Home Decor Idea #1: Get Rid Of Something Super Old Or Ugly
If a dated light fixture or piece of furniture constantly makes you groan, get rid of it. The project doesnt have to break the budget: Drab wall colors can easily be painted, and outdated knobs and hardware can be inexpensively replaced. Even dated kitchen cabinets can be painted white and instantly brought out of the 80s.
Let The Sun Shine In Your Kitchen
“When it comes to heavy, outdated drapes, a naked bank of windows is better than an ugly one,” says Lynne. Ideally, window dressings should be functional and elegant: Think sheers paired with full-length panels.
If your room gets a lot of sun, opt for light colors that won’t fade. The most recommended lightweight fabrics for panels are cotton, linen, and silk blends because they tend to hang well.
Smart Home Decor Updates
- Soft lighting
Soft lighting is perfect for getting rid of the harsh shadows that harsh overhead lights can sometimes cause, which is why its become such a trend in recent years. If youre worried that the light will be too dim, then consider adding some pendant-style lamps to create separate areas of brightness around the room instead of having one significant source of light illuminating everything at once.
- Adding extra layers
Adding another layer to your decoration scheme doesnt always mean picking up something new either! Simply painting existing pieces with dark or bright accent colors can do the trick, especially for bookcases, coffee tables, and fans. Changing up how you display your current pieces is a great way to add another layer without buying anything new.
- A monochromatic scheme
You dont need to go all out when it comes to color in your home decor, especially when using dark shades. Instead, stick with one color and let it be the backdrop for everything else you have. Try using different textures to make the monochromatic color dull. If youre worried that itll be hard to mix and match, then try introducing a few different hues of the same color for some extra flair.

Hang At Least One Mirror In Every Room
“Mirrors can make a space feel brighter because they bounce the light around the room,” says Breining. But placing one in the wrong spot can be almost as bad as not having one at all.
Put mirrors on walls perpendicular to windows, not directly across from them. Hanging a mirror directly opposite a window can actually bounce the light right back out the window.

Swap Out Light Fixtures
If your house has outdated light fixtures that don’t fit your new aesthetic, consider swapping them out. Depending on the mood you want to create in each room, lighting should either serve as a focal point or as an accent to the existing space.
Like with art, it’s important to consider the size and positioning of light fixtures when redesigning your home. A 4-foot chandelier, for example, will probably look better in a large foyer than over your dining room table. You can also add dimmers to contribute to the overall mood and balance out natural light.
Although you can swap out light fixtures on your own, lamps can offer a simpler solution. “Go big or go home,” says Peters. “Giant lamps can change a room. Plus, the soft light they radiate adds a warm glow to the space and makes any room look lovely and cozy.”
Lighting should either serve as a focal point or as an accent to the existing space.
Invest In One Furniture Focal Point
For those who want to add an entirely new focal point to their home, but cant afford completely redecorate, try investing in one piece of furniture you really love. This could be a , a maximalist armchair or even the kitchen table of your dreams. You can then spruce up the rest of your home with smaller, more affordable pieces.

Home Decor Idea #1: Dont Match Finishes Perfectly Coordinate Them

Certain stains and finishes play well with others , but the vast majority do not. If youre looking to match your floor to your cabinets, or your faucets to your doorknobs, go for an exact match, or make a real contrast aim for at least three shades darker or lighter. An almost-match has the tendency to look cheap.

Chris Bradley for M. Lavender Interiors
Before grabbing your wallet, you’ll want to consider how your ideal furniture pieces will function in a space. “Gather images of the pieces you intend to use and make a small ‘room board,'” Lester suggests. “See how all of the pieces interact with each other and play off of one another before you get them home.” You may find yourself catching key mistakesfar before they’re too late to fix, fortunately. “Oftentimes, this is when we see that we have pulled too many items with the same leg style or that a rug pattern may be competing with a drapery fabric,” Lester explains. “Its a great way to make simple changes and swaps and fine-tune the look before you place the final order!”

Given that furniture can be quite pricey, you may wish to spread out your purchases over time. If you’re not sure what to buy first, think bigliterally. “Start with the larger pieces to ground the room, like the sofa or the area rug, and build from there,” Arditi says.
Arditi offers another key piece of advice, for buying sofas: “Always invest in the best sofa you can afford at the time,” she comments. “We spend so much time in our living rooms and most of that time is spent on the sofamake sure it is the most comfortable and the best one you can get. You won’t regret it.”

Home Decor Idea #4: Create A Gallery Wall
A well-composed gallery wall will exude elegance, thoughtfulness and will stand out to visitors, says interior designer Jillian ONeill. A gallery wall can pack a big punch and highlight the effort you put into your décor, but they can look like a mish-mosh if they arent designed well. To create a cohesive look with minimal effort, choose frames that work together like these. Picking two or three colors like black and gold or silver and white will help the display look coordinated, even if the pictures inside dont match as much, says ONeill.

Don’t Start In The Furniture Store
Many have heard the advice to avoid grocery shopping when youre hungry, because it leads to poor choices. The same holds true for furniture stores dont go shopping in a panic, just because you have an empty home. Yes, you need a sofa. But if you pick the pink-striped sectional just because you like it in the store, without taking measurements or thinking about the rest of the room, youre stuck with it. The rest of the room will have to be built around that sofa, and if its too large for the space it will look forever awkward.
Start in the room youre looking to furnish, armed with a measuring tape and a notepad.

Did the pillow from the living room go with the pillow from the chair in your guest room? Did the pillow from that chair in the hallway want to be friends with the pillow from the dining room chair?

2. Texture: a little texture to mix it up
3. Solids: a solid gives the eye a place to rest
4. Statement: A bold pillow that creates a conversation.
