The Baking & Pastry Program at The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, is focused on helping you grow as both an artist and a technician. Working in professional kitchens, you’ll explore theory and practice through courses that take you from the fundamentals to the world cuisines that are emerging in popularity. Through applied coursework and hands-on experiences you will have the opportunity to build the necessary skills and abilities to confidently meet the challenges of the baking, pastry and food service industry.
While you’ll focus on the pastry arts, you’ll get a well-rounded educationfrom plating a dessert to preparing confections to managing a commercial kitchen. Gingerbread Showdown: Virginia Beach Baker Competes On Food Network Competition For $10k Prize
Cashe Clark liked cooking with her grandmother as a child but she wasnt the most coordinated helper. When her grandmother, Joyce Lane, asked her to bring her eggs in the kitchen or grocery store Clark would often trip and send the eggs tumbling to the ground.
Still, Clark learned how to make brownies, yellow cake with chocolate icing, and other treats including bread pudding her grandmothers favorite. Clark, now 23, has tweaked the recipe and includes buttery brioche bread and cinnamon bread.
The Virginia Beach baker has become such a standout that she has earned a spot on Food Networks new series, Holiday Baking Championship: Gingerbread Showdown. The episode airs at 9 p.m. Nov. 22.
Clark is paired with South Carolina gingerbread artist and expert Teena Ham to compete against two other teams. The bakers will be judged by chocolatier Nacho Aguirre, cook Kardea Brown and lifestyle blogger Breegan Jane the team with the best gingerbread and caramel dessert wins $10,000.
Each episode will have different themes and participants. The Nov. 22 episode is Gingerbread Showdown: Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas.
Clarks interest in culinary arts deepened so much by the time she was in middle school that her mother went to Dream Cake bakery in Virginia Beach and asked if her daughter could shadow its employees for a career class. Then-owner Bobbi Burch said she could only give her a few hours a week.
They filmed in Knoxville, Tennessee, in June.

Other Things You Should Know
- The class limit is 15 people.
- We will provide aprons and towels but bring comfy shoes because you will be standing while baking/decorating.
- Please do not wear open toed shoes or anything that is not non-slip as you will be working in a real bakery kitchen and safety is first!
- Mask wearing is not required as we will be eating and drinking but please do not attend the class if you have recently come in contact with someone with COVID 19 or are feeling ill in any way. You will be sharing a table with others.
- Cancellations with a full refund are allowed up to 48 hours in advance. Unfortunately due to a small class amount we can not refund cancellations with less than 48 hours.
