Where To Buy A Gas Fireplace Insert

A gas fireplace insert is a great choice when retrofitting an existing fireplace or creating a custom gas fireplace feature these inserts offer a variety of installation and fuel options. If it serves your needs, matches your look, and fits your space, then an insert is a perfect way to go.

Are Ventless Gas Fireplaces Your Best Option

Gas fireplaces with no vents passing to the exterior are becoming more popular for remodeling work and new construction homes. Ventless fireplaces are easier to install than vented wood or gas fireplaces and warm rooms nicely. Because there is no airflow to the outdoors, they do not create the negative pressure problems that can occur with a vented fireplace. They do not emit as much exhaust as wood-burning fireplaces and might even be safer than vented gas fireplaces. But, if you have a respiratory illness or a very tight budget, electric fireplaces will remain your safest and most affordable bet.

Large Magnetic Fireplace Vent Cover, Set of 2

Hi Beverly & Gil, Rick & I redid our family room 19+yrs ago with a very affordable zero clearance fire place. Needless to say the doors & flu never where the best at keeping the wind out. We would have to leave the flu open when we went to bed just to be safe & would wake up to a very cold family room . Last year it was so cold we actually duct taped a garbage bag over the glass doors & did not use the fire place all winter. You saved the day and the fuel consumption. Last night we had a fire. Even though the fire was out Rick as always left the flu open and the doors closed then added the Fireplace Fashion cover over the doors. The wind last night was awful & cold, but when I came down this AM the outside temperature was < 30 but the room was nice and toasty. Thank you for your excellent product. With much appreciation, Rick & Lucy Goodchild

How Much Does It Cost To Run A Direct Vent Fireplace

Typically, fireplaces are measured in terms of BTU per hour. Natural gas users are typically billed in therms, which are equal to 100,000 BTU. Knowing this, many direct-vent fireplaces are rated for between 20,000 and 30,000 BTU/hour, which would equate to about 1/5 to 1/3 of a therm for natural gas or gallon of propane.

As of November 2019, data collected from the U.S. government estimates the average cost per therm of natural gas is about $1.06. This puts the cost of using natural gas around 20 to 35 cents per hour. For propane users, propane is typically measured by the gallon, which is about 91,000 BTU total. Again, using data provided by the U.S. government, bulk LP costs about $2.00-$2.50 per gallon measured for 2019. That puts the cost of the fireplace units at 40 to 83 cents per hour.

Gas Fireplace Exterior Vent

My gas fireplace has a direct vent on the wall outside of my living room. We have just turned that outside area into a patio and suddenly the aluminium protective cage that surrounds my fireplace vent is an eyesore. I thought if I painted the cage to match the wall colour, it would be less annoying but I don’t want to do anything unsafe.

I can’t find my installation manual and the fireplace store that installed it says to check that manual. They also said to call my local gas inspector but I am sure that will be an ordeal getting through to anyone and having someone actually make a decision could take forever.

Does anyone know if I can use high heat paint on the aluminium cage safely?

Direct-vent fireplace installations should be done by a trained professional to ensure safe operation. Always check appliance manufacturer information for direct vent configurations. It is important to note every fireplace will have designated venting systems that must be used in order to ensure proper installation. Again, a certified installer will simplify this process, but each fireplace’s manual will have specifications and charts covering venting options. While direct-vent systems are simple and straightforward, we know that every installation can have its own variables which can create unique challenges during installation all the more reason to consult both us and a certified installer.

All Three Of Our Products Can Help Stop Drafts From Entering Through Your Direct Vent Fireplace

The flue that lets outside air into the firebox and lets the exhaust gas out is always open. When you don’t have a fire the cold outside air is coming into the firebox and you have radiant cold! If you are not using your fireplace or don’t use it often you may want to use our Flue-zee Flue Cover inside the firebox. You need to open the glass front and place the cover over the flue opening. Typically, our 8″ Flue-zee works here. See position of #1 on diagram – flue openings inside the in firebox.

The Convective Heat vent that you see circulates warm air when you have a fire. When you have no fire the cold air in this vent begins to circulate in the opposite direction and throws cold air out of the bottom of the vent. Blocking this cold air at the bottom vent and the top vent with our Magnetic Fireplace Vent Covers will stop this cold air. Our cover will slide up under a small upper awning if you choose to cover the top vent. Stopping this cold convection will give you a lot of relief. You must remove the covers when you have a fire to get warm air circulating. If your vents protrude and are not flat to hold the magnets flat around the edge, or if you have a screen over them, our magnetic covers will not work. See position #2 in diagram of vent openings to Convection Air Intake/Convection Heat.

