Small Space Decorating Ideas: A Dreamy Swedish Apartment In Stockholm

Small One Bedroom Apartment Decorating! Grandma Chic!

We have been living in our tiny home for over 10 years, therefore we know a thing or two about how to decorate a small apartment!

Its so easy to clutter your space with unnecessary items, but when you have only 40 square meters like in this flat in Stockholm to live in, you really need to be careful about what you buy.

But what if I told you it was possible to live in a wonderful small space without compromising on life quality?

This dreamy Swedish apartment has the perfect balance between design and functionality.

And in this post, I will show you exactly what tricks they have used to do just that.

Opt For The Unexpected

When shopping for furniture, it’s easy to overlook pieces that don’t seem to have a purpose. In a small space though, those items can suddenly become useful. A decorative pedestal, for example, adds a bit of flair to your decor and provides an extra seat when necessary without taking up a lot of space. It’s also easy to move around the room.

Clear Separation Between Public And Private Spaces

One of the biggest concerns that family members of residents have when they decide to put their loved ones in an assisted living facility? The dignity and privacy that the people they care about the most will receive.

Of course, seniors too care deeply about their privacy and want to be able to maintain as much of their independence as is safely possible. If they feel like your facility doesn’t have a private space for them to receive assistance with personal tasks, ask sensitive questions about their health, and even go for routine check-ups, they may put off getting the care that they need.

In the past, well-meaning but ultimately problematic design regulations meant that many seniors ended up receiving care in full view of other residents. This is now unacceptable, and may even lead to complaints and lawsuits against your facility.

Instead, opt for a design that separates care facilities from living spaces completely. If possible, have separate buildings for nursing rooms and apartments, or ensure that the two are reasonably far apart from each other. You should also increase the size of your care rooms, and even consider adding a waiting room for those who have standard appointments with on-staff nurses and doctors.

Finally, instruct nurses to give patients medications and basic care/assistance in the privacy of the resident’s private room or apartment whenever possible.

Other Assisted Living Decorating Tips To Consider

Other decorating tips and tricks that can prove helpful in decorating your assisted living apartment include:

  • Hang large paintings or signs on the walls
  • Place mirrors around so they reflect natural light
  • Place tables in corners or near furniture. Avoid placing tables in the middle of the room as this could be a safety hazard.
  • Be mindful of cords or rugs which can also be a hazard.
  • Use scented room fresheners or infusers to enhance the mood and feel of your space.
  • Lavender scents have a relaxing and calming effect, while citrus scents naturally energize a room.
  • Add battery-operated candles to give a cozy, homey feel to the apartment

Think About Lighting A Small Apartment Living Room

decorating an assisted living apartment

You always want a small space to be well lit but you never want it to come from just one source. Layered lighting is key to create ambiance, so make sure you have a couple lights going on in our space. As well as an overhead light, add some wall sconces and a floor lamp too for soft but more focused lighting.

Go Vertical With Storage

In planning the best way to make use of a space, its critical to think vertically as well as horizontally. Tall, narrow storage systems are your best bet when trying to get the most storage out of the least amount of space.

Place two identical bookshelves on either side of a doorway for a built-in shelving look. Or, a large entertainment center that reaches from floor to ceiling serves as a great room divider between your sleeping and living areas.

If you really want to take storage to the next level, consider using your available wall space as a hiding place for fold-away furniture. Murphy beds get a bad rap, but this transformable technology has come a long way from the cheap motels of the past. The LGM Tavolo by Clei features a queen-size wall bed, 35 linear feet of shelving, and a 5 foot fold-down workspace table. Since each feature folds independently, it truly lets you dictate how youd like to use your space.

Fight Caregiver Fatigue With Improved Staff

Senior living architects are also increasingly focused on how the facility’s design can improve life for its staff in addition to its residents.

Caregiver burnout is especially common in senior facilities, which means a decreased quality of care, higher staff turnover, and in extreme cases, even an increased likelihood of elder abuse.

To combat this issue, the design of staff-only lounges, kitchens, and even areas where staff can nap when on breaks has become the standard in contemporary assisted living facilities design. These spaces should be large, have plenty of natural lighting, and allow for equipment and medication storage options as well.

Many facilities also include classroom space for staff in their design plans, as it allows for continuing education courses to be taught on-site, and gives interns and current nursing students a place to hone their skills away from the eyes and ears of patients.

Remember Scale And Size

If youre moving from a traditional family home, you should think about size and scale. Large furniture pieces may no longer be the right scale for an apartment. Also, you may not have as many rooms or storage. As you pack, its the perfect time to declutter and think about what you truly want to keep.

If youre struggling with sorting through your items, ask for help. You may even consider hiring a professional to help organize and declutter. By getting others involved, it will make the task of sorting through years of items less overwhelming.

Design With Safety In Mind

Senior living communities are designed with senior safety in mind. This is vital because in addition to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, interior design can affect the health and well-being of seniors. For example, a senior living space should avoid slippery flooring, utilize outdoor spaces to encourage healthy sun exposure and offer firm, upright seating thats easy to get up from.

Of course, that safety shouldnt stop when a resident is back in their room. When decorating, try to avoid loose rugs that might cause a senior to trip or fall. Make sure theres a lot of lighting, with bedside lamps that are easy to reach. Use furniture with drawers that have large, easy-to-grab doorknobs.

