No More Farmhouse Style For Joanna Gaines

MAGNOLIA FARMHOUSE DECOR HUGE HAUL | CHIP and JOANNA | HGTV FIXER UPPER | WACO TEXAS

As part of the first shows offered by Magnolia Network , Chip and Joanna will star in Fixer Upper: Welcome Home. In one of the show clips, Joanna does a home tour of her recently renovated farmhouse. She showed her green kitchen cabinets, going against the previous year’s trend of neutral colors . Indeed, deep green is one of the trending colors of 2021 for kitchen cabinets, alongside blue, pink blush and black .

The new version of Fixer Upper comes with new design choices that deviate from the original style that made the couple famous. The most shocking one: leaving behind the modern farmhouse style. Wooden floors, neutral paint, and farmhouse-inspired accessories were a staple in all the Fixer Upper episodes, but eventually the public grew tired of this vibe because it was everywhere. However, in the first episode of Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, Joanna seems more open to industrial-looking elements and materials, which give a more modern look that aligns better with current design trends .

When Decorating Open Shelving Think Diagonal

“When I’m doing open shelving, a trick that I like to use is using a grid that goes in a diagonal form,” says Gaines. So, if you have a green jar on the upper righthand side of your top shelf, put an item in a similar hue diagonally below it to create a cohesive design. “It’s a simple trick that I use on all built-ins it’s a way to balance things out.”

Backsplash With Something Other Than Tile

A post shared by Fig St. Design on Jan 22, 2020 at 9:11am PST

For her La Pequeña Colina kitchen renovation, Gaines chose a polished white macaubus quartzite over tile for the backsplash.

I love that it adds texture without competing with the rest of the design details in the space, she wrote in Homebody.

Most people use tile for a backsplash because its functional and can look amazing. But it can get repetitive, says Arbor Living interior designer Jemma Lane.

An alternative that I quite like is the use of a large stone slab, which brings intense character to a space with minimal effort, Lane tells The Delite. It also adds brilliant depth and imperfections to a kitchen cooking is an art form that will sometimes go wrong and that is often what is instilled into a lovely stone backsplash.

This Instagram post by the Santa Cruz, California-based Fig St. Design shows how effective a stone backsplash can be in a kitchen.

Always Try To Evolve With The Times

Its always astonishing to walk into someones house that they clearly put a lot of work and money into 30 years ago And yet they never touched it since. Remember that trends come and go. The great thing about Joanna Gaines is that she really evolved over time. In the first few seasons of Fixer Upper, youll notice that everything she did was rustic country farmhouse. Because of her, the style became incredibly trendy, and it was copied by retailers over and over again from 2015 to 2020. Clearly, she realized that her style had become trendy, and pushed herself to grow.

Now, when you see Joannas style on her new Magnolia Network, you can see that she is growing and moving on. The interior of her kitchen in Magnolia Table looks like it belongs in a French country cottage or chateau. And a lot of her home designs are more in the vein of Japandi or Modern Industrial. Clearly, she is evolving with the times, and trying to make a home design fit in with whats popular right now, instead of clinging on to the past.

Its Ok To Use Dark Paint In A Small Room

10 Ways

This barn comes with two small rooms, so Chip and Joanna decide to turn one into a bedroom for Alex and the other into an office, perfect for study sessions.

At first, Joanna wants to paint these rooms bright whitebut she changes her mind at the last second.

The two bedrooms are small, and they felt a little boring, so we are adding a really rich color to the wall, Joanna says.

She chooses an army green for the office and charcoal for the bedroom, and then adds more character by adding white oak paneling to the ceiling.

While some might think its a mistake to use dark paint colors, making these small rooms seem even smaller, these colors end up being a great choice. The green and charcoal give these spaces a cozy, comfortable vibethe perfect ambiance for studying or sleeping in this gorgeous converted barn.

A Small Fireplace Still Makes A Statement

This living room needs a centerpiece, so Joanna installs a wood-burning fireplace with firewood storage. The fireplace gives the room a cozy cottage feel while the black finish plays into that modern industrial theme.

However, Chip says this fireplace wasnt what he was expecting.

When I saw it, I thought it was maybe a little bit too small, he says.

Still, Joanna points out that, with the wood storage beside it and the flue going up to the ceiling, it still feels grand.