How Does A Direct Vent Fireplace Work

How to Light a Gas Fireplace

Direct-vent fireplaces are fully contained fireplace units designed to draw in fresh air and expel combustion byproducts outside the structure. There are two main types of direct vent fireplace: coaxial and colinear. The first type, coaxial, consists of a pipe within a pipe, where the outer portion serves as an intake and exhaust exits through the inner tube. The second type of direct vent fireplace, colinear, consists of two pipes in line with one serving as a dedicated intake pipe and the other serving as a dedicated exhaust pipe.

Both primary styles of direct venting provide several benefits. Each avoids issues such as oxygen starvation and poor draft. Additionally, these fireplaces perform well under strict energy efficiency requirements.

Are Direct Vent Fireplaces Energy Efficient

Direct-vent fireplaces are energy efficient for several reasons, namely they are self-sufficient heating appliances, not drawing air and heat from the room.. For this reason, some of these units operate with up to 70 percent efficiency. These fireplaces are also much more efficient than traditional or decorative vented gas logs, which lose the majority of their heat through the chimney.

    Ventless Gas Fireplace Insert

A ventless gas fireplace insert is an enclosed box that fits inside of your fireplace. It helps trap heat and contains the flame. Like built-ins, the fireplace box reduces air leaks, is smokeless, and lowers energy bills by keeping heat inside instead of venting it out. This option is a good bet if you want to repurpose your existing fireplace but don’t want smoke in the house or your flue isn’t operational.

How To Pick Out A Ventless Gas Fireplace

    The Spruce / Ana Cadena

Even though few homes today rely on fireplaces as their primary heating source, many homeowners still enjoy the ambiance of a warm fireplace. Ventless gas fireplaces are popular because they’re clean and easy to use. They are designed to burn gas more efficiently than vented versions, resulting in far fewer fumes and no need to install a flue. However, reviews are mixed about their safety.

Read on to see if ventless gas fireplaces are suitable for yousome states have regulations banning their use, and others have certain restrictions. This comprehensive guide will help you make the best decision regarding using ventless gas fireplaces in your home.

Before Buying A New Ventless Gas Fireplace

Copper Wind Defender Side Wall Vent

Although they have safeguards built into new ventless gas fireplaces, their safety is debated. A patchwork of regulations across the United States controls the legality of ventless fireplaces. Roughly a third of states allow these units with no restrictions. California and Massachusetts have banned all ventless fireplaces indoors.

In the remaining states, regulations vary based on the city’s population, altitude, and surrounding geography. And many states have restrictions on where in the home you can install a ventless fireplacefor example, they may not be allowed in sleeping areas.

Ventless fireplaces are engineered to minimize exhaust fumes. A special regulator creates a fine mixture of gas and air that burns cleanly, and the units are carefully tested in approved laboratories before they can be sold. Although fumes are significantly reduced, ventless fireplaces still release small amounts into the home, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide exposure. Also, non-vented burning of natural gas or propane produces water vapor as a byproduct, increasing humidity levels and the risk of mold.

    Natural Vent Gas Fireplaces

Natural-vent gas fireplaces, a.k.a. B-vent fireplaces, draw air from inside the home to feed the flames, then vent combustion gases up through a chimney. In this way, they function like a traditional wood-burning fireplace. This makes them a good choice for converting existing wood-burning fireplaces, and for wood-stove-style standalones that use a metal chimney to maintain a rustic aesthetic.

Natural-vent fireplaces can also pull off classical elegance, such as this Keystone Deluxe model from Empire, or a more modern look, like the customizable B46 Ascent model from Napoleon.

    Reasons To Choose Gas

Wood-burning fireplaces provide great ambiance, but they can’t beat the easy, no-fuss efficiency of gas.

  • You don’t have to split, stack, season, or haul logs.
  • There are no ashes to bag, no smoky smells, no chimney to clean.
  • You can start, adjust, and snuff out fires with the touch of a remote control.
  • The fire needs no tending and won’t die out from neglect.
  • A wall thermostat can control the flame sizeand therefore heat outputto maintain a specific temperature setting in the room.
  • The fixed glass panels covering direct-vent fireboxes ensure that the furnace- or boiler-heated air in the rest of the house doesn’t escape up the flue, as it does with a wood fire.
  • You can get as much as 75 to 99 percent of a fuel’s energy back as heat, instead of the 10 to 30 percent for wood fires.
  • Gas fireplaces can go almost anywherein an upstairs bathroom, in a basement, or outdoorswithout needing a chimney.
