Floor & Decor Ceo: Learn From Experience
Taylor grew up in Florida in a “middle-class family.” His parents wanted him to attend college . But Home Depot and its co-founder Bernie Marcus changed his path.
“I started in the sixth Home Depot store in 1983,” said Taylor. “Bernie was very influential in my career. I was the youngest store manager and the third store I ran was in Deerfield Beach, Fla., near Bernie’s winter home.” Taylor’s mentor knew on-the-job training was valuable. “Bernie said I would learn more at Home Depot than at college,” Taylor said.
It was easy to see Taylor quickly coming into his own as a leader, Labanowitz said. He saw it firsthand when applying for a job at Home Depot. He’d just finished a role in the military. But when he brought in his application, an employee “just threw it into a big bin with a big pile of other applications,” he said.
Labanowitz then asked to talk to a department manager. Taylor, the store manager, arrived and spoke with him. He offered Labanowitz a job on the spot. “He’s very relatable and people like to work for someone like him,” said Labanowitz. “He inspires.”

“That’s up from 29 at the beginning of 2012 ,” said Jonathan Matuszewski, an analyst with Jefferies. “They’re growing 20% every year, and they have a path to 400 stores.” At the end of 2020, Floor & Decor had 8,790 employees.
Investors benefit from Taylor’s leadership, too. Floor & Decor went public on April 27, 2017, closing that day at $32.05 a share. Now it’s trading at roughly $110 per share. That’s a 252% gain, while the S& P 500 is up just 73% in that time.
“Tom’s a natural born leader, and he’s extremely relatable,” said Stan Labanowitz, a Floor & Decor divisional vice president, who’s known Taylor for 30 years. “People will come up and talk to Tom about almost anything.”
Taylor’s experience helps the company compete with big home improvement retailers Home Depot, Lowe’s and Lumber Liquidators on price. But it’s also nimble and consumer-centric enough to take on “13,000 independent mom-and-pop flooring stores” across the U.S., Matuszewski said.