Cozy And Inviting With A Corner Couch

Do you love to lounge? Consider a corner couch. Instead of multiple chairs and tables, one corner couch defines the area while maximizing seating space. The throw pillows, rug, and simple golden bamboo-trimmed coffee table add texture. And dont overlook those gauzy floor-to-ceiling drapes! Its a tried and true strategy to create light and space in your room.

If your compact living room comes complete with a compact fireplace then you should take full advantage! Lay out a nice rug and plant a comfy chair next to the fireplace. You can use the mantel as a bookshelf or to display art. Dont want to build a fire? Try arranging several pillar candles in the firebox instead.

Turn your TV wall into a focal point in your apartment living room. Hang a gallery wall of artwork around the TV to frame it, and surround the display with furniture. This TV could have been placed on the console table beneath it, but taking it to the wall creates a surface that can be used for serving when entertaining. Plus, having a piece of furniture beneath a wall-mount TV grounds it and prevents it from seeming as if there’s a random object floating on the wall.

Choose Your Palette Wisely

You can do a bold color in a small space, but a predominantly neutral palette generally makes the flow feel less choppy. Light shades open things up. When choosing your palette, focus on using three colors: Choose two light, bright shades to decorate the majority of the space, then add in one darker accent color to ensure things stay visually interesting.

Calm, even-toned rooms fool the eye into thinking theyre more spacious than they are. Add subtle patterns and textures to keep the space from falling flat.

Start with the one color you know you want to use in the room. Then use this handy color scheme tool from Sessions College to play around with the schemes to find your other color. Remember to throw in a multi-colored painting, rug or textile that will pull your color scheme together.

Cute Small Apartment Living Room Ideas

Embracing your apartments diminutive size can help disguise just how small it is, making its limited space feel like a feature rather than a flaw. While theres certainly more than one way to accomplish this, opting for a cute aesthetic is probably the easiest.

Artwork of some type should be the focal point of your cute living room design. Pieces can range from botanical illustrations to retro pop art. If you have a favorite comic book or pop movie poster, now is the perfect chance to frame and display it.

If your lease allows, consider hiring an artistic friend to create a vibrant mural. On the other hand, peel-and-stick wall decals are a temporary option that wont eat into your security deposit when it comes time to move.

Incorporate patterns into your living room decor in the form of blankets, throw pillows, or an area rug. Faux fur will make the space feel warm and cozy. Chunky knit blankets or poufs are another excellent way to add texture and whimsy.

Even if you choose to embrace your small living room, its still important to save space where you can. A chaise sofa placed in the corner of your room will maximize seating.

Create An Awesome Lighting Plan

As seniors age, their vision and hearing can deteriorate. Therefore, it is essential to make sure they have a good lighting plan to make tasks easier for them and feel more secure.

Keep lights on a dimmer when possible, and turn off overhead lighting in favor of lamps or wall sconces where appropriate.

If it is possible to tie lighting into a motion sensor, you will not have to get up to turn the lights on and off when moving around in the dark. This works exceptionally well if multiple rooms share an entry area. You can quickly move from one room to another without having to flip a light switch continually.

Use lamps and small sconces to create an intimate setting. A table lamp is lovely for bedside tables look for lamps that can turn on and off by touch. Dont forget nightlights for bathrooms and hallways.

Personality The Easy Way

If shopping for new items isn’t in the budget, don’t worry. You most likely have almost all you need at home to create your own decorations. Start with your own mementos. Pictures, postcards or dated art calendars can all transform into art pieces for your walls.

Getting a few favorite photos up on the wall is one of the quickest and easiest ways to make a new place feel like home,” says Forbes contributing writer, Laura Gaskill.

You can even transform a series of pictures into a collage for a unique, framed print. If you have a little money in the budget for decor, pick out some stencils, paint and a small canvas or two and create your own art.

Repurposing items can also provide unexpected decor pieces. Put a fresh coat of paint on a drab piece of furniture to make it like new. Get creative with things like empty metal tea tins, coffee tins or even food cans. Once cleaned out, they make great planters or cute storage for smaller items.

You don’t always have to buy new to find quality, decorative pieces that align with your design style. Check out your favorite stores, discount shops and outlets, but also make time to go a little off the beaten path.

Visit consignment shops, garage and estate sales and flea markets. Art fairs and craft fairs are yet another place to find unique pieces. They may be a little less affordable, but it can be part of your budget to splurge on one or two items.

Tips For Turning Your Apartment Into A Home You Love

Downsizing to a smaller living space can be unsettling, but it can also be liberating. Youre leaving behind the burden of home maintenance and repairs, and opening the door to a life full of freedom and choice starting with how to decorate your new living space. To help make your new senior apartment as comfortable and beautiful as you imagine, weve provided the following 10 small-space decorating tips to turn your apartment into a home you love.

1. Rightsize your furniture.

The biggest mistake people make when downsizing their living space is taking their furniture with them. Furniture manufacturers have embraced the demand for Boomers rightsizing to senior apartment homes and have scaled down their collections to fit smaller living spaces. When shopping for new furnishings, pay attention to scale and size. Everything looks smaller in a big furniture store. Know your measurements. And make sure the furniture you buy will fit into your elevator and through your new doorway. Find more downsizing tips here.

2. Define separate areas.

Make a small space seem larger by giving each room a distinct, unique décor scheme. Opt for light colors, such as beige and eggshell, in the living room with dim lighting for a relaxed feel, while going bold and bright in the bathroom to liven up the space. Dividers, area rugs and wall curtains are great ways to create the image of separate spaces if a wall isnt present.

3. Use a rug to create cohesion.

5. Consider a round table.
