How to Decorate Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

Building a kitchen backsplash out into the room may be of more value to your kitchen than the space it initially takes up. Here in the kitchen of Roddy Murray, founder of interior design practice RJ Murray Design , is a marble kitchen backsplash providing clever cubby-style kitchen storage within, as well as creating a shelf above to display the couples favorite pieces of crockery and kitchenware.

Choose Your Paint And Application Tools

Youve gone Pinterest happy on dream kitchen colors and youve maxxed out your phone storage space with apps to help you find the perfect paint shade. But youve now come to your moment of reckoning. While we cant tell you what color to choose , a word on paint type might help with the decision process.

Whether you choose latex or oil-based paint, know that both provide a great finish. As latex paint has improved over the years, many pros have entirely given up on oil-based paints. We used oil the first two years we were in business and quickly nixxed it because the latex products they have these days are heads above what they used to be, Brabham says. Latex paints dry faster, are easier to clean up , and are more forgiving than oil-based paints in terms of paint application. However, they can be more susceptible to stains and do take up to three weeks to fully cure .

Oil-based paint, which is typically more expensive and less user-friendly, goes on smoother than water-based paint and tends to better hide the cabinets imperfections. It also shrinks less as it dries, which means that what it looks like wet is how it will look dry. I prefer an oil-based paint for cabinetry that will be getting a lot of use, as it tends to hold up better over time, Berk says.

Second Set Of Cabinets In A Different Finish

Here is a unique take on a second set of cabinets a totally different finish! It creates a really cool contrast but still has a uniform look.

The best way to accomplish this without it looking clunky or clashing is to install cabinets without trim and to skip hardware. The kitchen in this picture totally nailed the look.

Things To Keep In Mind

As I shared above there is an almost 2-foot gap between the tops of the cabinet molding and our 9-foot ceilings, which gave me plenty of room to display things I love.

A note of caution though, if youre thinking about decorating the tops of your kitchen cabinets too, anything less than 18 inches of display space might make your room feel a bit squatty.

Also, choosing a tone-on-tone color scheme, pieces that complement your existing decor or enhance the feeling youre trying to achieve will also help keep things from looking cluttered.

When in doubt, edit!

Its not always easy, especially if you love collections . Its a good thing to let your special pieces have some room to breathe though.

Apply Primer And Paint

Armed with the right tools, youre ready to put paint to the surface. Prepare the sprayer or paint bucket, and begin with your first layer of primer. Start with the backs of each door, lining them up on the two-by-fours. Let those dry, then flip them over and spray the other side. This is the part of the process where everybody gets scared, as that first layer of primer is going to look like something a six-year-old went to town on, Brabham says. Dont panic. Youre just giving your cabinet a good base, and each layer gets progressively better.

Once the primer has dried , repeat this process with the paint. The best way to build up the surface is with multiple layers of thin paint rather than one thick layer that can more easily chip off, Brabham says.

If youre using a brush and roller, dip the brush in the paint and apply it to the surface. Work your way from the inside edges of the face frames to the outer cabinet sides and fronts . You will then go in with a flock foam mini roller and smooth it out. Be careful not to make too many brush strokes, which will create air bubbles that will dry into bumps. This is the same process you will apply to the cabinet base in the kitchen, as you cant spray that.

The space above your cabinets can be built up to serve a specific purpose, like providing extra storage. Cleverly use the area above your cabinets to hold baskets, making for additional storage space in your kitchen. The baskets can keep small items and extra kitchen supplies out of sight while adding a decorative touch to the room. Using a set of matching baskets creates a uniform look, and adding vertical dividers will give the space an even more organized and clean appearance.

Take Paneling To The Ceiling

Add interest to the space above a kitchen cabinet with wall panels. In period properties, wall paneling ideas that match or complement the original style and architecture of the property are a wonderful way of marrying old with new. Alternatively, in a plain kitchen that is lacking decorative details or any original architecture of its own, adding a paneled area is a clever way of bringing character to a featureless space.

Here, tongue-and-groove paneling, linen curtains and wall-hung storage all contribute to a French country kitchen feel in this space designed by Charlotte Crosland . Keeping your batterie de cuisine in view and close to hand via magnetic knife blocks, utensil racks and pot stands adds to the laid-back, unfitted ambience. Decorate with typical brocante finds like chic vintage china, enamelware and artwork inspired by country pursuits.

There Are Times When Decorating Above The Cabinets Can Work

Items that are simple in style and shape are best up high.

I am such a fan of kitchen cabinets to the ceiling and overscaled, tall cabinets that fit the height of these new homes with higher ceilings.

