Living Room Window Treatments
Windows may be integral to the room, but the window treatments make them part of the design. Window treatments give the space form and function. Curtains, blinds, and shades block the sun from entering while providing privacy at night. Screens keep insects out when the windows are open. Most window treatments have decorative elements and colors to coordinate with the room. Installing the following window treatments can dramatically improve a windows appearance and function.

Where Should You Invest Your Money

Before considering how to invest your money, you should take some time to think about the room itself.
How big is the room? Will you need a sofa or a sectional? Who uses it and what’s it used for?
How you choose to spend your money will differ depending on how much use the room will get.You should also consider what you already have that you want to keep or use as a starting point for your design. You may not need to fill in every piece in the room.
Depending on your budget and personal needs, you’re going to invest in certain pieces and save on others. In our opinion, the best pieces to invest in are the ones you want to have in your house the longest. Betsy Johnson, our store manager in Acton, recommends “Good upholstery and a quality, durable, and cleanable rug.”
She describes, “When you invest in a good sofa, it could be in your home for a decade or two if you take care of it. If you buy a cheaper sofa you’ll end up paying more because you’ll have to replace it sooner. Investing in quality furniture pays off in the long run.”
Purchasing a high-quality rug that will last through wear and tear is especially important if your living room will get a lot of use. A well-constructed solid wood coffee table is also a great investment. Betsy explains, “Solid wood can be sanded down and refinished after years of wear. Veneer, on the other hand, cannot be refinished.”

The Real Cost To Decorate And Furnish Your Home
A few weeks ago on Instagram, I went on a bit of a rant. Well, maybe rant is a strong word, but I did talk about something that does tend to annoy me every now and again and thats the unrealistic view some people have about how much it costs to decorate and furnish their home.
Ill often hear from people who want to makeover an entire room for pennies like, buying five pieces of furniture, a rug, accessories, and decor for $200. Thrifting and DIYing can help tremendously to save on costs, but at the end of the day, if you want to create a home with quality pieces that will last a long time, you need to invest a bit of money here and there.
Its All About Priorities
For me, my home is my priority. Not only is it my business, but I work from home and spend the majority of my time here with my family. I want to invest in this place where I spend so many hours, therefore Im okay with spending money on quality pieces that will make me love my home even more.
Its disheartening when I hear from someone who balks at the idea of spending $150 on a rug for their living room but instead can easily go to Target and buy random crap they probably dont need for that same price in one afternoon. It all comes down to priorities.

More Painting For Less Expense
In general, if youre hiring a painter and decorator, its better to employ them for one large job instead of several small, one-off projects.
For example, having two rooms painted at the same time should work out a lot cheaper than simply adding the costs for a single room together. Decorators are good at multitasking, so while one room is drying, they can be getting started on the next.
This is great to keep in mind if you have a large house that you want completely redecorated. Dont be put off by the enormity of the space and book multiple contractors for multiple jobs speak to them upfront and gather quotes for the entire space, and then compare those fees to figure out whats best for your budget and your timeline.

If you have custom pieces, custom drapery, large rooms, or a more maximalist design style, there can definitely be additional expenses we didnt cover in this cost guide. Cost To Decorate A High End Living Room
Not including construction costs, your higher end furnishings are going to cost you $30,000- $50,000. This amount figures in a custom sofa and chairs, custom drapery/curtains, a nice chandelier and exclusive to the trade tables.
Youll also need to account for original sourced artwork. A large rug will ground the room. And like Ive mentioned before, youll want at least 4 sources of lighting.
You can expect that accessories account for around 10% of the total cost of the room.
Start with a custom sofa and rug and work in the other functional pieces, some high and some low cost until you have fully sourced the furniture and accessories for the living room.