When the space is finished, its clear that the black color complements the beams, while the wood storage warms up the space. Its a great feature and proof that a home doesnt need a large, traditional brick or stone fireplace to feel homey.

Listen To What The Client Wants

Unfortunately, there are a lot of design shows out there where the designer doesnt seem to actually listen to what the clients want in their home. Many designers are a one-trick pony, and all they know how to do is the same style over, and over again. In fact, there are even some lawsuits going on over disaster TV home makeovers that you didnt see behind the scenes. The great thing about Joanna Gaines is that she actually listens to what the client wants. Even if a certain design style is out of her comfort zone, she will do her best to learn something new, and make it work.

If youre an interior designer, its important to listen to your client. And if youre not, youre probably not the only person involved in the design process. Most likely, you have a partner, children, or family members living in the home with you. Even if youre the one financially backing the project and doing all of the design work, dont forget to keep everyone else in mind. At the end of the day, you want everyone to be happy living there, no just you.

Incorporate Antiques Into Your Kids’ Rooms

Who says that antiques and kids are a recipe for disaster? A few sturdy older pieces can make a playroom a significantly more elegant space in no time.

“One of the things I really love to incorporate into kids’ spaces are funkier pieces,” says Gaines, who repurposed an old toolbox as crayon storage for a client. “It’s a really cute piece that has a story, but now you’re just giving it a new purpose.” And for more ideas on how to declutter that play space, start with these 15 Genius Design Tricks for Hiding Children’s Toys.

You Get To Keep The Giant Poster Of Your Old House

In every episode of “Fixer Upper,” Chip and Joanna place a massive poster of their clients’ old home in front of their property. Then, on the last day of filming, the Gaineses wheel the poster away to reveal what their clients’ renovated home looks like.

Speaking to Glamour in 2015, Chip said this idea came to them last-minute while filming the show’s pilot. “We were sitting there trying to figure out how to get the client to their space without revealing the house itself,” he said. Luckily, “at the 11th hour,” two of Chip’s friends built the poster that “Fixer Upper” fans know and love today.

Even better, clients get to keep the huge poster. “We fold that thing up and we give it to the family,” Chip told Glamour. “We try to make an event of the canvas itself.”

You Won’t Find A Grand Foyer In Chip And Joanna Gaines’ Farmhouse

With five children, you could assume Chip and Joanna Gaines have a giant foyer filled to the brim with kids’ coats and backpacks, but that’s not the case. Upon entering the family’s home for a segment on Today, Henna Bush Hager remarked that the foyer isn’t “a huge space.” But that’s no problem for JoJo. In fact, she thinks families could easily make do without one.

“Some people don’t have, like, this carved-out entry space,” she told Today, “and so, even if that means a table, it doesn’t have to be this grand foyer. It’s just the idea that ‘Hey, I can set my keys down.’ It’s just like that nice, warm welcome.” The Gaines’ entryway may be small but it packs a big punch. It also includes pieces that are both aesthetic and functional: a small chair, an armoire, a narrow table, a simple mirror, a bench, and a wall rack. Not bad for a small space, right?

Embrace The Farmhouse Look

Gaines lovingly refers to her own home as the farm and even has a menagerie of animals for authenticity. You certainly dont need to go out and buy livestock, but you can incorporate elements of farmhouse living no matter how urban your dwelling is. Wood crates, vintage or vintage-inspired decorative signs, mason jars, and wire baskets are all simple ways you can mimic the farmhouse aesthetic in your space.

“If there’s a room in your house that you dread going intowhether it be a pantry, your office, or even your laundry roomhave fun with it and make it more of a creative space so that you actually enjoy going in there,” Gaines says in the same video.

She suggests adding subway tile to the walls, and then filling the space with glass jars, handmade signs, storage baskets, and some antique-inspired lights.

Upcycle Instead Of Buying New

Most episodes include at least one trip to an antique store because Gaines is a big fan of bringing new life to an old find. Whether you scour yard sales in search of the perfect buffet to refinish or you simply repaint and repurpose a piece you already own, upcycling furniture and accessories is a great way to save money and add character to your project. Its also less wasteful and helps to keep old furniture from getting tossed in the trash.

Choose Clean Lines Over Fussy Furniture

While Gaines decorating style skews farmhouse, the furniture she chooses often has classic features and modern styling. Look for simple, sleek pieces that can fit into a variety of spaces. Your furniture should fade into the space, not stand out. Classic leather couches are a good bet here. Theyre easy to keep clean and will last for years.