It’s as if the builders didnt get the memo that if youre going to raise the ceiling, the cabinets and other elements need to go too!

Seriously though . . . While Im not in love with the stuff that people arrange way up high just to fill a small void, and I do think people overload those areas where its not necessary, there are certain situations and certain times when some decorating actually does need to be done above a cabinet.

For example: If your cabinet is fairly short — let’s say about 5 or 6 high and it looks way shorter than the ceiling. If it sort of cries out for something to be put above it — that’s okay, you can decorate it -)

Really, there are a few approaches you can take when decorating above a cabinet.

So, to make sure one of them really works for you, you first have to determine if you have the right space for what you want to put up there and if you have the right accessories to do the job.

If you do, you can then begin to address your cabinet decorating as follows.

Displaying Collections Above Cabinets

Do you have something special you want to display or show off?

When you have a really amazing collection of something, and you really, really, really want people to see it, displaying what you have above the cabinetry can be appropriate.

Remember: Quantity is your friend in this situation. You’re creating a visual horizontal band or border, kind of like a cornice or architectural frieze of some kind, which can only be accomplished with lots of repetition of shape and value.

For example: I wouldnt put a collection of vases in a line, up high, if they were all of different color and value , because it would create a spotty type of visual effect and ruin the purpose.

White Backsplash Tiles And Light Gray Kitchen Cabinets

If your cabinets are a light gray color, it may seem nearly hard to find a backsplash that matches them. For example, you might be excited to mix your light gray cabinets with an attractive white and transparent backsplash, but youre concerned that it would appear uninteresting. A white tile backsplash with an eye-catching and unique design is the easiest approach to avoid this difficulty. Because varied shades of gray cabinetry can be difficult to locate, a neutral-colored backsplash is an innovative approach to displaying your sleek gray cabinets without drawing attention to other design aspects.

Remove The Doors And Hardware

Yes, its a major time suck. And yes, you will be tempted to go rogue and skip this step. But removing the cabinet doors gives you access to all surfaces of the cabinet. So unless you are going for a bolder free-form flair, dont cut this corner and do remove that door. Starting at one end of the kitchen use a drill or manual screwdriver to remove the cabinet hinges, doors, drawers, and hardware. If youre painting only the door fronts, you do not need to remove the sides.

Number the doors as you take them off, Brabham advises. Otherwise, it will be a mess because not all doors are created equal. She suggests writing the number in the hole where the hardware was, and covering it up with a piece of tape to avoid painting over it. To avoid losing the hardware for each door, Brabham puts it on the shelf each door came on or placing each in a small bag that is labeled with the corresponding cabinet number.

Put It All Back Together

Now you are ready to return everything to its proper place for the final reveal. Using the same drill or screwdriver, reattach the drawer fronts and doors to the hinges and hardware. Slide the drawers back in place.

Consider zhuzhing the newly painted cabinets with some stylish hardware. Contrast is key when it comes to hardware, says Berk. For lighter cabinets, l like to go with darker hardware in black or bronze, and for darker tones I often opt for brass or nickel. Add the bling and voilà: kitchen à la mode.

Here is the completed space! Compared to the look above, you can see that I removed one of the baskets because they were a bit squished. I also swapped my maidenhair fern for this artificial zebrina with a more subtle tone. Finally, I added some dried florals for a little more texture. I am so happy with the final look!

Side note: I just ordered these plum fake cimicifuga ramosa leaves that often sell out. They are a popular choice for fall, but I am enjoying them for summer too.

Tips For Decorating Above Kitchen Cabinets

Loving my kitchen now that the cabinets are decorated on top!

Consider these kitchen cabinet ideas to help elevate your kitchen design.

  • 1.Choose a decor theme. Think of ways to complement the existing style of your kitchen. For example, old-school milk crates add extra storage and a touch of nostalgia to a retro kitchen. Rustic signs and vintage metal accents will accent the farmhouse kitchen look.
  • 2.Create contrast. When picking out your kitchen decor, aim to include pieces that will stand out against your wall color. A white kitchen provides a blank slate for colorful decor to shine, while dark kitchen walls provide a perfect backdrop for bright, white ceramic pieces and artwork in white frames.
  • 3.Install open shelving. If your kitchen doesn’t have upper cabinets, or if you’re looking to get rid of them, install open shelving instead. Kitchen shelves are perfect for displaying plates, glassware, and food canisters.
  • 4.Reduce clutter. Too much going on on the walls and above the cabinets can make a small kitchen feel even smaller. Go for minimalist decor or cohesive storage solutions if you’re working with a small space.
