color or shape, mix and match colors of the same tile, or play with the off-set of the tiles.
One you know the layout, you can select a grout color that reflects your personality. Do you want the grout to blend in? Match the grout to the tile color. If you want a more bold look, you can add a contrasting grout color.
TIP: If you do select a contrasting grout, be sure that it will work with the tile youâve selected.
Once, I tried to use a dark grey grout with a light colored cement tile and the grout bled into the tile and ruined it! Natural stone and cement grout may absorb a dark grout color, so do a little test prior to grouting the entire area.
You can also play with the grout joint size to add an even more unique look to your backsplash. The grout joint size is usually ââ, but can be up to ¼â. Consult with your tile professional about the size your tile requires. If thereâs wiggle room, you can increase or decrease to make your tile feel unique. Personally, I like a very thin grout joint and always ask my tile layer to use the smallest joint possible.

Ways For Installing Subway Tile

Just as you have a multitude of subway tile materials, you also have many different options for installing subway tile.
In this next image, you see an all-over pattern in a Travertine subway tile with a decorative band to break up the installation and tie in the countertop pattern.
Below, you see a glossy ceramic subway tile in a grey-blue color in a horizontal layout where the tiles are offset.
The example at the top of this page demonstrates a soldier-style installation. You’ll see this in a horizontal format as well as a vertical one as you see below.
If it’s a herringbone pattern you prefer, you can do that, too.
Or, perhaps you’d rather a diagonal installation such as what you see below. Notice the horizontal mosaic border and how it adds whimsy to the backsplash design.

As you can see from these examples, the backsplash design possibilities are endless! Just because you’re working with a rectangular subway tile doesn’t mean you are limited to a boring design.

Peel And Stick Tile Backsplash
With peel and stick backsplash tiles, you get the best of both worlds when it comes to ease and quality.
Manufacturers have developed backsplash tiles, made from real stone, that come with a pre-applied adhesive. To install, simply peel off the backing and stick the tile to the wall
This is especially helpful since ceiling-height backsplashes are becoming increasingly popular. If you want to take your tile all the way to the ceiling, you can keep up with the trend with less effort.

It’s Not All Squares And Rectangles
Far from it! In fact, shapes are what make backsplash designs so much fun. Let’s explore a few.
Arabesque Tile
The arabesque shape is all about curves. As you can see in the image above, it looks elegant, whimsical and contrasts well with the angles of the kitchen cabinets.
The product featured below is Traditions Denim, a high gloss satin finish ceramic wall tile.
Fishtail Shapes
Keeping to the shapely tile theme, here’s a shape that looks terrific in a backsplash: the Fishtail which is also known as a fan or tulip shape.
Here, you see it combined with a subway tile installed vertically.
Hexagon Tile Shapes
A classic wall tile shape is the hexagon. You’ll find it in a multitude of scales – from tiny to large, and even tiny hexagons that create a larger hexagon shape.
The shape works beautifully in stone as you see below where we’re experimenting with a Travertine hexagon and 2×2 glass mosaic decorative band to dress up this elegant Cambria countertop.

Or, consider building off of a horizontal theme with this glass subway tile and mixed glass horizontal strips mosaics in the installation below?
Backsplashes allow you to express your inner creativity so you wind up with the space of your dreams. Not only is it functional, but it delights you, too.
Backsplashes & Large Tile Do Belong Together
Traditionally, backsplashes have been the domain of small tile – mosaics, strips, and 6×6 squares as you’ve seen earlier in this article.
What’s new is large tile.
Below you see an installation with a 12×12 glass tile. Although not a true large format, in comparison to small squares and even smaller mosaics, this bold colorful statement is powerful given the tile size.
– Discover kitchen design inspiration
Chances are that you’re familiar with wood plank tile – long, narrow, rectangular tile pieces that look like wood. Did you know that many of those long tile pieces fall under the category of large tile? And, that they look fantastic on walls?
Imagine using those planks on a backsplash.
Here you see a white-washed wood plank with a distressed finish.
Here’s another example with a slightly wider and shorter plank. Notice the variation from tile to tile.
If you like pattern and shade variation, you will love this next installation of wood planks in three contrasting tones.
As tile gets even larger, you’ll see backsplashes done with even fewer tiles, creating a sleek, modern contemporary look.
Regardless of your design style, there’s a tile type that’s perfect for you.