Incorporate Industrial Pieces Into The Design

One of the styles that Joanna Gaines made popular on Fixer Upper is combining industrial pieces with traditional home decor. For example, she uses a lot of those huge industrial lights in kitchens, but combines it with the soft neutrals in the actual furniture and home decor. Joanna did this because she was in the habit of buying secondhand items from antique stores. This started a huge trend, and a lot of stores began selling brand new industrial-inspired pieces.

Sometimes, you can save money by buying used industrial pieces to use in your own house. For example, I needed a large desk, because I work at home and have a lot of different equipment that I use for various projects. So I found a table with metal legs that was once used in a store that went out of business. I was able to cover the top with a faux concrete vinyl sticker, and it looks very cool. Unfortunately, with the economy being as it is, there are still a lot of stores shutting down. This could be an opportunity for you to spend between $20 and $50 for pieces that normally cost hundreds of dollars.

Create Distinct Areas In An Open Space

Love the sight lines of your open floor plan, but feel less enthused about having your ground floor function as a single room? Transform the space by delineating separate areas with distinct design elements. “The easiest way to do that is with light fixtures and area rugs,” says Gaines. In doing so, “When you walk into space, you have two defined areas.”

Chip And Joanna Gaines Turned Their Once

Joanna Gaines 47 Home Decor Solutions For Your New Fixer Upper House

Back in 2018, Chip Gaines teased wife Joanna about the messy attic in their home. For a while, the attic was used as a storage space, filled with the usual holiday decorations, odds and ends, and some materials for future decorating projects. “I don’t even know who she is,” Chip joked on Fixer Upper , explaining that while most of the house was organized, the attic definitely was not.

The once-cluttered space has since been converted into a gorgeous craft room, as Joanna revealed in a post over at Magnolia.com. This not only added to the home’s livable square footage, but also gave the attic a purpose and the family “a hideaway from the rest of the house” where everyone can work on projects and create things. Joanna Gaines made sure to add in lots of “storage space in the form of closed cabinetry and functional wall decor” to prevent the space from getting so disorganized again.

Can You Hire Chip And Joanna Gaines To Do Your House

The devastating news that Chip and Joanna Gaines were stepping away from their HGTV mega-hit reality show, Fixer Upper, was salved when it was announced they’d be launching their own TV network. Set to launch in 2020, the network will feature a host of original content from the couple as well as re-runs of the show that made them famous, as explained by USA Today. In the meantime, if you were hoping the Gaineses could lend their expertise to your own house, there’s still hope…kind of.

In a 2018 update on their official Magnolia website, Chip and Joanna Gaines explained they are only looking at new houses and “Are not renovating/remodeling any fixer uppers.” The Fixer Upper couple encouraged anybody near their home in Waco, Texas to get in touch if they’re interested in purchasing one of Chip and Joanna’s new builds, or if they’re looking for help buying their very own fixer upper property.

As a result, the couple will only work within a 30-mile radius of Waco. However, they’re grateful for any and all interest, noting how “blown away” they are by the support from fans nationwide. But for the foreseeable future, Waco is their home base. So unless you’re planning to relocate to deep in the heart of Texas, you’re on your own.

Some Touching Scenes Never Make It Onto The Show

According to Teodoro, Lindy and Chris Ermoian were surprised that certain scenes were edited out of their episode. For example, in one “tender” scene they filmed, Chris played an original song for his wife that was later made into an art piece for the couple’s music room. The scene itself, however, never aired.

Transform Old Areas Into Functional Spaces

Joanna Gaines Just Coined a New Design TermâAnd We Are ...

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines on Jan 11, 2016 at 7:03pm PST

A lack of open space isnt an insurmountable problem, Gaines wrote in Homebody. She looks for closets that arent needed or spots under stairs that can be transformed into useful spaces.

This is especially useful in rooms which are small with relatively large closets, interior designer Beverly Solomon tells The Delite. For instance, you could open it up and create a desk area without making the room feel too cramped. And with proper planning, you can keep some storage space above the desk.

In a 2016 episode of Fixer Upper, Gaines showed how opening up the area under stairs can create a functional office space. She loved the results so much, she shared them on Instagram:
