Cookie Decorating With Kids

Last week, I visited my daughters school and led afun food class. Well, I went back with some cookies and icing in hand for a cookie decorating session with her class, twenty-plus four and five-year olds. There was no avoiding the sweets part with this one, no matter how healthy I tried to get with the recipes, but we all just accepted this exception. I also had to hobble around on crutches given I sprained my ankle the night before, so that was a bit of a spectacle.
How did I sprain my ankle you ask? I didnt trip on a sidewalk.. No. I fought a motley crew of bandits. Yeah. Bandits.
Since I first published this post, Ive shared more on how to decorate cookies with kids. Check out these posts, too.
While at the store, I also volunteered with The Childrens Inn at the National Institutes of Health, a residence for very sick children receiving treatment and their families. Id bring all the cookie decorating supplies one day in Spring so the children could decorate and photograph cookies for fundraising Christmas cards. This was a much different experience than a street festival. There, the kids were not rushed along to make way for more kids. There, I hung out with the kids. We chatted about why they were at the Inn. I worked with each child to guide them in cookie decorating so they could create their masterpieces. And masterpieces they were. I was pretty humbled by the cookie talent year after year.

What To Bring To A Kids Cookie Decorating Event
cookies of course, and some decorated samples
Lots of cookies. I cut out four shapes for each child, and there are 21 kids in the class. Thats 84 cookies, plus some extra. Choose simple shapes, circle, star, hearts I included butterflies because they studied butterflies and elephants because they are The Pre-K Elephants. Find the cookie recipe HERE.
icing in bags
Prepare and color the icing ahead of time. Because these are younger children, I skipped the black and red, the worst stain offenders. I chose pink, orange, yellow, lime green, blue, purple and white. I made three of each, for 21 bags, so each child could have a bag at the same time. Ideally, Id have had even more bags to avoid fighting over colors, but Im only one person and it takes forever to make all those icing bags. Dont mess with the tips and couplers since youll be tossing these at the end. Put a scoop of icing, not too full for little hands, in a disposable decorating bag, close tightly with a rubber band, and right before decorating, snip 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the end. Find the royal icing recipe HERE. For all my bags I needed almost two batches. I used Americolor Soft Gel Pastes to color the icing. Find the bags in the craft store.

In the beginning, Arty McGoo was the title of Elizabeth Adams’s art blog, which she began in 2010 to chronicle her myriad creative projects. When cookies became Adams’ preferred medium of artistic expression, the blog struck its niche, and Arty became the moniker of Adams’s cookie alter ego. Her hand-painting skills, in particular, proved so impressive that cookiers around the world began to ask Adams to share her knowledge. In 2013, McGoo U was born.
McGoo U earns the best overall title for the depth, breadth, and regularity of its high-quality cookie content. You will encounter all the primary decorating techniques, including airbrushing, hand-painting, piping, stenciling, stamping, wet-on-wet decoration, dimensional flood, and much more.
Adams produces about six videos per month on McGoo U: a cookie class, two guest segments featuring a prominent artist, a segment on the business of baking, a time-lapse of Adams improvising a design, and a fun, goofy segment called “after school” composed of sketches on subjects like cookie poetry and cookie ASMR.
McGoo U has two tiers of membership: monthly and annually. A monthly membership costs about $10 per month and gets you access to the current month’s content. The annual membership costs roughly $105 per year and includes access to ALL McGoo U content, plus occasional giveaways and bonus videos. Both membership tiers include access to the McGoo U social network and private Facebook group.

A Class Specifically For Younger Cake Decorators Making Colourful Toppers And Piping Buttercream
This class is a simplified version of our popular ‘Cupcake Decorating’ class, and is ideal for children aged between 5 and 10 to come to with an adult, or for children aged 10-16 to come to alone or with a friend. You would learn to colour fondant icing, and cut out decorations to go on top of cupcakes. You will then be shown how to make them look even more fun with colourful pearls and sprinkles.
After the decorations have been made, you will be able to choose a colour for your buttercream and learn how to pipe a swirl onto your cupcakes. The session lasts an hour and a half and everyone will take home a box of 4 cupcakes with colourful buttercream swirls and bright fun toppers. Tea and coffee is provided for adults and soft drinks for children.
Dates for this class are only listed during daytimes in school holidays – the next dates for this will be in the Easter holidays. We list class dates around 2 months in advance of when they will be held.
This class can be run as a private session for children’s birthdays at a cost of £25 per child to include soft drinks and snacks throughout the session, with an extra half an hour at the end for singing ‘Happy Birthday’, enjoying a cupcake and drink with some music. We can host groups of up to 12, and party bags can be added on for £5 per person. Get in touch if you would like more details. Dates can book up quite far in advance so booking well in advance is advised – call or email us to find out availability or make a booking.

Temecula Cookie Decorating Class
- This is what you can expect when you sign up for one of the cookie decorating classes they are holding right here in Southern California.
This was a Valentines Day themed cookie decorating class put on by Sweet Missys and SweetArt Cookie Co.
They are conducting them year round for adults and kids. They make it very easy to follow along, give you step by step instructions, and even give you a tutorial on how to make the perfect royal icing at home.
My kids found it easy to follow along with using practice sheets. That way you could get a hang of writing with frosting.
Then on to the cookies. They shared how to outline, flood them, and making all the little details you see on the cookies.
It all kinda made sense after we did it. Of course theirs are much prettier. But it was really fun to do it together and learn a bit about cookie decorating.
This class was held in Temecula at Paint & Sip. There were many sets of friends and coworkers who came together and had a great time, you can
They are also offering classes in Orange County and San Diego, look out for future classes on Facebook!