Average Cost To Paint A Living Room If You Hire A Professional Painter
Now let’s move on to price estimates for hiring a professional painter to paint your living room.
While painting prices will vary depending on who you hire and the job at hand, most painting companies will offer you an estimate based on square footage because it makes it easier to estimate their labor costs for the painting project.
So for the sake of this article, I’m going to price this out based on the national average cost per square foot, and I’m going to base the total on the national average size of a bedroom.
Keep in mind, if you’re hiring someone to paint a significantly larger living room, and it requires a lot of patching or other prep work, it’s going to drive the price up.
And, if you’re looking to hire professional painters to do your entire house, they might price that out differently since it’s a larger job.
The national average cost for painting per square foot ranges from $1-$3.
This might change, however, if you have a bunch of detailing you want them to do such as crown molding details or other interior design related add-ons.
It’s also important to note that most painters charge less for interior work because interior painting costs are usually much lower than exterior house painting.
A: Create A List Of What You Need To Buy/replace In The Living Room And Rank It
Prioritising items for your decoration project will help you understand what is a must, what is a nice to have, whats worth investing in now, and what can wait until later.
So grab a pen and paper and list everything you think you need to buy and replace in your living room to achieve the results youre working towards. Then rank each one in order of priority. Think about what you need on a practical level as well as aesthetically. Then work your way through the list gradually over time. Save up and spend on items you truly love, dont buy something youre not happy with and regret it – or have to replace it – later.
Your list might look like, getting a new sofa , getting a new TV unit , getting a new coffee table , getting a new rug , getting a new lamp . The low priority items arent going to make or break your design, and are easily added to the scheme over time.
Habitats lighting range is one to look at for lighting ideas that can be retrofitted to living rooms in later phases. If youve plastered already or you arent planning any electrical updates, bring in ambience and detail by adding table lamps, floor lamps or plug-in-design wall lights. Ive chosen the Hadley Brushed Brass and Matt Black floor lamp for this look as its slim and easy to tuck behind a sofa or sit neatly near an armchair. It doesnt take up a huge amount of space and brings in a simple finishing touch.

Interior Decorating Cost Per Room
Interior designers charge between $1,000 and $7,750 per room on average, which includes design work and furnishings. It’s common to see a living room at a flat fee of $2,500 to $5,000, and each bedroom at $1,000 to $2,000. For design work only, costs range from $449 to $1,499 per room.
The cost to design each room, project managing contractors, and buy the furnishings to fill it depends on the size of the room, the use of the room, complexity from a design perspective, and the quality of the furnishings.

Sales And Dented Cans
Another way you could try to save money on paint is by waiting for your local hardware store to run a sale. Even if they knock off a few dollars on a can of paint, this can save you a bunch of money if you know you have a bunch of square footage to cover.
You can also see if they have any dented or otherwise blemished cans that they could sell to you for less.
Most people don’t want to buy dented cans but the paint inside is the same stuff, and if you can get it for a bit cheaper that’s more money left over for you!

Room Makeover: How To Budget For An Interior Decorator
Who said that only celebrities can hire an interior decorator? A room makeover is something anyone can benefit from. If you’ve ever considered hiring an interior decorator, you’re probably wondering whether it can fit within your budget. Maybe you’re skeptical about working with a designer, because you’ve watched Million Dollar Decorator one too many times. But it doesn’t have to be high drama, high cost and trade only furnishings. For many decorators, shopping from catalogs and home retail stores is not considered an impossible design challenge, but rather a normal occurrence. Working with a decorator is a great way to get a finished look to your home, once and for all. You can opt for a decorator to do it all, or have your designer work help you in smaller ways. I’ve detailed out the different ways you can work with a designer no matter what your budget.
So how does pricing work? An interior decorator will either charge a flat fee or an hourly rate for your project. On average a decorator will charge about $100-$200 per hour, with higher end decorators charging $200-$300 per hour. Luxe decorators can charge upwards $500 per hour. Negotiate those details upfront before you make a hiring decision, and ask for an estimate of the number of hours your project will take. Make sure to ask your decorator if they will charge a commission on items you purchase through them.
Let’s consider a simple but complete room makeover. Where does the time go?
