Does Everyone Have Just One Style
Absolutely not! Just as every person has nuances to their personality, your decorating style will have nuances, too. Your design style will evolve over time based on your life experiences, current design trends, phase of life, etc. So what you might choose today might not be what you would have chosen 10 years ago, or even what youll choose 2 years from now!
You can have multiple styles and they can all work together harmoniously. Now you might think that multiple styles automatically equate to an Eclectic vibe, but thats not necessarily true. For instance, Traditional and Rustic live harmoniously but wouldnt be considered Eclectic.
Southwestern Interior Design Style
Southwestern style home design by online interior designer, Christine M.
The southwestern style as we know it today is not the same as it was when it first became noticeable in the design world. And it will continue evolving as the years pass by. Southwestern interiors gather their inspiration from the soft lines of adobe houses, Spanish textiles, ironwork and nature. Color pallets have various colors found in the American desert. Rust, terracotta, and cactus green, are a few favorites amongst designers. Whereas furniture is more on the heavy side, often adorning thick legs and bulky finishes. Additionally, texture is southwestern interior designs best friend. Leather and suede are the most common upholstery material.

Rule #: Promise To Work Within Your Set Budget
Our last rule is where most DIY designers falter. For some, the high of visualizing their dream home design wears off as soon as the talk of a budget comes up. But working within your budget shouldnt be met with dread and shouldnt stifle your creative potential. Heres how you can stick to your budget without sacrificing your dream home decor:
Reuse items that you already have.
You might already have what you need. Categorize each item you currently own and identify if it still serves its purpose and the style youre going for. Do you have items that have an entirely different aesthetic than youre going for? Organize a garage sale for extra funds or donate them to your nearest charity.
Dive into a garage sale or a secondhand store.
Somebody elses unwanted items could be your treasure. These establishments are a hodgepodge of every single style both old and new and could become an easy distraction. So remember eyes on the prize.
Focus on mixing rather than matching.
Purchasing big-ticket items in one go, like a furniture set, might sound like a way to get everything you need at once. But it could end up draining your budget faster and restrict your ability to truly personalize your space. To design like an actual pro, dont be afraid to mix and match your elements especially your furniture. Keep one focal point and add in complementing accessories.

Contemporary Home Decor Style
Contemporary design style is often confused with modern design style usually references to modern are in fact contemporary design.
Contemporary design is current design which includes open spaces, plenty of light, straight lines, plenty of glass, settel and wood and in some cases unusual layouts.
Elements of contemporary design:
- Very light or very dark wood tones, and
- Lighting design used as an artistic statement.
Contemporary designers create designs that are more fluid, in the sense that they are according to the current, trending styles however, they dont resort to a particular style or design. These designers also have a great sense of whats currently in style so their designs are constantly evolving and carry a very modern touch to them.
In todays time, contemporary interior designs include unadorned spaces that appear to be super clean and classic, along with furniture that is exposed from its legs to create more space. As stylish and modern contemporary designs may be, they are yet super elegant with intricate details kept to a minimum.

Its Unlikely You Have Just One Style
For a long time, I also had difficulty when it came to categorizing my style. In the end, I just invented my own. The thing is, I dont actually believe that most people fit into one neat little category in any part of life, and interior decorating style is no exception. At this point, I wouldnt box myself into something like Farmhouse without leaving the door open to other styles. My decor has always been a blend, and its likely yours is, too!
Thats why if you end up taking the quiz attached to this post, youll find my six design archetypes to be a little looser than the classic style definitions. Theres some overlap, and some things will fit, while others wont. My advice is to take what applies to you, what you like, and leave the rest. Its just my interpretation and mostly for fun.
All in all, this post is meant to serve as a guideline to you as you begin to find your decorating style. As always, my main advice will be to fill your home with what you love, whats meaningful, and what makes you happy.

See if those colors form a palette that works well together. Notice youre only picking out pastels? Maybe you trend Coastal or Boho. Bold rich hues? You might be Hollywood Glam or Traditional. Neutral or monochromatic tones? Scandi, Modern, and Minimalist could be right up your alley.
